He’s Latvian so we know he’ll excel.
This is from the Elite Prospect (EPRinkside) article “A Thorough Review of the Candidates of the NCAA 2020-21 Mike RichterAward” from Ryan Lambert

There are two obvious outliers in this group:
  1. Stauber, whose save percentage took a beating toward the end of the season (.889 over his last nine games), stands out on the lower end after a phenomenal first two-thirds of the campaign.
  2. Mitens, whose 5-on-5 save percentage (.949), stands well above the rest.
The case for Mitens is interesting: As mentioned, he played a smaller percentage of his team's minutes than most of the other finalists, but nonetheless faced the fourth-most expected goals of anyone in the group, according to InStat. In fact, only two goaltenders faced more xG per 60 minutes of ice time (Knight and LaFontaine). Of further interest, two of his games — which count as legitimate Div. 1 stats — were against Div. 3 Adrian, and that needs to be noted. It also needs to be noted that he didn't even do that well against the Bulldogs, giving up four goals on 40 shots. In fact, his stats are as good as they are despite that rather poor weekend.

More from the article:

The good thing about having expected-goals statistics for college hockey is that it allows you to compare what they "should have" conceded versus what they actually did. It should come as no surprise that all nine finalists were much better than xG suggested they should be, but there were three goalies who separated themselves from the pack fairly decisively.

Before I did this final round of research, I assumed my top three would look something like Knight, Mitens, and McKay (despite the light nightly workload). Only Mitens ended up in my top three, because Knight had a tough job most nights, and had a few too many games where he conceded three or more goals (nine of his 20 appearances). Years from now, he will probably be viewed as the best goaltender to have played in college hockey in 2020-21, but he didn't have the best season. I would rank it the fourth-best among this group.

Well Latvia or Latvija is the pride of the Baltic and Latveria is the fictional country that Dr Doom rules.

I don’t know what “Latavia” is but it may be a pharmaceutical product of some kind.

I thought everyone in the NY/NJ/CT tri-state area knew about the Tingus Pingus rant. Michael Rappaport the actor went off in a viral video and embarrassed himself after the Knicks picked Porzingas. He insulted Porzingas and then doubled down on his ignorance by saying he'd never heard of Latvia which he called Latavia.

As an aside, the maternal side of my family apparently hails from the banks of a river in Latvia, at least that's what my mom told me.

I’m half Latvian but I actively ignored Rappaport since forever because he’s always been an abusive asshole so I would have missed that story.

It was pretty hard to miss it if you follow the Knicks and have kids who see everything that gets widespread coverage on the internet. The internet never misses an opportunity to spread stupidity.

Man that's great! I'm really enjoing these times where there are three youngsters in ahl - Kivlenieks, Silovs, Mitens and one NHL G.

This season is pretty bad for them except Mitens so I have great hopes for the next season.
