Canada played better than it has in recent years against the USports teams. They played a full 4 on 4 overtime and a shootout after regulation. Holloway scored from Thomas in the overtime. Foote scored on the first shot in the shootout but Byfield, Cozens, Lavoie, and Newhook all missed while USports scored twice. Things might be a bit more clear after seeing how Hunter used the players in this game, but we've seen some very surprising decisions most years so who knows.

Team was really playing together far better towards the end of the game, too. Pretty good signs, all told, I’d say.

This team looks very strong, not sure what you are talking about. The only weakness is the goaltending they are very strong on D and forward.

I just don't really see it. It's a team that could be good. Any Team Canada at this tournament is a contender for Gold in any given year. I just think there are a lot of wildcards and "up in the air" elements to this team. It doesn't have the sort of 19 year old anchors a lot of the best team Canada's have had. It's probably going to be a young team, and some of the most key players are going to be very young. That can easily go either way.

Special teams are important but I dont think focusing on having 8 solid PKers makes a lot of sense. I would focus on having 2 solid PK units and then have a few guys that you know can fill in if one of them takes a penalty or gets hurt. Alot of these guys are good enough to fill in that you dont need to worry about taking more than a couple clear PKers.

I don't think you necessarily need to focus on having that many. But i think 6 is a good "hard minimum" of guys who can not just kill some penalties if they have to...but actually be used to it, and excel in it.

Like i said, the PP is pretty much a given for almost anybody you'd take to a tournament like this. Guys who are comfortable and more than competent PKers is the less common feature for top end players like this. And often along with that, you get guys who are going to be better suited to "lower minute" roles down the lineup, where they're not just getting tons of pure cherry offensive minutes. ie. Somebody has to play "4th line" minutes on a team like this. Best off picking players who have skillsets and attributes that will let them be effective there, playing less like a quarter of the minutes they're used to with their club teams.

Yep. Best Team Canadas always had guys who could grind out those tough minutes and provide energy. Tucker, Tootoo, Ott, ect. If we can find a group of guys to form a line like that, we're in good shape.

They are actually bringing elite talent and skill with a competent coaching staff. Glad they arent bringing a bunch of average 19 year olds.

Mostly small speedy players.
All the same.
Hunters and HC are really screwing it up.

Did Jones do alright in net? I want to believe that it's a good sign that him and Rodrigue were the ones put in net on the other side from Canada

This is where Tim Hunter failed miserably last year...he was using Lafreniere on the 4th line wasting his talents. He had to be a top 6 guy or not even make the team last year....This is where I think Dale will succeed, he will pick the players best suited for where he wants to play them in the lineup he wont just pick the best players.

I like the idea of a Foudy/Dellandrea/Krebs 4th line - They will know there role and play it well.

Perfetti - Will swap with Mercer for shifts and be on PP on the wall

Smith/JBD
McIsaac/Bahl
Byram/Schneider
DiLiberatore ( would love to see Drysdale here but he will get his chance to shine soon enough)

Lafreniere is the only guy on that first line with no history of playing center

I see people are saying Rodrigue didn't look good, so basically he looked like every time I have watched him in nets previously, which was bad.

But of course he will be on the team because he is supposed to be on the team. Silliness.

Yeah, Jones, Hofer, and Daws are all much more dynamic. Bring them all and run with the hot hand.

To get into the spirit, I just watched highlights from Canada’s run last year. Jeez, we actually had a good team. Our bad luck in the QF against Finland was outrageous.

The team was certainly talented enough to win, but the coach was an idiot and that is a big obstacle. The 2013, 2016, and 2019 teams all stand out as having terrible coaching. While the ending of the elimination game was bad luck, Finland did outplay Canada overall in that game.

I have not seen a single game where Rodrigue looked good, boggles my mind that he is seen as a lock as one of our keepers. I'm with you, whoever plays the best should get the call but you know HC, they will go with pedigree and manufactured hype rep.

I think and I hope with both Mark and Dale there they will do things there way.....They will ultimately make the final decisions as they see in their eyes. I do not see HC swaying them one way or another or else they would not be Managing and Coaching this team.

I like your optimism, I don't share it, but I like it.
