The whole Finnish 1st line + defensive pair leads the tournament in plus/minus. Safe to say it's the best line in the tournament by far.

This Finnish team has quite talented and confident players. Gold medal in the realm of possibilities? Haven't watched any games of the Swedes, Canadians or yanks, though. Welp, they are always strong contenders, so - the Finns might end up fourth of the bunch. Not bad.
A medal isn t impossible! ;)!

Finland with a very strong performance vs Russia. They was the better team incl. better individual capabilities.

I hated Merkley's limp backhand into the middle earlier too.
Merkley looks a bit like Quinn Hughes... his skating, and his hands and sometimes his vision but he is far more inconsistent, makes strange decisions at times, seems to get himself in trouble, and his mind seems to vacate his head

Laughed at that.

Describes Leafs Jake Gardiner too. As a Leafs fan, I actually like him but shake my head at him sometimes.

Wasn't this supposed to be a weak U18 year for Slovakia?
Until this tournament they have only beaten Belarus, Hungary 2x and Switzerland (?) I believe. Otherwise loss after loss. Safe to they got hot at the right time, especially goal scoring, which has been the biggest problem of that team.
Cajkovic and Knazko look like legit prospects. Wonder whether this tournament gets Okuliar drafted.

Finns were simply dominant on 5vs5 especially in second and third periods. I had no doubt that they'll turn things around although Russia lead 2-4. With addition of Rasmus Kupari I see a possible gold medal team in Finland.

How does the bracket go in the playoffs (after quarters)?

Please don't talk medals yet.
Yes Finland was really good versus Russia in 5 vs 5 game.

But it's still too early say for sure how far this Finnish U18 team goes in these U18 WJC's.
Finland has been very undisciplined team in all 3 games Finland has taken too much idiotic penalties.
And if we can't stay out of penalty box in quarterfinals it'll kill our medal dreams sooner than later.

Yes it's good for Finland Rasmus Kupari is coming to play U18's.
But lets see how Czech Republic game goes and lets think quarterfinals after that.

If / when all goes perfect Finland has medal chance but Sweden, Canada and Russia are also medal candidates.

And even USA can win this tournament and that USA has had problems in their preliminary round games doesn't mean nothing when quarterfinals starts next Thursday. USA is still number one favorite win this years U18 WJC gold

Are you sure ALL of the penalties were idiotic? You make it sound like all of them were. I mean, I know there were a lot of bad ones, maybe idiotic too but, you know there can be some good penalties? It is never a good thing to get a penalty, but if it prevents a sure goal/a very good chance, that can't be said as idiotic.

But I agree they shouldn't take that many penalties if they want to go far in this tournament.

Pity, Kravtsov and Shafigullin aren't 2 weeks younger...

Several eligible players missing, including Svechnikov and Khovanov, but that is no excuse for the really weak showing the Russian team is making. I'm sure Tretiak will be even more embarrassed at his own incompetence by the fact that these games are in the Urals in front of a home Russian crowd. I would say get rid of Tretiak, but I'm not sure that there is anyone in Russia who actually cares enough about hockey to do what is needed to make the situation better. The way that they have played so far, they are doing a good impression of a team that is prepared for elimination in the QF's.

Thought Canada looked just fine today, even with Smith's strange mistakes - some players who looked dominant against Belarus looked less so today, while others who seemed "meh" against Belarus shone today (McShane).

To have scored so much without more than 1 pp goal says a lot about about strength/depth of the lines, and weakness of the pp.

Each line should be able to both produce and defend, which makes for a tough team to beat, even if the USA has a torrid offense.

Predictions about the Sweden game? Who do you think will stand out on Tuesday for Canada? I'm thinking Veleno and the Veleno-Noel-McBain line, since they were frozen out against Swiss - they're due!

Looks to me like the best US forwards are 2019 draft picks Hughes and Turcotte.

Turcotte has gotten completely shafted with Appert's coaching. He's carrying two undraftable players on the third line, and still looks good. I don't know why Appert refuses to promote him.

He's also a very good 200 foot center, yet he's playing as a winger. I don't understand it. He's right up there with Wise, Farabee, Pivonka for defensive ability, yet he gets no PK time, and doesn't get to play center. Its bad coaching.
