God I hope

I will be really really surprised, because it goes against everything the Pens have done in the last 10+ years, if the Pens take a Russian forward in the first round...they don’t scout much there and seem to value other things than the most skilled player...unfortunately imo

I’d rather trade back/out of #21 and take 2-3 projectable but lower upside players than swing on a boom or bust at #21 like Suzuki or Lavoie. Krebs, Podkolzin, Newhook, Kaliyev... one of those lottery forwards falling to us is the dream IMO.
if the right guy falls there won't be that much of a risk, or at least a much lesser one. I think the key is going to be seeing if the goalie (knight) and lavoie or another off the board pick gets picked before us. ( i'm not sold on lavoie)
if they do we should be sitting pretty.

Podkolzin is seen as a top-3 offensive talent in the draft. I remember one of the insiders mentioning that theres no way he gets past atleast detroit, let alone drop out of the top-10. Krebs is possible though. Injured guys like that have fallen to us before.

His first picks have been Kapanen, Sprong, Gustavsson, Lauzon and Addison. Two of those were probably among the three most skilled players left on the board at the time, Kapanen wasn't short on it, Gustavsson is a goalie and moot and Lauzon's the odd man out.

It would be unlike them to take a Russian, but high skill is right up Rutherford's alley.

The most recent NBC mock has us taking Soderstrom...sweet

21. Pittsburgh Penguins
Victor Soderstrom (defenseman, Brynas IF, Sweden)

The four goals and seven points in 44 games don’t really tell the tale for the 5-foot-11, 179-pound D-man who's got the skating and smarts always expected out of Swedish defensemen. Soderstrom would be a great get for a Penguins team that’s eventually going to need a young successor for Kris Letang. Perhaps Soderstrom can help inject Pittsburgh with the kind of young, talented players needed to give the Pens a jolt of energy.

yeah, not much chance of him falling to us but with the Russian factor and I think I read somewhere that he's already signed to play over there. he could fall enough so we could move up to get him.

slow day, wasting my life waiting for something to happen on the trade front. I've started to look at the 4 maybe 5 (if we include broberg) defensemen that might fall to us. right now I would rank them
1. broberg… don't really see him being still on the board, but dobber & hockey prosp. have him falling to us so….
2. Harley at 6-3 193# his up side is off the charts and I love up side:laugh: but he does have those wtf moments.
3. soderstrom 5-11 #179 and he's a righty
4-5. tied..seider 6-3 208 is a righty and has the strength to play now and a safe pick. vs york 5-11 189 who has more up side.
I don't see much separating these last 4 :dunno: how do you guys have them ranked?

Does anyone not like Podkolzin?

I dont even think he's top 10 skill wise but I do like that he has some motor to him. Kind of like Radulov.

I don’t. I’d not even consider him a slam dunk at 21. It’d still depend on who else is there.

I don’t care how hard he plays or how mature his defensive game is.. it’s the 1st round.

The year the Blues stole Tarasenko 16th overall, I commented in my mock (where I had Tarasenko "a gift dropping to slot ten", due to the "Russian factor") how this was a top five guy. I am going to go out on the line right now and say this kid is the best up and down winger in the class, and everyone should start praying their team doesn't pass him by, because he is the real deal, from Russia with love.

It'd be going pretty crazy to have as talented a kid as him there.

That said... an inability to use team mates is something I'd consider a big red flag, and for a team in our situation, a first rounder who definitely won't be more than trade bait for two years isn't ideal either. So I don't know if I'd pick him either.

Podkolzin signed with SKA St. Petersburg for two seasons. They keep their players through their deals, by and large. So, if you commit to taking him in the first round you are accepting a timeline of him coming over in 21-22. I don't know that every team would want to commit to that.

Interestingly, his timeline for debuting in the NHL coincides with the first season of the Seattle franchise. So maybe he would be a nice plug-and-play winger for a team expected to lose a winger in the expansion draft.

Just throwing stuff out there.

Tarasenko had more goals in the KHL in his draft year than Podkolzin had in the MHL, VHL, U18s and U20s combined.

that it! it's a good reason for some teams to let him slide....we snatched geno out of there . we could do the same with this guy.:naughty: and I think he might like having the chance to play with geno.

The only thing he has in common with Tarasenko is that they both like borscht.

I'm going with Phil Tomasino as our pick @ 21. Going all projection....Tomasino is a puppy who doesn't turn 18 until after the draft but he's got elite speed and agility. In today's NHL, I'll take that kid with superior skating. Skilled player who didn’t produce big numbers because he was playing a limited role (middle 6, 2nd PP) on a Niagara IceDogs trying to make a Cup run with overagers.

We should get a poll going before the draft. If we still have the pick next weekend.

I’m liking Bjornfot. I haven’t looked at many prospects except Boldy (who will be a top 10 pick) and a couple others. The Swede may drop into the early 2nd round but we don’t have one of those anyway and not a high one.
