There are no shootouts in playoff hockey.

Even though the US won, I hated that it ends that way. No championship should be decided like that.

Olympic hockey will always be a cheesy affair for me until they do away with the shootout--especially in the elimination round. I understand the time constraints. But I think it is bogus. They could also start playing hockey on day 1-2 of the olympics rather than day 4-5. Might have a little more room for the games to go longer. And how about 40-60 minutes of OT before considering the skills competition? Ten minutes is way too short even with the time constraints. I try to watch and enjoy but it just too often ends in a shootout because the teams are so evenly matched.

Just finished watching the game and doing so without having known the result prior to. I have a well documented hatred for deciding a team game via shootout in any circumstance (just can`t accept it) but what a terrific hockey game. I really wish other countries would catch up to make this tournament more of a challenge for these two teams though. Congrats team USA and congrats team Canada, great game
I don’t like shootouts but really thought it was the only chance Canada had to win the game, they were absolutely terrible in that overtime period. Not sure if they were just tired or what, but they just didn’t seem to have a clue of how to play on the 4 on 4 .I can’t remember one decent scoring chance bye the Canadians ,if that was the coaches strategy, she should be fired.

Former Bruin Marco Sturm could parlay Olympic success into NHL gig - The Boston Globe

GANGNEUNG, South Korea — Marco Sturm wants to coach in the NHL.
He’s having quite the audition coaching Germany at the Olympics.

Sturm has the underdog Germans in the semifinals, where he faces heavily favored Canada on Friday. At just 39, Sturm is the biggest reason Germany has exceeded expectations at the Olympics. He said he is constantly improving along with his team.

‘‘As a coach — and especially me, because I’m very young and (in) only my third year coaching — I learned so much,’’ Sturm said Thursday. ‘‘It only helps in tournaments and it always helps playing against top teams also. ... You learn sometimes from your mistakes and on the other side what do you do good and what you think helps the team to be successful.’’

Said it to my wife last night...or rather early this morning, but every single one of the US women's games, but especially last night's, were 100x more entertaining than the garbage the men put on the ice outside of Donato.

Somewhere poor Ashley Wagner is laughing to herself, and thanking her agent that she signed all the endorsement deals before the Olympics.

She would have performed much better under Olympic pressure than they 3 young women the US sent

The Olympics showed why the United States simply can’t skate with the stars - The Boston Globe

The Globe's John Powers who has been covering the sport since the 70's hints things could get worse for the US.

The Russians, who finished 1-2 for the first time at the Games with Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedeva, didn’t miss a thing. They rarely do. They’re so far ahead of the Americans now that that the US federation may have to borrow a rocket booster from NASA.

The problem isn’t just that the Motherland has been pushing the envelope since before Sochi. It’s that the US began falling behind three decades ago when the federation voted against scrapping compulsory figures, a 19th-century relic that had made the sport expensive and exclusive.

For eight years after the rest of the world had moved on the Americans still had a separate figures competition for seniors and juniors at the national championships. And when the old 6.0 scoring system was scrapped as part of the post-Skategate reforms, the US was slow to adapt to a format that rewarded risk-taking and rigor.

“For many, many years our younger champions were winning without any of the skills needed to be elite skaters,” said Tom Zakrajsek, who coaches Nagasu. “They didn’t have the triple-triples or the full cadre of triples.”

I'm honestly torn. Been grumpy and detached from this tourney because I *really* hate that they kept the NHLers home. As a result I'm really not that emotionally invested. But I do know that a Germany win here almost guarantees Sturm gets a job in the NHL .I want that!
