2019 Draft Revisited

2019 Redo: Kakko or Zegras?

Zegras is a great prospect and I would love to see him on this team but he is massively overrated on the main boards.

Byfield is still the highest ceiling player from that draft. Rangers never are picking high enough to get a potential 1C, so maybe they should have went for the home run swing; especially after getting Kakko the previous year. Completely a hindsight statement but food for thought. Stutzle is fine but he is probably another winger and it’s not shocking that he was closer to the NHL. In hindsight I don’t think you can take a wing at 1 unless they blow away the field and/or it’s an Ovechkin type

Thats because Zegras has hid in the minor leagues instead of also just scoring 0.35 points per game like Kakko has (or worse). They are taking the unknown of hope rather than what they think from simply looking at stats is disappointment.

But Kakko is due to break out and also be a stud defender.

I appreciate that it’s somewhat meaningful but not very much. A huge percentage of the main boards just loves needling the Rangers (and the Leafs). And another chunk of them just look at stats. I admit I’m no zegras aficionado but I think Kakko is going to turn the proverbial corner scoring-wise this season and we already know he a very tough guy to play against in general. I think it’s going to be an awesome year for KK. He’s going to turn a lot of heads.

Byfield could have the lowest floor, certainly of the big three.

I would still draft Kakko. If we had that knowledge the thing to do would be to let go of Kreider (or rather trade him at the deadline), then try to go for a center via trade or FA. The problem is not drafting too many wingers because they were BPA, the problem is signing vets for big contracts when they are about to become 3rd line wingers like Kreider will now and what Buch maybe was due if both Kakko and Kravtsov break through.

Kakko wasnt totally ready for NHL so people have been a bit down whereas zegras excelled everywhere so he kept the 'potential' but if kakk played something like college and the WJC last years he would have destroyed these kids... Also the pp1 usage will make a difference in point, zegras will be spoon fed top pp minutes where with kakko theres lots of competition and we are almost talking PK instead for now.

I don't buy that he's the highest ceiling player, or even higher ceiling than Stutzle. He certainly isn't more than Lafreniere.
