There was so much whinging the 12 months prior about management never going for the boom-or-bust type, too.

I made several posts before the draft on the topic: Why are -- nobody -- calling out Wahlstrom's flaws? The kid has a great shot, he is good in other areas too, but he also has several big red flag issues. I mean sure, if we passed on the best sniper in years, besides Laine, who was flawless in all other areas then I would have had a big problem with it too (why on earth would that kid fall to 9? That is another issue).

I think it just comes down to the fact that the so called experts can watch Wahlstrom play a ton without spotting what was right in front of them. They obviously have no clue what they are talking about. And people put a lot of faith into what these guys are saying.

Wasn't there reports also that we LOVED Wahlström tremendously and like had him in our top 5? I wouldn't at all be surprised if we just weren't interested in Wahlstrom with a high 1st. I also posted that before that draft, is this guy even a guy that our crew would consider? There was so much conflicting info.

Wahlstrom just is not some god gifted talent who we would be tremendously fortunate if he dropped to us like it was described. He is a sniper, but he is immobile on his skates. A good 210-215 lbs on a 6'1 body. I would have big concerns about his play without the puck. He is responsible and even smart with his positioning, but against better teams he can just end up standing there when players are flying around him and his head is spinning.

I definitely think we were interested in Wahlstrom, remember, Clark said we thought Kravtsov was the 2nd best forward in this draft (I agree and have said this before we drafted him that I do think Kravtsov has potential to be the 2nd best forward out of this draft) Doesn’t mean we didn’t like Wahlstrom. On a side note though, that means Rangers had Kravtsov above Zadina (someone who this board was obsessed with) imagine the outrage if Zadina was still on board and we picked Kravtsov.

Cherepanov was a stud; a legit top 5 talent in that draft.

The drop was due to the uncertainty that existed with drafting Russian forwards at the time — with Cherepanov’s draft coming during, or close to, the peak of those concerns.

But all arrows pointed to him wanting to be a Ranger and play in the NHL in short order.

Beyond the tragedy of his death, I have no doubt he would’ve been a star forward.

I really hate to bring that up but weren't there some questions about his play after he was drafted? I thought he might have regressed. Obviously I'm not trying to slander him, I just thought I remembered that.

No the main questions about his play surrounded his performance at the u-18's after looking great at the WJC's in his draft year.

It's a major shame because he passed just as soon as his game looked like it was really going to take off.

He was truly the elite talent that this team has been lacking in a skater for years. This October will be the 10th anniversary of his passing.

He would have turned 30 in January of this upcoming season.

His condition was not screened for at the time. It is now even though its a controversial topic amongst the medical community.

Brooks mentioned BEFORE the draft that the Rangers were interested in Wahlstrom and Clarke said that they considered Kravtsov as the second best forward AFTER they made the pick. At the time of Brooks’ report I’m pretty sure we had a discussion that this inside info was a misinformation by the front office. Otherwise I see no reason to reveal this and I’m pretty sure Brooks was (unknowingly) used for this purpose before.

Even ignoring entry level contract considerations, I’m hoping that he plays so well to get an invite to the main Russia NT camp for 2019 world championship.
But is`t that huge of a difference to Kravtsov compare to Leafs AUSTON MATTHEWS, of course there are some difference due to position, but I don`t think Auston is miles ahead compare to skill level and potential to be honest.

My question is if he is good enough now to play NHL - why wait 2 years so he can build muscles? And he has much better coaches and training instruments here in NY in comparison.

The outrage would have been warranted. I think people, for better or worse, are better educated about the mechanics of drafting nowadays, probably because of fantasy sports.

If the Rangers had those guys ranked like that, and both Zadina and Kravtsov make it to your draft spot, I think you do whatever you need to do to get BOTH because of the value that is presenting itself. Understand it takes two to tango, though.

He has one year left in the KHL. I doubt he will come over as soon as his KHL contract is up. We might not have much hockey left at that point. Hopefully Hartford will, but if Kravtsov has a chance to play in the WC, let him do that and then come over for camp in 2019. There's no rush. Let him develop. We don't need him right now and wasting years of his ELC isn't going to help. He'll be here next year and if his current play is any indication, he'll make the team out of camp.
