I’m guessing you would of been upset with sergachev over puljujarvi and thought it would come back to haunt them if they went that way?

Yes, I would have been upset, just like everyone else. JP was unanimously rated as a better prospect - not only on draft lists available to the public, but also on the draft lists of NHL teams (see: Brian Burke's comments regarding JP on OilersNow). I also watched JP play a dominant tournament at the WJCs (that was admittedly the extent of my viewings of JP prior to the draft). By most accounts, he was destined to be a top line forward (I'm also in the group that hasn't written him off yet, and I believe that the Oilers' handling of JP has been a significant factor in his development, which could also have been the case for Sergachev if he were an Oiler).

Not every prospect is going to pan out. There are busts in the top-10 every year. The primary goal is to pick the player that you think will be best 4-6 years down the road. But I think a secondary goal should be to minimize your misses in the top-10. Picking Broberg (or Sergachev) over a guy like Boldy (or Puljujarvi), who is ranked 5 (or 6) spots higher by a third of NHL teams is not a good strategy for minimizing misses.

Boldy and Caufield are not subject to the same circumstances as Puljujarvi. There isn't a language barrier with either of these players. As far as I know, neither player has lived away from their family since age 13. Both players have regularly played on NHL-sized ice.

Can I guarantee to you that Boldy or Caufield will be better NHL players than Broberg? Of course not. Nobody can. But teams need to use all of the information at their disposal to make the best decision. We aren't privy to all of the information. Most of us have limited viewings of the players, and we rely on draft lists available to the public. But almost every "expert" has Boldy and Caufield rated higher than Broberg. Based on those experts, and my limited viewings of the players, I take Boldy or Caufield over Broberg, just as I would have taken JP over Sergachev. Play the odds.

Goals? For a teenage defenseman in an adult league?

By the way, in the same league on a team that scored many more goals, Ekman-Larsson scored 3 in his draft year.
Look at our defence prospect depth and tell me that’s the area we need to focus on. If we don’t get a forward or Knight It’s ridiculous.

I know almost nothing about the players in this years draft. Guess I’m hoping for one of the forwards that are consistently ranked in the top 7 will fall to us?

its classic NFL misdirection and smoke screens. Why would any team announce who they want to take a week out from the draft? They are letting the media report this so if there is someone who really wants broberg? they will think they have to trade above the oilers to get him, pushing another forward option down to pick 8.

I don't think so. Did they feed information for Stauffer to inform the public that they took Broberg and Cozens out to dinner as a diversion when in reality, they didn't take him out to dinner?

Maybe I'm wrong and this is all just one giant smokescreen but I think some of you guys are in denial of the very real possibility that Broberg is #1 on their list assuming that Dach and Zegras are off the board.
I'm fully preparing for him to be the pick if the big boys are off the board just like I was fully prepared for Smith being the pick last year if the big names were off the board.

I guess I could say “Look at who just won the Cup and see if taking a goalie at 8 isn’t ridiculous” although I won’t, because anything can happen.

I’m not saying the Oilers should draft Broberg. I’m saying if your reason that they shouldn’t is because he only got two goals this season, you might be judging him all wrong.

You just quoted my post about prospect depth. Do you really think his 2 goals are the ONLY reason?

I guess that's kind of the thing. If knight turns out to be an elite number one or broberg turns out to be a top pairing guy, no one will complain about how we took them at 8.

Yup. Would rather have Lindholm or Rielly in hindsight.

Heiskenen had 10 points in his draft year and he went 3rd.

A lot more to it than just stat watching when prospects are playing in adult leagues.

That bum Hampus Lindholm had 1 goal in 20 games his draft year! 1 stinkin goal.

Of course he went on to execute the greatest choke hold in NHL history on Maroon. So, still a solid pick at #6.

Everyone should check out Lowetide's blog today. Big writeup on Broberg from a poster in Sweden that watches a lot of hockey. Interesting take on Broberg.

I still would take a forward.

I have faith in Holland and I'll give Broberg the benefit of the doubt till we see what he becomes. Personally I think he would be a massive mistake to take at 8 if Zegras, Caufield, Dach, Cozens are on the board. I've taking double, heck even triple looks at his game tapes and highlights reels, read every scouting report and fail to see anything that's a sure shot to translate into the NHL. However he is extremely raw and could develop weak side of his game extremely fast. Just the "could" in there that I'm worried about.

This is the only good news I am hearing about the pick. Better Broberg than Caufield. We already have a small top 6 forward in Yama. Do not need another.

I'm tired of hearing this. They're completely different players. It's like saying you wouldn't draft Boldy because we already have a big guy in Drai.

Broberg toolset is incredible, I don’t think it’s a reach at all for him at number eight.

He does need to work on his shot though

When was the last time a team in the 10ish range had this much smoke around a single player? Could just be a diversion doubt the team leaks who they want days before the draft especially to this extent where everyone is saying it’s their guy.

You don’t rate players with a tape measure. Why would we need the best goal scorer in the draft? Who needs his 72 goals? Sheesh
