2019 NHL Draft, Pt. II

Looking like they are picking 9, 10 11 or 12. barring a lottery win

Matthew Boldy is a name to really keep a eye on. Ties to Brackett. and would fill a huge need for the Canucks at LW

Given this team did their usual run of winning games when it doesn't count and our draft position slipped I can live with Boldy for sure, a badly needed scoring left winger with silky mits. Give me him over someone like Soderstrom all day long.

what an astonishing thing to say. from my quick calculations, EP had 64g, 101a for 165 pts in 213 games (starting in the superelit league in 2015-16)...that doesn’t include his nhl totals this year.

hughes had 106g, 225a for 341 points in 165 games (starting in US juniors 2017-18).

what exactly are you basing your pettersson >hughes on? “lmao” indeed
Blowing up swedish records beats Hughes junior career
Proven PPG pace in the NHL beats might be PPG pace.

Would you do 9th OA for Hischier? You could get a 50-60 point guy in that range or would you rather stick with the one you have?

Would people be disappointed if we took Soderstrom with our pick (8th-10th)?

I would not be disappointed. Preference should still go to one of the dropping forwards.

Here's an example mock from the main board:

1. C Jack Hughes
2. RW Kaapo Kakko
3. C Dylan Cozens
4. C Kirby Dach
5. RW Vasily Podkolzin
6. LHD Bowen Byram
7. C Alex Turcotte
8. C Trevor Zegras
9. LW Matthew Boldy
10. C Peyton Krebs

Zegras or Boldy would be good choices at 9th.

Stylistically/team needs Boldy is a fit for this team, he brings some decent size and playmaking ability to the LW. He'd be a good fit alongside Pettersson-Boeser or form a pair with Boldy-Horvat.

Boldy is very fascinating. Very creative and high IQ. Accurate shot but not overwhelming. Anticipating and quick thinking are at elite level.

Knock on him is that his skating is average at best and he doesnt move his feet enough.

Wont be a play driver.

However he is a wizard once the play is in the Ozone. And speed becomes less a factor and more about edges and skills.

I'm hoping one of the American kids are there for us which is likely. Turcotte, Boldy, Zegras, Caufield. I see all these guys as top line players.

Podkolzin, Dach, and Cozens all have very average stats in their respective leagues. These are the three players that scare me the most who are consistently ranked in the top 10. I could see Dach completely explode next year, but he's very frustrating as a prospect.

Not enough love for Soderstrom and Heinola. Both averaged solid minutes in men's league's and both showed flashes of brilliance while holding there own defensively. Serious upside on both these guys who are still very underdeveloped.

Wildcards are Peyton Krebs and Arthur Kaliyev. Krebs plays on one of the worse teams in the WHL, basically, everything ran through him on that team as not much happens outside of him. He's sort of excellent at everything but not elite at any particular thing. Kaliyev is in special company for scoring goals as a U18 in the OHL but appears to have warts to his game. His numbers are exceptional though and you wonder what his numbers would be if he plays with intensity and purpose at all times. These two, I can see rising in redrafts as the years go on.

If I'd have to rank a top 15 right now:

1. Hughes
2. Kakko
3. Byram
4. Turcotte
5. Zegras
6. Boldy
7. Krebs
8. Caufield
9. Dach
10. Podkolzin
11. Cozens
12. Soderstrom
13. Kaliyev
14. Heinola
15. York

Sidenote: 2020 draft looking pretty spectacular.

Alexis Lafrenieré
Anton Lundell
Noel Gunler
Quinton Byfield
Lucas Raymond
Alexander Holtz
Cole Perfetti
Marco Rossi
Jamie Drysdale
Jan Mysak
Justin Barron
Antonio Stranges

Zegras or boldly at 9 and I’m a happy man.

No kidding. That's literally the best case scenario for the Canucks, aside for the unlikely miracle of moving up in the draft which I'm not even entertaining as a possibility so that I have no reason to be disappointed when it predictably does not happen.

Krebs too! Would take Krebs and Zegras over Boldy. We still need more elite play-drivers over complimentary pieces so i'd rather take at risk at a higher ceiling (ala Petey) than go for the safer guy.

Actually i'd be pretty ecstatic if we got Krebs at 10, guy does it all.

Would you guys be okay with Podkolzin if he slipped to us at 9/10? Could definitely see it happening between the russian factor and his commitment to "staying until he's ready".

He's easily the most polarizing guy in the top-15, although seems to be a consensus top-5 in all scouting services.

Isn’t there a big difference in ceiling between Zegras and Boldy?

Winning the last 3 games is hurting more and more.

Swing for the fences!!!!

Potential Faller for the Canucks to look at in the 2nd Rd is Nils Hoglander. He'd be a top half 1st Rd player if it weren't for his size.

You know, you might be on to something here. Particularly if the player the Canucks really liked at 8-12 in the draft was a already gone. Sort of a reverse of the Schneider-Horvat deal, with a significant young piece coming back.

But it would take some serious kahones for Jimbo to trade his first rounder in a year in which the Canucks are actually hosting the draft. Almost inconceivable really.
Yeah, doubt that happens after all the rumours floating around that Aqulinni didn’t want JB trading our picks this year.

Kind of ironic that NJ traded their top 10 pick for Schneider when they hosted the draft though.

Without the predictable, annoying and totally useless little 3 game win streak we could have had a shot at Byrum or Turcotte who McKenzie has ranked 6 and 7.

Do you guys think that having the draft in Vancouver,,Jimbo or who ever is drafting might want to make a splash..
Who is the most to step in to the line up sooner also...

Love to see a splash at the draft. The only two guys who could play in the league next year are Hughes (who's a for sure) and Kakko (who's a maybe). The cost to move up, from where we are selecting though, would be way too high. We would have to give up Bo plus our first this year and our first next year to get the teams' picking first and second to even look our way.

I'm very surprised that Byram wasn't higher on Bob's list.

Seems as if one of Turcotte/Zegras/Kaliyev will be there at 9 and I basically consider them as good as any of the other prospects outside the top 2.

Bryman is most likely going in the top 4. He
Is way too good l. Turcotte is a let’s hope he fly under everyone’s radar and lands on our laps.

If we don’t win a top 3 pick it’s back to plan b. Which is sit around at the draft and wait for an elite player to fall on our laps like how Hughes and petey fell to Vancouver.

This will be Dach if anyone falls.

I don't see how a player in the USNTDP could fly under any teams radar, they've all been heavily scouted for years.

IMO the only way to get an undervalued player high in the draft is to draft one out of a European mens league where it's a bit tougher to get a good read on a young player who's playing against grown men and getting limited ice time.Pettersson is a good example of this,William Nylander is another.

The Canucks have historically shied away from drafting Russians (yes, Bure) but tend to avoid Russians in the first round. They will occasionally take the odd Russian in the later rounds.

Why isnt theres more talk of taking Spencer Knight if we pick 9th to 11th?

Some scouts across the NHL are saying he is a franchise Goalie.

Markstrom might be too old in 3-4 yrs when were going to legitimate threats and Demko is still very much a lottery ticket.

Why not draft Knight and really really solidify that core.

Goalies can still steal a playoff round all on their own.

Were going to be contending with McDavid Draisaittl Gaudreau Tkachuk etc in our division for years so we better have a solid solid goalie back there.
