By far their best overall performance. First game where it seemed like they were actually playing a system, too. They largely controlled the flow of that game. I wasn't that impressed with Team Finland, so I'm not sure how much to make of this, but it's a good performance to have heading into the knockout rounds.
  • Robertson is known for his goal scoring, but I've been really impressed with his playmaking ability. Great for him to finally pot one too.
  • Great to see Madden bury a couple. He's a confident kid, so it's nice to have him flying high right now.
  • Norris with his best game of the tournament. He needs to be like that every game.
  • I've given Kemp hell, but he played well tonight. His simple style of play fits well against Finland. Hopefully he can build on that.
  • Primeau was good. He wasn't overly tested as most of the Finnish shots were fairly harmless, but where he struggled against Kazakhstan with rebound control, he was very good with it tonight.
  • Cates is lucky he didn't connect with that stupid elbow attempt on Tolvanen or his tournament would be over and Tolvanen would have been seriously hurt. Incredibly stupid move by him. I hope the coaches address it with him.
  • I wonder if Wahlstrom is hurt or battling an illness. He stopped playing after taking a regular shift to start. He also wasn't in the locker room for the post-game speech by Hastings. O'Brien also barely played. With Keyser and Miller both out sick tonight, I wouldn't be surprised if some other guys were sick tonight, especially as they mentioned Team USA is in the same hotel as Team Sweden and the Swedes were missing a ton of guys today with illness.

If Hughes and others are healthy for the next bout, I don't want to see him in the lineup.

Not that you are, but I wouldn't count on that unless the IIHF were to suspend him. He should only be a 4th liner on this team anyway, but Hastings and company are giving him a far bigger role than he deserves.

Much better game, and well deserved victory, but the score was a bit flattering. A couple of soft ones let in by UPL.

We've seen USA teams get off to mediocre starts before making a serious run at gold before. The team is headed in the right direction now. The Czechs rely heavily on their top-3 forwards and their defense isn't the strongest, so we're in good position to move on.

My biggest concern at this point is Jack being 100%, or close to it, getting the sick kids well and keeping the rest illness free. Wash your hands, boys!

Cates needs to be banned regardless. Intent was there. No place for that bullshit.

Not the correct thread but I’m very disappointed that the only game not on tv tomorrow is Finland/Canada.

I thought we played very well. Finland wasn't that good, so maybe we just beat a weak Finnish team, but its hard to fault the team for winning.

Primeau did well in net. I'd much rather he plays in net against the Czech's than Keyser. It doesn't seem like Knight was going to get a chance in this tournament. If we get bad goaltending in the knockout rounds, Hastings deserves significant blame for how he handled this. Even if Knight was the worst of the three goalies, which I don't agree with, he still should've played against one of the easier teams. The other others haven't had great tournaments, and won't return next season. They haven't shown that they need to take all the minutes in this tournament because Knight is so inferior.

I liked how the defense played yesterday. Nearly mistake-free, except Hughes trying to do too much and a couple of St. Ivany shifts. Thats always going to happen with Hughes, so you hope he creates a lot of offense. I didn't think he had a good game, but he's going to be needed to create a lot of offense in the knockout rounds. People criticized St. Ivany and Kemp both making the team, but Kemp hasn't been bad. If you limit his role to what he's good at, he can be a quality #6D who kills penalties and gives the team some size and physicality on the back-end. St. Ivany has been terrible all tournament. Hopefully Miller is ready for the QF game. If not, dress six D but only play 5. St. Ivany should not play any more shifts this tournament in close games.

The forwards have been a little better, but the lack of Hughes is showing. There is no star among the forwards. What we need is some new lines. Cates and Cockerill shouldn't see the ice again this tournament, unless the game is out of reach. Hopefully Hughes is able to play against the Czech's. Players who've impressed me this tournament have been Farabee, Madden, Poehling, Robertson, Barratt and Chmelevski. Wahlstrom and Norris have had good moments, as well. O'Brien and Drury haven't had the ice time to make much of an impact.

I'd try out these lines and pairs against Czech's.

Poehling-Norris-Farabee
Robertson-Barratt-Madden
Chmelevski-Hughes-Wahlstrom
Drury-O'Brien
Cates-Cockerill

Samberg-Anderson
Hughes-Kemp
Samuelsson-Miller
St. Ivany

Primeau
Keyser

Don't know what the IIHF rule is for that situation, but totally agree that was a garbage move. I'm certain everyone is happy Cates didn't connect, probably even him in hindsight.

I not seeing a lot from Barrett,I was looking forward to seeing him play being a Hawks fan.As far as to say ,very disappointed.

You’ve posted the same sentiment in three different threads. I gave a long reply on the Hawks board, so I’ll avoid that here except to say that I disagree. Love the little things he does, as well as the obvious.

Can’t really be any worse than the three easy goals Keyser let in against Sweden.
This is a little late since Primeau did well yesterday but, I don't get the distaste for Keyser. Sure he hasn't been great but I've also seen people arguing that Keyser has no place in a tournament like this. Unless I'm being blinded by bias I dont see three "easy" goals that Keyser let in.

Samuelsson has been just fine , good exit passes, plays under control .

No.

He's fine when he has no pressure in his face but the second there is even a hint of said pressure he does something dumb with the puck.

The only thing he's done well in this tournament is hit people. He made one nice poke check in the first game.... which was only necessary because of a poor exit pass that led to the rush.

He then proceeded to get jobbed behind the net by a player with no stick which led to a quality chance against.
