Sodergran is under contract in Sweden this coming season. He will not be in ONT. Likely a bottom six, PK guy if he ever makes the NHL.

I like having the kids develop overseas , usually they end up as way better players for it . Something Blake does differently than Lombardi who always said gotta get them over soon as possible . But track record was always who develops there is better player for it. Agreed he will be a solid bottom 6 player I said middle 6 because I’m hoping there’s some boom potential there’s but a safe pick to be a bottom 6 pker and contribute to the team offensively and defensively

Really like the Doyle pick. Good value there.

I always like to look at prospects age when evaluating them. A younger player always has it tougher, so if they're still doing well that says something about them. Doyle is extremely young. Won't be 18 for two more months! He also has a lot of upside left. He's 6ft but only 168lbs.

Was ranked 102nd overall by Future Considerations and 40th among NA skaters by CSS.

Just catching up here is as my kid had her birthday party and I dozed off after I got home.

Looks like the scouting staff did a good job overall. I like they went for some potential home run types.

If they can get just one of the kids outside of Round 2 to pan out, that’s a win.

Same goes for Kaliyev or Fagemo. Just need one of the two to work.

Happy with both first round selections.

Onto the rest of the off-season.

Was prepared for a 'meh' draft, but the opposite happened. Pretty stoked about what Blake did today, this could go down as one of our best drafts in a while. This and 2017 could really set this team up for the future if development goes well.

I really like AlexT and thin he will be a really good 2nd line center and future C of the Kings. A young Dustin Brown of a center with more compete and grit. imo.

I think we wasted a 1st round pick on Bjornfont. He likely would have dropped into the 2nd round and if he didn't there are other equally available options that would have been there. He is a poor mans Jake Muzzin which is a very good and valuable thing but not a 22 overall value of a guy.

Happy he is in our system and sure hope to be proven wrong on his upside but it is what it is today.

I would give us a solid B if there were such a ranking system. Turcotte is an exceptionally solid player so he gets an A and I would rank Bjornfot in the C area.

Our 2nd round is much more intriguing. Kaliyaev is such a solid O player and has a good compete. Fagemo is a player that I really like a ton and he could be the steal of the draft if things go right. I give our second round an A- and maybe even a straight up A.

Is Turcotte our best 1st round selection since Schenn?

Well, Vilardi was considered a huge steal at the time even though he’s fizzled out with injuries. Also, Schenn at one point was considered the best prospect in the world. Even on draft day he had a ton of hype, more than Turcotte, IMO.

In terms of raw talent on draft day, I would say our top picks over the past 11 years are:

1. Doughty
2. Schenn
3. Turcotte
4. Vilardi
5. Kempe
6. Kupari
7. Bjornfot
8. Pearson
9. Forbort
10. Teubert

Doughty even on draft day was considered a bonafide star prospect who was 100% NHL ready.

#2-4 is almost interchangeable. Schenn, Vilardi, and Turcotte are all similarly skilled bluechip forwards with the same pedigrees.

#5-7 is also pretty interchangeable. After #4, there is a clear drop off to this tier. I would rate Kempe, Kupari, and Bjornfot as similarly viewed prospects with similarly viewed European pedigrees.

Pearson, Forbort, and Teubert are our stinkers. Even though Pearson overachieved during his first couple years in the league, at the time of his draft he was considered a fringe first rounder.

Bjornfort was McKeen’s #19 ranked prospect. He was ranked higher than Harley, Heinola, Johnson, Johannsen and Robertson. McKeens isn’t some slob publication either.

The Kings got 3 guys in their top 25 including Kaliyev. Anybody unhappy with the Bjornfort pick needs to do more digging on him. He never would have been there at #33 with the way Dmen we’re flying off the board.

Huh? Kaliyev will never be there at 33. Jones had him at #11. Anyone who thinks that he will be there at 33 hasn't done there homework. Just saying. ;)

I said Bjornfort would not have been there at #33. I never said anything about Kaliyev other than he was a top 25 guy in their ranking. That was a homerun pick.

Bjornfort was a need and they had to grab a guy at some point so I could see why they picked him there.

I just thought the comments that Blake screwed up the draft at that pick in the moment we’re ridiculous. People were calling the guy Hickey part 2 and another Forbort. That is just not accurate at all and it basically meant that those people did zero research on Bjornfort.

The bust potential is higher for guys like Broberg being picked that high than Bjornfort who may not be as sexy but will skate a lot of shifts effectively in the NHL and doesn’t play risky. Smart player and a leader. Guys like Broberg are expected to be #1-2 guys when picked that high and anything less is a disappointment.

Kings have probably done better than any team in Round 2 , the last several years:

2015 43rd Cernak
2016 51st Clague
2017 41st Anderson-Dolan
2018 51st Thomas
2019 33rd Kaliyev
2019 50th Fagemo

Then, also consider the Kings have 2 of Toronto's #2 picks:

2016 57th Grundstrom
2018 52nd Durzi

That's pretty stellar. Time will tell. But like every pick. Too bad Cernak was traded,

Except all the reaching for players at the end of the first was grabbing dmen (at least seemed that way to me). The dominos may have caused Johnson to be available as the Kings second, but Bjornfot wouldn’r have been I don’t think.

Lee was a good value pick at #188. He was #103 in McKeen’s. That’s a mid 4th rounder. Spence was #106.

Parik was #147. I thought he went too high but he was trending up and is a bigger goalie.

I like both 2nd round picks and they both play their off wing, something I really like in goal scorers. Also, I just realised Kaliyev is still only 17 so he has plenty of scope to work on his weaknesses. He could end up being the steal of the draft.

However you look at things you would have to agree that our pipeline is looking significantly improved.

ISS had Bjornfot at 33 so did hockey news. They usually have done their homework but that said I do tons of homework and I simply have a different opinion. Time will tell and we all get to have our opinions. I think that is the takeaway here but that is my opinion too.

Los Angeles Kings: A

(ESPN NHL Draft Grades)

Favorite pick: Arthur Kaliyev
Just look at the first three picks the Kings made. Alex Turcotte looks like a top-six talent for their future. Tobias Bjornfot has some limited offensive upside, but is an incredibly poised and mature defender who should challenge for minutes in a couple of years. And the Kings were fortunate enough to have the second-best goal scorer in the draft slide to them in the second round with Kaliyev. Complaints about the consistency of his effort contributed to him dropping all the way to Day 2, but let's not forget Kaliyev scored 51 goals last season and is fantastic when shooting off the pass. Not too shabby for the Kings.

Samuel Fagemo was a second-year eligible who really come on strong this season. Lukas Parik is a really solid goaltending prospect with great size and athleticism. Jordan Spence at No. 95 gives some really nice value as a defenseman who can get the puck up ice quickly. Andre Lee looks like a really sneaky smart pick in the seventh after an excellent postseason for USHL champion Sioux Falls this season. There were a lot of potential home runs here.

Draft Selections For The Kings

ROUND, PICK PLAYER POS. TEAM (LEAGUE)
1-5 Alex Turcotte C USA U18 (NTDP)
1-22 Tobias Bjornfot D Djurgarden Jr. (Sweden Jr.)
2-33 Arthur Kaliyev RW Hamilton (OHL)
2-50 Samuel Fagemo LW Frolunda (Sweden)
3-87 Lukas Parik G Liberec Jr. (Czech Jr.)
4-95 Jordan Spence D Moncton (QMJHL)
4-119 Kim Nousiainen D Kalpa Jr. (Finland Jr.)
6-157 Braden Doyle D Lawrence Academy (High-MA)
7-188 Andre Lee LW Sioux Falls (USHL)

Only time will tell whether any of these kids will pan out or not. Again it's a crapshoot we'll never know who's going to be a stud or dud. Now of course I'm excited about some of the kids we picked, but as long as this year don't become like the '92, '96 and even the '99 draft years. Talk about three of the worst drafts of all time my goodness.
