Good effort by Russia, but the lack of organization, teaching and strategy is becoming more and more glaring at the WJC. The 3rd US goal is a classic case in point. An American crosses the red line and dumps the puck in, but the Russian defensemen do not chase the puck or try to slow the American forward in pursuit, who walks in alone and fires a shot at Sukhachyov, who is already on his knees and out of position to stop the high shot. All the good work the team had done in the period has gone for nothing.
The team has been in a downward trend the last 2 years and it looks worse for next year. Maltsev is a good personification of the Russian decline. He is big, fast, a good stickhandler, but looks as if it were the first time he had ever laced on skates. He has no idea what to do or where to go, so when he gets put under pressure, he starts making mistakes and creating opportunities for the opposing team. Unless there is a complete reorganization of the youth program, the lack of talent and knowledge is becoming more pronounced.
