You can't compare China and Canada. The quarantined ONE city and that was 40 Million people... they are in such proximity, transmission over there is much more likely/easier than here.

There's at least 16 cities under quarantined, more than 50 millions people (more than there is in Canada)
Wuhan, China, and at least 15 other cities have been quarantined as China attempts to halt the spread of the coronavirus. That's about 50 million people on lockdown.

There's a lot people in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver too. Don't think the same things can't happen here.
The difference is that we know it's coming, we know it's contagious and we know that every case should be treated with quarantined and of course, there's a lot less people by square foot than there's in China.

Canada will bring back some Canadians and they will be put in a 14 days quarantined.
Why would they do that for a simple flu?

It's not a simple flu…..there's no need to be panicking right now in Canada but treating this like the regular flu is exactly what we should not do, it's much more dangerous than the flu.

Right now…..the fight is over there. It's going to be a hell of a fight too, it already started…..ask anybody from there how their life look like right now compared to their usual routine. We'll find vaccine, we'll find antivirals and ways to stop spreading it but for now, we need to ride this thing as cautiously as possible.

I feel the only thing to do is really halt all flights to China until this is contained. Other nations will have to close borders. But there's potential for an absolute catastrophe and all it takes is one person.

The people have basically become weaponized without knowing it. No other way to counter it but drastic measures.

Ideally that is no more flights in from China, Thailand, Hong Kong and Singapore...for now.

Should have been done weeks ago but now it doesn't matter cause there some infected everywhere.
Anyway, nobody wants to go there now. Even staff and pilots. Most flights has stopped.
China has quarantined the epicenter and the region around it so the most probable to be infected can't even get out of their town to the next, they can't even get to the hospital easily.….so Canada is a long way from there.

I hate the narrative to compare it to the flu but we need perspective also.
There's roughly 1.3 billions of people in China and there's roughly 30 000 person infected.
If there's 0.1% that gets infected ,it translate into 1,300,000 cases. We're a long way from there.

As a giant dog lover...it's hard to read this.

Glad to know you're hanging in there (feel free to update your situation….will keep you occupied)
But if i were you, i would get ready for more time off and more quarantined (Sorry, i'm sure it's not what you wanted to hear)
The numbers will probably go to 100 000 - 120 000 before in starts to slow down, so be ready for that.
Should take another 4 to 6 weeks if everything goes "well" and all the efforts/sacrifice starts paying off.

Hope you stay safe and sane through this.

While walking our rescue dog, my wife stumbled on a barking Jetta. She opened the trunk, and there was a dog. In the trunk. With food, water and a blanket to sleep on. Someone had abandoned the dog, but instead of letting her loose, he had put her in the trunk of his beat up old Jetta. So we took a week to get to know her, and now she’s at home, safe and warm. We named her Jetta.

First visit to the vet he told us that she was lactating. Which means in typical fashion, the puppies were chucked in the garbage, and she was thrown out. Thrown out into a warmi-ish trunk, guess it’s better than being thrown out in the streets...

rescue group are overwhelmed everywhere, and especially in Wuhan, where people with pets that were expecting to be back home by now, haven’t been able to go feed their pets in a week.

Rescue groups there are risking detention and fines to go from house to house to give food and water to the pets. Breaking locks (with owners permission of course), and climbing through windows.

For context, Chinese detention: in a small room with 15 other people, shoulder to shoulder, with the lights on 24/7, with beatings if you fall asleep outside of allotted sleeping time

I don't trust any numbers and I don't know how anyone could know since there's no way they are telling the truth just like they didn't when SARS hit. I saw that nurse in China on youtube saying doctors told her it was closer to 90K cases and that was mid Jan. I read where the cases are doubling every 6.4 days or so (6. something I don't feel like looking it up)

granted it's stuff on youtube and I hope it's nothing close to that but i've read articles from doctors that suggest it's way higher then what they are saying. the other thing I saw was that at least early on they weren't giving out the kits to test, so no kit then they can't say you have it or not.

Well done for Jetta, can't save them all but you did your part. Seriously:

….but the rest is just a nightmare to read for me, on so many level. I think people over here doesn't fully grasp the extend of the crisis you guys have to deal with.

Meanwhile in Shangai, it is bustling with traffic.

Price fir visit to the great wall and forbiden city are pretty low.

BTW, it is much more than one city. Four major cities.
The country is closing down as far as we can see...

As I wrote it is also about RO: 2.5 is really bad, 4 is horrible.
Where do you get this "RO" value?

Coronavirus Epidemic Reaches Bleak Milestone, Exceeding SARS Toll

40,000+ infected.

97 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Officially worse than SARS.

Still alright @MasterDecoy ?

yeah I’m good.

considering I was around for sars, I was a little flippant about this latest epidemic. But yeah it’s far worst in every imaginable way.

People are slowly going back to work. Markets and such are still half abandoned.

it’s mostly Wuhan that got screwed hard. Most cities in China, Beijing included, are doing relatively well. But China has been in neutral since Chinese New Year holiday, 3 weeks ago. People are starting to go back to work. companies are taking a bath because they’re still paying full wages because it’s a national holiday. I thought they would extend the holiday again considering things aren’t getting better, but guess not. Companies are encouraged, but not required, to make arrangements for remote work. But this whole thing, with millions of people going back to work, could get ugly, very quickly. Or not. The whole country is getting a quick crash course on hygiene

the government is never gonna release the real numbers, but the economy was already slowing down before this thing hit. I’m guessing it completely wrecked the economy and it’s gonna take a while to recover.

We did our groceries for the week today, and the cost went up by a good 50%.

Jetta, the rescued dog, had an infection inside her uterus from giving birth. So we dropped her off at the vet for a hysterectomy. Surgery went fine, she’s recovering, well visit her tomorrow and bring her back home on Wednesday.

The wife in particular is going mental. She’s started teaching her lessons online, so it’s a good change from the absolutely mundane, boring, repetitive m bs we had been doing for three weeks non stop

to quote her: “three weeks locked in with your dumb ass I still don’t want to divorce you. It’s a good sign.”

considering how we met, it’s fate I guess

IIHF president Fasel: "It will not come to a World Championship with ghost games"

The 2020 World Championship in Switzerland is scheduled to start in about 69 days - or will it also be in jeopardy due to the circulating Coronavirus?

"We are in close contact with the organizers and try to analyze the situation," IIHF president René Fasel tells the Blick in an interview. "We will wait until 15 March to see how this pandemic develops. After that we might be able to say more." According to Fasel, the IIHF's medical commission is currently meeting in Budapest, where it will probably be decided that in a first step all international tournaments in March and all U18-events are going to be cancelled.

Will be interesting to see the related decisions made this spring.

Since Feb 10th above (40,000+ infected, 500+ deaths) stats have jumped to 80,000+ infected, 3,000+ deaths.

Not looking awesome. That's over 20 days, and the virus is barely out of China.

At this point, I'm not sure we'll have playoffs unless they decide to play them without crowds. Hockey being a contact sport, I would assume that the player association will have its say against this if/when we have to cross this bridge.

The NHL gm meetings are this week.

Other then Zamboni drivers, would think this topic will come up at some point.

Don't know if this was mentioned earlier in the thread but with stick plants like Bauer and CCM not producing sticks, could lead to a shortage at some point.

According to the Globe, Bauer, CCM and True Hockey all make their pro sticks in China, providing approximately 75 percent of NHLers with their sticks each year based on data from Gear Geek. NHL players typically use new sticks in every game and have several available to them during any given game. Modern sticks made of composite fibers commonly break during games; a single player can easily lose three or more sticks on a particularly unlucky day.

Maguire claimed during Thursday's broadcast that an equipment manager for either the Sabres or Red Wings claimed many of the team's players are “using a one-stick limit for practice and maybe two for games," and that players around the league are growing concerned where their next batch of sticks could come from.

Coronavirus' impact on life in China could potentially cause NHL stick shortage, per report

South Korea, Italy and Iran are getting worst fast too.

NA is still somewhat fine, though the USA might see a boom soon since they are approaching the 100 cases.

USA just isn’t testing or have faulty tests. Their number is probably way higher than what we know is my hunch.

I live in the USA and I have no idea if quarantine is covered by my health insurance. I worry about getting a million dollar medical bill.

Oh calm down, I was on the front lines when SARS hit and we are infinitely more prepared for COVID-19 than we were for SARS in 2003 and we made it through that ordeal without the doom and destruction that the social media Chicken Littles would have you believe.

Unfortunately China is a fertile breeding ground due to gross overcrowding and abysmal infrastructure. Let's focus our attention on finding a way to save as many lives as possible in China and spend less time contemplating ridiculous scenarios here.

Just wash your hands and refrain from putting your fingers in any of your orifices.......if you are diligent with both of these disciplines you won't need to worry about it....

I'm a virologist in training - I know what a R0 of around 4 with a long infectious incubation period does. The top scientists in the world are concerned, this isn't social media (not sure what you're insinuating but its profoundly stupid). If there was a team in Seattle this year, they probably wouldn't be able to play there right now.
