LOL could be times have changed, all I know is I had the chance to play in the BCHL.....and didn't take it....ended up tearing my knee, but if I got the chance to play in it, couldn't have been that good at the time lol,

I've always thought the OPJHL and the AJHL were a step above the BC league...I guess it depends on how you rank them, those rankings seem to be by how many higher commitments, NCAA etc, than how many turn into NHL caliber players etc,

I view taking Newhook at #5 is about the same as Coyotes taking Wheeler at #5......one helluva chance, that didn't pan out for them compared to other teams.

This isn’t the 80’s, when you played, GBH. j/k

BCHL is really good.

Wheeler didn’t work for the Yotes’ but, I think we can agree that he turned out to be a heck of a pro.

Turris was also drafted 3rd overall out of the BCHL and he was the consensus 3rd overall pick.

I still have honest reservations about the league as well as Newhook, but from a pure stat watching perspective there's a lot to like.

Benn came out of the BCHL as well, yeah?

Honestly aside from Benn it seems like scouts have evaluated those guys pretty well lately, with Makar, Turris etc looking like good picks at their spots. So I wouldn't jump ahead for Newhook, take him where he's rated closer to 10.

Lisa Dillman had a long article in the athletic about Ryan Johnson, Craig Johnsson’s kid who is draft eligible this year. She made it sound like he could be someone available when the Kings are picking in the late first round or second round. And they’ve interviewed him as well, so maybe that’s how our first from TO gets used.

Interesting article from Dallas' scouting of Benn: Scouting: How Jamie Benn Became a Dallas Star

Benn is one of the top young NHL players now, but five years ago, nobody was predicting he’d be where he is today. The 17-year-old left wing was putting up some big numbers for Victoria during the 2006-07 season, but he wasn’t creating much of a ruckus on the radar of those scouting young talent for the NHL draft.

The BCHL, a Junior ‘A’ league, is a level below and isn’t as heavily scouted as the Canada’s Major Junior hockey leagues – the Ontario Hockey League, Western Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League – which produces a majority of draft picks each year, including 46 percent of the players drafted by NHL teams in 2007.

Playing in Victoria didn’t help – as you just don’t hop in your car and drive to Victoria, which is on Vancouver Island.

“You have to take a ferry or an airplane to get to where he played in junior,” Holland said. “The Victoria Royals weren’t in the Western Hockey League at the time and it was a process to get over there. You lost a day-and-a-half of travel because of the ferry. Lots of scouts decided to go see the (WHL’s) Vancouver Giants or the Seattle Thunderbirds.”

Adding to Benn’s low profile that year was that he did not get invited to play at two events where he might have caught the attention of several scouts. One was the Junior ‘A’ Challenge, a tournament featuring top Junior ‘A’ players from Canada and other countries. The other was then called the CJAHL Top Prospects game, which featured top Junior ‘A’ players from around Canada'.

Reminds me a little bit of how nobody say Pavel Datsyuk because it was a pain to get flights to his Russian club's games. Funny story about how Detroit's scout went back to watch him again and he got paranoid when he saw a couple other teams' scouts on the same flight. If I recall correctly, the engine caught fire before takeoff or something, and the flight was canceled.

And I seem to recall Benn wasn't in particularly great shape. Benn originally was going to go to NCAA to play hockey and baseball, so that's why he ended up in the BCHL instead of the WHL. There were some vague statements that teams were worried that Benn didn't have full mental commitment to playing hockey.

US looks hot and cold against Russia. Askarov has been Russia's best player again, but in spite of the shot advantage, Russia's defending the US very well.

Hughes loses a battle behind his own net on the powerplay leading to a shorthanded goal. Cam York coasted by the eventual goal scorer trying to block the pass. Never been high on him, as he does WAY too much puck watching, and this time his lack of awareness cost the US.

Caufield is ridiculous. I wouldn’t let his size dissuade me. Just seems to be in the right place at the right time with a wicked short

Knight was playing well up until that second goal against; he seems to be reliable to let a stoppable one in almost every game.

He plays for our local USHL team and I watched him live in a playoff game about 2 weeks ago. He's a great skater with excellent poise and has good hockey sense as he made the safe play a lot. He was on the 2nd PP unit and played quite a bit. They were able to shut down Bobby Brink that night.

I really dont get the Hughes hype; now I have seen him at least 10 times, he looks good vs bad opponents but when he gets pressured he is lost; its like he thinks he is still much better than everybody else like he was in junior but he really isnt.
Caufield on the other hand; damn this kid, I dont know, would he be a reach at 5......

Wow, Sweden vs Russia for gold.

Canada vs USA for bronze.

Didn’t see that coming.

*2020 class seems deeper than this year.

Caulfield at 5 will make Blake look very smart In some years... or very dumb

Blake is going to have to go against his scouts to take Caufield.

Everyone knows Yannetti would prefer one of the 6'4 forwards that will be there. That is still my biggest fear with this draft, Blake still has Wormtongue talking into his ear.

Some team is going to take Caufield higher than anyone expects. We're talking about the best goalscorer the USDP has ever had.

I wouldn't be upset at all if the Kings reach and take him at 5. It's not really that risky IMO.

Caufield has really shot up like a canon the past year.

If there is anyone being taken at a higher position than all the mock drafts the scouts have been obsessing over, it's Caufield.

While decisions shouldn't be made solely on one tournament, I find my list changing quite a bit from these tourney performances.

Kings should take him at 5 if hes there. He doesn't need to have a physical advantage to score goals in the NHL. He is going to find open space and get that extremely diverse shot off.

I am hoping for one of Caufield or Turcotte.

Wish the Kings had a piece they could use to move up and get both, they are going to school together. Let them play 2 years at Wisconsin and then join the Kings for the 2021 playoffs :)

Byram is really good.

Turcotte and Krebs have skills and intangibles.

I wouldn’t cry over Caufield if LA takes him.

Newhook and Zigras are slick.

Cozens and Dach are a bit meh for me at this point.

Broberg will rise now too.

How do you have it right now ?

I have a top 50 list, but a lot of players are left off because while I have seen them in game, I haven't really focused/keyed in on them, so some names may be missing.

But right now, my top 10 is:
Hughes
Kakko
Turcotte
Byram
Dach
Krebs
Caufield
Cozens
Boldy
Podkolzin

Boldy is bouncing up and down on my list. I actually had him at 5 this morning but after watching the US game as well as reflecting on some others, I wasn't sure if I felt good having him that high.

He's a force when he's on, but has been quieter during higher stakes games.
