Than again, the reward could have been Barzal.
McDavid, Eichel, Marner, Werenski, Provorov, Barzal, Rantanen, and Hanafin.

That draft was loaded, but as I say often, if we couldn’t get one of the d-men, I wanted Barzal or Zacha...

Barzal was the only one available at #9. It is possible that the Sharks will have an even "better" position, but this draft is supposedly not the strongest one.

I was thinking maybe the sharks should sign a PTO for that 3c spot just incase. Colin Wilson is actually not a bad player and could possibility do that role if no one else seems able.

23 man NHL roster, plus 4-6 on Taxi Squad. Must have 3 goalies minimum.

Training camp = 36 players max. (Guessing that means that the 10 guys on AHL contracts won't even be invited.)

Sharks have 44 NHL contracts (plus Ozzy). So, eight of those guys won't be able to come to camp in Arizona (have to wait for AHL camp). Thinking that McGrew, playing in ECHL, won't be invited either. Chekhovich in KHL won't be coming.

Potential CHL overagers: Emond, Merkley, Kotkov, Hamaliuk. Sharks might need Emond with Barracuda, if they want to go with six pro goalies, especially has three are earmarked for NHL.

With camp opening Thursday, I'm thinking they'll release the roster on Wednesday or so.

There goes Koekkoek to Edmonton. Not much else out there but if it’s a throwaway season, no reason not to let Merkley and Middleton have the spots.
I think Merkley should be played in the best spot for his development. If he’s ready for the NHL, great. If not, no harm in assigning him to the taxi squad and having him practice with the Sharks. However, when the AHL starts, it might be better for him to play top minutes and 1st PP with the Cuda than limited minutes with the Sharks. Not everyone learns best by getting thrown in the deep end.

With Merkley, it's been almost a year with no hockey? How is that going to impact his development?

A lot of people are going to use the pandemic as an excuse for why their prospects failed...and sometimes, they'll be right!

Pasichnuk makes sense if they’re willing to play Ferraro or Simek on their off side since that would make 4LD. I see Merkley maybe coming on board later in the season especially if we fall out early.
Oh for sure. I really hope Merkley comes up about 20 or 30 games in. Offensively he's going to look really out of place in the AHL especially if he's bulked up more than what he showed a little bit ago. He'll be hard to keep down but right now they need reliable more than offense until they get the new system working correctly.

Also, way too much is made here of people playing the offside. Many players prefer it.

Merks is gonna need to get to 185 if he wants to play in the NHL. 170 is way too small for a defenseman, especially in the playoffs. There are exceptions, obviously. Spurgeon and Ellis both come to mind. That said, I think those are the exceptions and shouldn’t be viewed as signs that Merks is ready. If he comes in and earns a spot, great, but I am not ready to pencil him in. I think he takes a development year and ends up better for it. Mueller certainly didn’t benefit from being rushed in 2015.

The last update on his weight already had him at 185...

So he is already at boyles size.
Boyle was closer to 200 lbs, was stocky looking and carried most of his weight in his thighs and ass. Kinda like Martin St Louis. Merkley is built like EK65 was coming out of the draft. Bird like. Merkley needed to build everything up. The bigger his thighs and ass get though the better off he'll be as a pro. Seems like he's made some good progress already but he's going to need more still. The 185 report was a few months ago so hopefully he's over 190 now. If he's that heavy he'll dominate the AHL and be in the NHL very quick. Without playing games and practicing for 10 months though I just don't see him making the Sharks out of camp. Taxi squad sure at least until the AHL camps starts.

I say play the youngsters, but don’t completely try to tank. Once you get that stink of losing on them, it’s hard to get rid of it. Look at Buffalo and Edmonton.
It should be pretty obvious they are planning for this to be a “transition year,” but don’t stink it up enough to where we ruin the youngsters.

Two things. To most, this isn’t a playoff year or if it is, it’s not being confused with a contender so Merkley being whatever isn’t going to make a difference. Secondly, Mueller went straight into a top four role. Merkley won’t be doing that so it’s a much easier transition if he’s able to make it in the NHL.

I suspect Merkley is far too good not to make the team this year. My prediction is he’s going to be in our starting lineup opening night.

Then we’ll basically sink or swim by how good EK65, Burns and Merkley drive offense. If each of those guys plays to their potential, that defense is bananas, production-wise.

I think it will also be a test, can this work as the core and identity of the team through the end of Merkley's ELC, and Burns contract, or do they have to make bigger changes.

agreed. As I said in a previous post I think this season is so weird, with so many unknowns (the likelihood of a full shut down cause of an outbreak is NOT totally unlikely), why not be patient, see what you got, implement the system, etc. it’s almost like a half season long training camp.

I’m sure if they’re playing well and are competitive, DW will get them help.

Just going to be frustrating after a whole stinky season, an almost year break, and then just to suck again. It’ll have been since early March 2019 since they were good, and we’ll be waiting until October of 2021 until they *might* be good again.
That’ll be a 32 month stretch of bad hockey.

On the bright side, our collective expectations are extremely low this time around. We shouldn't have any delusions of grandeur this year.

True but last year or next year are the right years to suck and have your first. This year is a pretty bad draft so far
Even in a “weak” draft though the top 5-7 picks are pretty impactful players. I wouldn’t hate having a Power, Johnson, Beniers, Edvinsson, Clarke ect.. in the system.
