Starting to wonder if we’ll be getting any NHL help this year. Arizona has not traditionally been an organization that has loaned players to the WJC (they even kept Christian Fischer when he was in the AHL), and Dach/Dobson have looked good with limited ice time.

It seems to be a strange year where the NHL players are all sitting games out or at least playing very limited minutes. I wouldn't be surprised to get none or to get several.

I think Byfield could fit nicely on the 4th line and if his play demands more ice-time he can be moved up. With his size and how good he plays along the boards, he could play center with 2 big wingers like Foote and Noel. The tournament is on big ice but I still like the looks of Byfield on this team.

Also, is nobody concerned about the youth of this team? From the names I keep seeing, we'll have about 4-5 19 year olds most of them playing down in the line-up.

The 19 year old forwards really aren't a great group for Canada this year Veleno and maybe Lavoie are the only conventional skilled top 6 forwards on other team Canada's. Guys like Noel, Foudy etc. Are usually more conventional bottom sixers I feel like.
I hope Byfield is given an opportunity to go to camp. He was good in the super series but with Hockey Canada's prejudice against 17 year I'm not sure he was good enough.
We almost should bring Perfetti just for shootouts. Seems like we always lose them now and he appears have a knack for them.

Merkley scares me as anything more than a 7th Dman. I feel like he'd shine against someone like Latvia and then get put in against the States and go -4.
I think Declan Chisholm helped his cause with his game yesterday. He looked solid, but this is going to be a damn good defense that will be tough to make

I see Byram and Bernard-Docker as virtual locks on defence along with Smith and potentially McIsaac if he is back up to speed in time (not looking likely at this point). I also think Harley has an inside track for a spot. If Dobson gets loaned, that leaves a group of the following fighting for the remaining few spots:

Bahl Drysdale
Merkley Addison
Woo Barron
Schneider Tychonick
Diliberatore Chisholm

I don't feel very positive about this years team, the available talent seems pretty ho hum to me.

But surely it can't be worse then last years right?

Alex Newhook starting to heat up at BC. I would call him very probable at this point. Lafreniere a lock from the Q. I think Lavoie will make the team even though I'm not crazy about his game. Poulin should have a good shot to make it. I would call Jakob Pelletier a darkhorse to make the team. would fit in well up or down the lineup. Don't think anyone else makes the cut from the Q.

I also love drysdale's game and think he deserves to be there assuming no Dobson/McIsaac/etc. Good enough to play a regular shift. Glad to see some mock lineups with him in it.

I also can't see Merkley making the team based on history and my viewings of him. Has his defensive commitment improved at all?

I like the look of the team overall right now, especially because I am confident in the coach. Canada has had some good rosters that were sunk by coaching this decade.

Regarding Merkley, I can't see him as a justifiable selection for the team. He is very good with the puck on his stick, and that's certainly an asset. He is defensively suspect however and hot headed. If Canada was lacking mobility on the back end then he might be a risk worth taking, but there are alternatives who can do basically the same thing in transition and don't bring the same risks. Since he is now on London I do expect that he will at least be at the selection camp.

Yep. It's not the same situation as the regular season where you can just call up a replacement. If someone goes down due to injury/suspension, our 7th guy will have to be able to play a regular shift. It's pretty obvious Merkley is far too much of a problem in his own end to take that risk. We already are likely to have one defensive liability in Harley; there is no benefit in adding a second one with massive attitude issues. After watching Bouchard play like complete garbage last year, I'd much prefer not even risking Harley. There are far too many options who can be trusted defensively to justify bringing a guy who can't be trusted defensively.

Obviously I'm an Avs fan so I might be wrong and bias but should Bo Byram make the team ?

Do you thing Newhook as a shot ?

I think Byram will make this team come Christmas time but I'm not too sold on Newhook. Hes only got 4 goals. But hockey Canada always seem to take one guy from the NCAA so he isn't ruled out just yet by any means. Heres what I got.

Byfield - McMichael - Mercer
Cosens - Veleno - Newhook
Noel - Dellaandrea - Lavoie

Smith - Byram
Harley - Addison
Bahl - Merkley

Bernard-Docker looks most likely if there is going to be an NCAA player.

So what? Boston College has only played 9 games and he's tied for the team lead in goals as a freshman. Matthew Boldy only has 1 goal (and 1 point) in the same amount of games with BC and he'll almost surely be part of the powerhouse USA team. Stats don't tell the whole story, and even if they did Newhook has performed fine.

The tournament being on big ice will be no issue for Byfield. The guy is a fantastic skater. Zero concerns there.

Based on CHL/Russia Challenge, it is fairly easy to say that team OHL has the most talents who can match up Team Russia Selects.

Lafreniere Veleno Lavoie (replacing Dach)
McMichael Byfield Noel (chemistry during 2 games)
Perfetti Thomas Tomasino (great chemistry during 2 games)
Foudy Dellaandrea Cozens (checking line)

Last forward = let the 3 days camp decides

Byram Bernard-Docker (Byram demonstrated excellent offense)
Bahl Harley
Smith Barron (Smith is better in the third pair, demonstrated less offensive talent)
McIsaac ( if he can play 5 games ) If he does not get back in time = take Merkley (1), Addison (2), Chisholm (3)
