I don't know anything about Thomson but I really like Pelletier/Hoglander with the 2nd

6'0" Finnish D player that came over to NA and in his first season with the WHL Kelowna Rockets posted 63GP 17G 24A TP 41
Older draft eligible player that has good offensive instincts but needs work on his defensive skills.

The way I think it well shake out...

1. NJD- Jack Huges
No way the Devils pass up the chance to take a center and have Nico and Huges as a 1/2 punch down the middle.

2. NYR- Kaapo Kakko - Only reason people aren't talking more about the possibility of Kakko going first is cause hes a winger. NYR well love this guy at 2.

3. CHI- Vasili Podkolzin - Stan has stated prior to the draft he would like a forward. Cozens could be there guy here also but Chicago has the ability to be patient with this prospect. With Kane/Toews/Strome/DeBrinkat in there top 6 and fillers like Caggulia/ Perlini/ Kahun/ Saad ect. They can give him the time he needs in the KHL and I have no doubt in my mind he wouldn't want to come to Chicago. If he was in North America he would the consensus #3 without a question.

4. COL- Bowen Byram - Colorado could take a forward but with Byram in there wheel house dont see how they pass on him. Barrie might be on the move or may have priced himself out of Colorado and Bryam is a worthy replacement and the best Dman hands down in this draft.

5. LAK- Dylan Cozens - One of the more NHL ready prospects in the top 10 Cozens would be a perfect fit for the LA Kings since they are tight against the cap coming in sooner rather then 3 years down the road. Not only that but hes a king type player. Has great hockey IQ and can play all forward positions. This one just makes to much sense if hes there at 5.

6. DET- Kirby Dach - The Red Wings would love to have a Dman here in the 6 spot but they have always drafted from a BPA stand point at the draft. Broberg is too much of a stretch for me at 6. They take a player they can mold in Kirby Dach. To me he could be the biggest boom or bust player in the draft. I see a nhl player no matter what but what I'm saying is his ceiling is extremely high.

7. BUF - Alex Turcotte - Buffalo gm has a tendency to stay away from CHL inthe last 2 years. I do believe they would have interest in Cozens and Dach however with 4 USDT players set to go in the top 15 they won't pass up. Turcotte well fit in nicely with there top 6.

If I'm the Oilers I take anyone of these players if they fall.. however if they dont that leaves us with.

Trevor Zegras
Peyton Krebs
Matthew Boldy
Arthur Kaliyev
Cole Caufield

Krebs is the safe choice for me. He had a extremely stranger year in kootney. Team had rumors/then conformation of relocating. Assistant Coach got fired for being a idiot on social media, and had to captain a lackluster hockey club in his second Jr. year. He has a extremely high effort level every night. He has always driven the play himself at every level he has played at. Hes a 3c at the very worst IMO. Good attitude goes a long way. Alot of people I respect in the hockey world have good things to say about this kid.

I feel K. Dach has J. Puljujarvi written all over him. Just a big guy with okay skating who can out muscle young teenager.

Trading the pick straight up is probably a mistake. But I think they should explore options that involve the pick in a package for a possible impact player. It's unlikely to happen and should not result in an obvious over payment.

As of right now the Oilers actually line up quite well with the expansion draft. Both Nuge and Larsson are up that year which mans that one or both could have an unsigned contract in their pocket waiting to be finalized after the draft. This was something that helped a fair number of teams last time. Larsson would make the most sense in this regard as it would allow the Oilers to go the 7-3 route and still protect Klefbom, Nurse and one more defensemen.

For forwards they would protect McDavid, Leon, Nuge and a combination of Puljujarvi, Yamamoto, Benson and anyone else they might add at the time. As for Lucic, if he is still with the team and won't waive it would be smarter to simply buy him out and deal with the consequences than it would be to waste an expansion slot.

All this means is that they should do what is best fro the team without really worrying about the expansion draft.

Yes but you're looking at the current roster.
Assuming that this team wants to contend and adds some players who will be here beyond next season, they will need to be protected to or lost to expansion.

As of now the Oilers are in good expansion draft shape because the roster is horrendous but that's not likely to hold over the next 2 seasons.
The potential lockout could play into this too.

My issue with dealing the pick beyond the expansion stuff is that the Oilers aren't close enough to being a contender or deep enough in the prospect pool to be able to afford dealing the pick for anything short of an impact forward locked up long term.

Furthermore, I don't see any team parting with a player like that for #8 even with a sweetener like Puljujarvi for instance added in. If you want to attach a cap dump to the pick, that devalues the pick and lessens the quality of player you're getting in return.

The Oilers won McDavid, probably the most hyped prospect of all time so it's obviously not fixed and Oiler fans are in no position to complain about lotteries being fixed.
the oil won mcdavid, are you sure that briefcase full of unmarked small denomination cats cash had nothing to do with that win?

I strangely feel the same about Matthew Boldy. Put up Great numbers but largely driven by Hughes (who I also think benefit from playing with a fellow 1st rounder).

Puljujaarvi put up impressive numbers playing with a superior talent in Aho.
We already did this a couple times before with drafting Schremp (Perry / Bolland / Kostitsyn)
And MA Pouliot (Crosby).

I'm becoming wary about drafting players from stacked teams, where you don't necessarily know who the catalysts are, and even the higher end guy might be significantly boosted as a result.

Yakupov / Galchenyuk in Sarnia was another combo in hindsight was hard to predict. Yaks numbers took a huge nose-dive his draft year because Chucky was injured.
In hindsight you have to wonder if he was really worth being the consensus 1st overall considering there was absolutely no improvement between his rookie year in Sarnia to his draft year. Usually you want to see a huge leap in production that second year when they're given significantly more ice-time.

Crosby wasn't on the team when we drafted Pouliot..

I still have zero problem with the Rob Schremp pick. The guy was talented. At 25 that was a good gamble.

Dach seems like the perfect fit for our team... We don't need small skilled playmakers...we need finishers

Too bad our management seems to be hung on getting faster. They will pick Cozens over Dach for sure

How can you say that when we don't even know who our management is yet?

Jesus, that stupid meaningless win against Calgary really screwed us. Injured McDavid and lost us a better pick. Like 2007 all over again.

Exactly, it is absolutely ridiculous to say the draft is fixed. McDavid would be in TO if the draft was fixed, or NY, or Chicago, or pretty much anywhere in the world but Edmonton. Ridiculous.

TOP 9

Hughes
Kakko
Byram
Podkolzin
Dach
Cozens
Krebs
Turcotte
Zegras

Oilers should have a choice of picking between 2 of the above. If a team reaches, then the Oilers might a have a choice of 1 of 3 from the above. Easy draft this one.

Ah right.. Pouliot who put up pedestrian numbers for the Q (In my assertion, a vastly inferior league).
The guy we traded down for, in lieu of Parise/Richards/Kesler/Burns/Getzlaf.

That was the year where, if you didn't walk away with a star, you were left in the dust by the rest of the NHL:

It's likely not, but sure is convenient that Chicago and New York get top-3 picks and Ottawa gets bailed out.

To be honest, I would have been steamed if Chicago got one of the top two now that Toews and Kane are getting to the wrong side of 30 (I realize they both had great seasons).

New York has some nice players but they don’t have a lot of high end talent.

I really like Cozens for the Oilers, so i am super disappointed at sliding to 8. It would have been a miracle at 7 but now it seems impossible without some whacky off the board drafting to help us along. There are several teams above us that i dont see passing on Cozens. If Podkolzin goes high, and a 2nd team wants a D man, and someone really likes Zegras... maybe we fluke out. I think hes the right piece for us.

Fast skater, size, great shot, good playmaking, near NHL ready. What would be better?
