So far Toffoli is showing he’s more engaged, which is what the Kings needed out of him. He needs to be a productive player in order for him to get anything substantial. If he is a 15-goal winger hovering around 30 or so points, would any of you give up prime assets for that? He’s going to be considered a fall back, Plan B or Plan C option for teams who miss out on their prime trade deadline targets.
Not to mention the 0 playoff goals since 2014.
Everything with Toffoli is going to be context. Hayes got a 1st, but he was also a C, going to a team doing anything it could to win today. A lot of the picks listed were in future years. Maybe 1 or even 2 years later, which generally decreases the value of those picks. It's usually not a 2nd and 4th in the same draft. Depending on if the picks are conditional.
It's all wait and see with him. There's nothing he does really well. Hagelin, a contender can put him on the 4th line, he can PK, no problem. Toffoli can't do that. If he's not in an offensive situation, what does he give you? Not hitting, not speed. He's not even a goal scoring specialist. He PK's some, but how much are you giving up for that? Is a 3rd and conditional 6th a year later good?
I don't doubt he'll go somewhere, for something, but when it comes to hoped for returns, I keep those expectations low until shown otherwise. At least when talking about marginal talents. But yeah, like we're all saying, he must score this year. Even if it means a few extra wins. The Kings sit 5th worst, and Toffoli is on pace for 27 goals, so, close to best of both worlds at the moment.
