I guess the speed of Martschini could become an important weapon against the slowly Italian defensemen in the first game.

The Swiss have speed to burn with or without Martschini on attack. They are even faster than last year (and unfortunately way smaller).

It's the all-round pure skill package he offers, that sets him apart from others.

But I agree. If there's a match, he should mostly be able to play his game, it's against Italy.

That's a huge blow.

Even if the Boston series were quite wearing, pretty weird considering he played just 40 games this season. And nowhere near top-line minutes.

what kind of lines they have been rolling lately? Kukan confirmed?

Goal: Genoni (Berra)

Defense: With Kukan not coming, the pairings seem to be set.

Josi-Weber
Frick-Fora
J.Moser-Diaz
Genazzi-Loeffel

If they go with 7Ds, one of Moser/Genazzi would likely sit.

Offense: not everything set in stone yet. But most likely line-up is:

Praplan-Hischier-Fiala
Ambühl-Haas/Kurashev-Hofmann
Martschini-Haas/Kurashev-S.Moser
Scherwey-Bertschy-Rod
Riat
Bertaggia

Andrighetto anyone?
Or was it ruled out already?
Not a huge fan and he wouldn't turn us into greatness, but always liked his play with the NT on the bigger ice.
And considering we still have Bertaggia in the depth chart, he would be a massive upgrade...

Yeah, Kukan is a bummer, especially after it seemed on Tuesday he'd be ready to come. Maybe the Blue Jackets made some pressure.

Andrighetto hasn't been ruled out officialy. We'll see, he's RFA but could need some arguments to gain a new contract. He would be an upgrade for sure.

Yeah, Kukan is a bummer, especially after it seemed on Tuesday he'd be ready to come. Maybe the Blue Jackets made some pressure.

It's the annoying thing, he was reported as ready to join, both before and after Columbus went out. And his reason doesn't make much sense, he hasn't played many games and didn't have much ice time in most of them.

So either he got pressured into finding an excuse not to come, or sports journalists like to write things without making sure that their source is reliable. Come to think of it, neither of these things should be a surprise.

Andrighetto hasn't been ruled out officialy. We'll see, he's RFA but could need some arguments to gain a new contract. He would be an upgrade for sure.

It's been reported that a solution could be found (maybe by the same guys who said that Kukan will come, so no excessive enthusiasm), and that he may possibly have an agreement for next season already. And even if not, Andrighetto is not comparable to Timo Meier in the sense that he's not going to cash out on his next contrac. He's actually in a position where a strong WC could help his case.

You can think what you want about Andrighetto as an NHL player but he has always been money in the bank for your national teams going back to juniors. On top of that the Wing is easily the worst position of our roster so far. So I think he would be a significant if not huge upgrade for us.

Wow, didn't expect that commitment so fast. That's an upgrade, also for the PP. Probably means that Martschini is back to 13th Forward or even out of the lineup.

Any idea which one is going to be first choice, Berra or Genoni? Or are they sharing a game time?

Berra will help to share the workload in the group stage but there is no doubt in my mind that Genoni will be the number one goaltender for the big games.

Agree on the goalies, Genoni will carry most of the workload, unless something unexpected happens (see how Hiller went into the 2017 as the starter but lost the job to Genoni, or the other way around at the Olmypics).

Great news regarding Andrighetto, a much needed morale boost after Kukan's decision. I guess we're now free to speculate about his place in the lineup. He worked pretty well with Hofmann in 2016, and was first tried with Haas and Scherwey last year, then Corvi and Niederreiter before settling with Vermin and Meier, but they won't be at the tournament.

Maybe he could play with Hischier and Fiala, with Praplan dropping to the Haas line, or he could play with either Haas or Hofmann as both are good goal scorers who could make the best of Andrighetto's passes. Moser could work too as he's the closest thing we have to Meier.

I would try Anrighetto - Haas - Moser and Hofmann - Kurashev - Ambühl and keep the top line unchanged. In any case, Martschini is probably out of the top 9 and 13th forward at best. I don't think Fischer will release anyone, as even though Bertaggia looks like the weakest player on the team, he could be a better option than Riat in case Rod or Scherwey gets injured.

Fischer will keep his options open, keep all players in Bratislava and nominate only those who will play.

Looking forward to Saturday/Sunday, I'm feeling the excitment coming. :)

I'd go for something like that as well, a good balance between playmaking skills and scoring on all the three top lines. Hopefully the lack of big bodies in front of the net won't be felt too much.

...even though we all know that as ut happens every year, the fourth line will be the driving force of the team, i'll miss Schäppi.

Little weird the Kukan thing though. Hopefully Fisher won't be mad at him forever like it happened with Malgin for apparently a much smaller issue.

The first six games are three sets of back-to-backs so the goalies will most likely split them. Who starts when is anybody's guess though.

While I'm here; could anyone provide info/guesses regarding the PP units? Thx

With Andrighetto hopefully arriving there will be a mixup in the PP-formations so it's a pretty wild guess.

Josi and Loeffel are probably the defenders. Praplan, Ambühl, Hischier, Hofmann, Fiala, Kurashev, Moser, Haas and Andrighetto are probable forwards.

Fischer registered today 12 Forwards and 3 defenders (Josi, Weber and Loeffel). Bertaggia and Riat are not registered and therefore probably won't play this weekend. As expected.

In the friendlies the units were like this (if I remember correctly):

PP1: Hischier, Fiala, Praplan, Ambühl, Loeffel

PP2: Haas, Kurashev, Hoffmann, Martschini, Josi

Andrighetto will likely get a spot one on of the two units as well though as he joins the roster.

Edit: Got beaten for the first answer

A spot in the faceoff circle. :sarcasm:
