I think defense is:

Vlasic-Burns
Dillon-EK
Simek-Heed

DeSimone, Middleton

Ryan is gone.

Lefties move up and down depending on who is clicking with who.

Also I assume Dell and Melker or Goodrow are gone.

Kane-Hertl-FA, trade or Doug hopes Checkhovich also makes the team
Meier-Couture-Labanc
Sorensen-Joe-Chlemevski
Melker-Suomela-Radil

See how this team plays and add as needed.

Simek was better with Burns than Vlasic was, but Vlasic eats a lot of minutes, so it's kind of puts us in a pickle (haha).

I tend to prefer, if I were the coach:

Simek - Burns
Vlasic - EK
Dillon - Heed

I think that was true during the year — and of course we didn’t get to see the wonder of playoff Simek — but Vlasic and Burns were amazing in the playoffs, shutting down top competition. Add that to the fact that Simek is coming back from a serious knee injury, I think those will at least be the starting defensive pairings.

Looking at them... that’s gotta be one of, if not the best defensive group in the NHL. Especially if Simek keeps playing the way he did and Vlasix continues where he left off in the playoffs.

Erm, I’m tired and forgot Pavs. I do think he’ll be back actually so I think it’ll be something like:

Kane - Hertl - Labanc
Meier - Couture - Pavelski (DO NOT LIKE)
Sorensen - Joe - Chlemevski
Melker - Suomela - Radil

I’d prefer:

Kane - Hertl - Labanc
Meier - Couture - Chlemevski
Sorensen - Pavs - Nyquist
Melker - Joe - Radil

Didn’t check the salary on that so don’t know if it’ll even work. I just think Pavs and Couture or Pavs and Hertl makes for a very slow line.

Who is said top 4 guy? I don’t think Doug puts more money into defense when our offense is going to have holes.

Alexander Edler. Elliotte Friedman said that we would have interest in him if some of our D were gone. Braun is now gone. I believe Dillon will be next.

While that’s a fun idea and would give us an insane defense, we need to re-sign so many forwards, I’m not sure it’d be smart to get rid of Dillon and replace him with a costlier D-man. How much do you think Edler re-signs for?

I honestly think it’s likelier that we bring back Nyquist (or Donskoi, though sounds like he’s leaving)... along with Pavs and co.

I get the impression that talks between him and Vancouver failed because he wanted too much money, should we not prioritize signing Pavs and Jumbo?

How far is Roy away from the big league?
He got passed up by Desimonne and may be passed up by Merkley soon potentially in terms of organizational depth. Injuries really did a number on his trajectory, which sucks because I was so pumped when DW moved up for him at the draft.

Brenden Dillon's minutes dropped by about 1 minute per game in the playoffs. He frequently got benched in critical situations like game 7 OT against Vegas. DeBoer's been here for 4 years now and has repeatedly shown that he doesn't trust Dillon to be a top-4 guy. What makes you think that the Sharks will go into next season with Dillon in a bonafide top-4 role? They won't. And no, Radim Simek won't get that role either. He played 15 soft minutes per game next to Brent Burns last year.

We've heard more reports of the Sharks interest in Edler, an external UFA, then we have heard about the Sharks and their internal UFAs in Nyquist and Pavelski. That should tell you something. Edler would sign here for roughly $5M over 3 years. Maybe a little more. He's well worth it.

Depending on what Pavelski/Jumbo are looking for, you can sign all 3 of those players. But I wouldn't re-sign Pavelski regardless.

From what I've seen, the issue between Edler and Vancouver is term and a NMC, not AAV.

So who do you protect come 2021? I’d only do a 2 year deal with Pavs or Edler. No way I’m handing either more term or a NMC. Maybe we can convince Seattle to take Goodrow lol.

A top-4 of Vlasic, Burns, Edler and Karlsson would be insane. Simek and Heed are both capable of playing bottom pair minutes. If we move Karlsson, Dillion and Dell, we can get Pavelski at 7 and Edler at 5.

Edler is not coming. In fact, I would not expect any more moves on the D. Right now, its just melker and dell on the block, to clear enough space for pavelski to resign and bridge deals for meier and labanc. I would be surprised to see Dillon traded as that would put all the stock in simek, ryan, and maybe heed or a cuda to play nightly and zero depth when the inevitable injury bug hits.

I think dougie is largely done other than dropping MK and AD. Then meier will take a 2 year 8M bridge. Labanc will take a 1 year 2-3M bridge. Pavs will take a longer term, lower AAV deal to keep him under 7M per. Ryan comes back for 1 yr, under 1M. and 2-3 roster spots open up for rookies.

that should pretty much do it...

7F: Pavs, Cooch, Meier, hertl, kane, Labanc, ???
3D: karlsson, Burns, Vlasic
1G: Jones

Much depends on who steps up this year, but they can expose goodrow or someone like that. They have few long term deals, so lots of flexibility for the draft....

How far is Roy away from the big league?

I know Jeremy Roy was a highly rated prospect at the draft, but that was a long time ago.

Roy was a scratch all throughout the AHL playoffs, if that tells you anything. At this rate a more valid question to me is if Thomas Gregoire is the next guy to pass him on the AHL depth chart.

The athletic did a piece yesterday showing what it would look like today for each team. I don’t agree with their picks but i’d consider doing 8-1 depending on Simek and if he continues to improve the way he did.

Cooch, Hertl, Meier, Labanc
EK65, Burns, Vlasic, Simek,
Jones

I’d actually try to convince them to take Jones and attach a pick or two to avoid them taking Kane if we have a suitable replacement waiting in the wings at a fraction of the cost.

I’m hesitant to rely too much on Simek. He was fantastic in limited time but that was such a small sample size.
