Is the roster complete? Or are they still waiting for someone?
Zadorov should arrive tomorrow. After that there are still two spots left. They can be used for NHLers even after round 3 (I for my part can see Boston walk over Carolina, Provorov might still sign and come, but unlikely, Tarasenko if St.Louis fails) or in case of injuries.

It’s kind of funny how every other favorite lost today but apparently Russia is the team that is in trouble.
:) I have already suggested to make a negativity thread for the guys who can see a dark side in every turn of events imaginable.

I’m sorry, but Dadonov and Brett Hull should never be used in the same sentence.

I would want a 20-something Dadonov before I'd want a 20-something Brett Hull for my international team. I'm not just saying that because he scored 2 sniper-in-the-weeds goals today.

Can't find footage of young Hullie at the World Championship but I'm sure he skated in long, relaxed figure-8s, occasionally scored a goal, and wondered why Team USA was losing 7-5.

How did the team look today?

Maybe there is to many stars in this team? They should have gone with mostly NHL stars and then more defensive players from KHL, players that buys their roles.

I look forward to the addition of Zadorov. I praised Zaitsev earlier on in this thread, and he's playing well enough so far. Let's see how the defence shapes up when we play better teams.

The top powerplay unit was fantastic. The whole team looked pretty good for about 15 minutes of the 1st period. Lots of individual talent.

As the game went on, we saw that the team wasn't playing well enough at even strength, considering the roster. To end the game tied 2-2 with Norway in 5v5 goals is not a good reflection of the current lines/structure.

Hopefully they make a couple changes sooner rather than later. On to the next one.

Yeah, don't forget Norgs scored 2 goals in the last 5 minutes, when the score was 5-0... It didn't look great, but cmon, PP goals count as well and they impact a game's flow. If a team scores 6 PP goals, nobody will care, if it loses 5 vs 5 4-0, when all of those goals were let in the last few minutes...

Dadonov is no longer a 20-something year old, but even a peak 20-something year old Dadonov is barely qualified enough to be Hull’s waterboy.

Okay. The D needs improvement, but let's see what it looks like with a not jetlagged Garvrikov and Zadorov. Too many stars is not a problem at all. If we can get more, go for it.

Vasilevski will rest versus Italy and play against Czech? Sorokin starting vs Italy?
Back to back games upcoming. Vasilevskiy is obviously the starter for the game vs. the Czechs, so one of the backups will start tomorrow. Whether it's Sorokin or Georgiev is up to the coaching staff. Will be probably anounced today.

Round 3 is too far off. These players wont be able to arrive in time because they need to go through medicals by their club.
This is not exactly true. Round 3 is aready under way and will conlude on 23rd May at the latest if the western series goes to 7 games and the semifinals at WHC are in two weeks. So a player arriving on 22nd May would be technically able to participate in the QF(see Gavrikov who has played the day after his arrival) and easily in the SF. If both series go through the max of 7 games which I do not expect then of course it is highly unlikely a player would still make it in time. This is the worst case scenario for WHC teams expecting reinforcements. Best case though is the first Game 4 of the eastern series ends in a sweep as early as 16th May. In that case players could even play a good part of round robin games at WHC. The reality will be as always somewhere inbetween probably. So technically there is a real possibility to add NHLers after the 3rd round this year. Including the medical tests afterwards. Also all teams are different with that. Some take longer, some release players pretty quick. Also a guy like Ovechkin always just basically told the Caps to grin and bear and boarded like the first flight available.

Is it official Panarin not coming?

Would it still be possible to wait for Tarasenko?
Panarin hasn't said anything conlusive, but he gave some strong hints.

1.He said he's had some back problems. Minor ones obviously, but still.

2.He said half-jokingly he will be watching the teams salary cap situations rather than ongoing NHL playoffs. So he is serious about his free agency.

I doubt he has any interest at this point. And that hurts his rep with me for the time being.

It is possible to wait for Tarasenko and Svechnikov. Team Russia has two spots for players still. It will depend on how the NHL series go and if injuries to current roster players occur. I guess if it's likely the 3rd round series are headed for game 7 or even game 6 the book will be closed on the NHLers.

Well this is a great Russian team again, almost optimal. If datsyuk had a few years less, Panarin and Radulov, and maybe Voynov.

Tarasenko and Ovechkin are big names, but at least Oveckhin for me is very expendable. His peak on big ice was probably 2008 (line with Fedorov and Semin, when he was still dynamic and willing to play hard hitting game), and in this shape and time he just isnt build for it. He became PP specialist, and although Kuznetsov is not at his best right now, if you replaced Ovechkin with someone like Panarin it would be a killer line.

The only way i would try to play Ovy is with someone like Andronov and Telegin, so they hustle for him otherwise he just kills more or less any line chemistry that players like Panarin, Gusev, Dadonov , Malkin, Kucherov etc.. are able to create with great cycle.

It is yet to be seen how special team works against big teams (especially very suspect penalty killing ) and how they will be able to cope with teams like Finland, that choke the life out of every game....

Thoughts on today's game:

1. Grigorenko does nothing for the Malkin line. He gets in the way of his linemates, and has not contributed to any offence with Malkin in either the prelim games or against these two very weak teams. He also fails to set good screens or crash the net. It's past time he was sent down to the 4th line.

2. The top powerplay unit is red hot. What a nice sequence on the game winning goal:
Malkin->Kucherov->Gusev->Dadonov.

3. Ovechkin has been disappointing so far. His line has also looked worse of late. Hopefully we see some line changes soon, Russia will have a tough time against good teams when both Malkin and Ovechkin aren't getting enough support to succeed at even strength.

4. Kucherov has incredible individual skill. He seems to have particularly good chemistry with Malkin and with Gusev. When all three share the ice, they consistently create high danger scoring chances.

5. Georgiev wasn't tested much, but was solid when he needed to be. I am happy with the goaltending options this team has.

Who else wants to see Gusev-Grigorenko-Kucherov line? Dating back to the red army jr team days where they destroyed mhl as 17 year olds

lots of reasons why it wouldn't work today but maybe there's still some hidden 'magic' chemistry there.. Like modern CSKA version of the KLM line, or Mogilny-Fedorov-Bure..

Not tomorrow, but I would pay to see that.

Ive missed the first 2 games, and will miss the one tomorrow as well unfortunately. Can anyone please share what lines they play? How has Malkin looked and who is he playing with?

How many more 2-goal games in a row before you can admit someone is a legit IIHF sniper and a big asset to his international team? We are not comparing NHL resumes here. Hull scored 7 goals and took 9 penalties in his 1 trip to the WC. It's as if I keep saying, "I'd want Cam Newton for my perfect college football team" and you keep saying "Drew Brees has more touchdowns in the NFL, dummy."
