The departure of Rieder is good for like 5 spots in the standings.

My god was that guy trash. 3 moments of brilliance, hundreds of minutes of human turnover and defensive liability.
I agree he looked out of sorts in LA, but I could see him working in Edmonton. Loads of speed.

I'm not trying to be unreasonably optimistic. But if Kovalchuk and Vilardi do good what more do the Kings need besides a little bit more from the bottom 6 and carter? That's not asking for too much....

A bubble team with those additions is an underestimateling both players imo. We can take the division if all goes well. Every team is a bubble team with injuries to top players. Don't know many teams who will be fine with injuries to their best players.

Kings on paper are a much better team this year with both Vilardi and Kovalchuk in the line up. If they play to potential of course. That will significantly balance the line up and naturally allow other players to play with better players down the line up. If our defense isn't ass and Quick has a consistently good season. Playoff lock imo and cup chances are there.

Hope I'm not out to lunch though. I saw glimpses of brilliance with this team until the offense fell apart with Carter being gone and being bad when he returned. A healthy Carter Kovalchuk and Vilardi should really be a dangerous addition.

If both Kovalchuk and Vilardi are healthy/productive, we really only need Kempe to continue his progression. He fills a key role as that 3C behind Kopitar and Carter. And if Vilardi really is as advertised, he and Kempe will be competing for icetime.

Personally, I don’t think Kempe will ever progress into a bonafide NHL centerman. I think his true future is on the wing as a speedy transition threat. So in saying that, we need someone like Vilardi to step in to play those 3C minutes and win face offs.

For sure. And apparently he's got chemistry with Draisaitl. He has the tools, just not much awareness it seems, and he couldnt get in on the forecheck here despite his speed. I don't particularly hate the guy, was just a swing and a miss.

I'm optimistic about Kovalchuk because it has a positive trickle-down effect, hopefully pushing Iafallo to the 3rd line where he, Kempe and Lewis can form a real solid 3rd line that can spend time in the offensive zone. If he can produce like Lucic did in his one year here, it will do wonders for this team.

the movement of players to their correct lines is one of the biggest plusses to me. not only adding kovalchuk but getting a healthy carter means a lot of guys are suddenly being slotted into positions they can succeed in and then other players don't have to carry them

so long as stevens just places kovalchuk on kopitar's wing and doesn't f*** with it, there's no reason this roster can't succeed

iafallo lewis kempe is a very very solid 3rd line if you think about it, especially if kempe can take another step forward

Those Kingston jerseys are pretty sweet.

They remind me of the bumble bees.

Anyone else miss the dumpster diving deals? Here's one from the past...

That 2001 off-season was quite upsetting for many Kings fans. They low balled Luc Robitaille, who led the team in goals, and let him and Stu Grimson go as free agents, and in the first week of free agency they go out and sign Steve Heinze, Randy Robitaille and Ken Belanger. Those were some frustrating times.

The dark days indeed. With Tim Lieweke as GM, sorry I meant Dave Taylor, I wasn't surprised.

I actually think Iafallo might be a bit of a darkhorse to be the improved guy too. I think by the end of last year a lot of people had written him off as a forechecking plug but there was some serious puck control and offensive talent there (he's got a whip of a shot). I think he has a real shot at being a 20-20 guy this year.

Man I want that feeling back , didn't think after 12 I would enjoy winning as much but that run was so exhausting can't wait for it to happen again GO KINGS GO

that 2nd OT was completely nuts

voynov robbing nash, quick and hank both stoning guys

Heinze wouldn't have been bad as an additional signing to play on the second line behind Luc but as a replacement along with Valicevic and Randy Robitaille...yuck.

And as great and necessary as the addition of Jason Allison was to the roster, the Kings effectively killed their team depth due to their ineptitude in handling the Luc Robitaille contract.

During the awesome playoff run in 2001, the Kings iced this lineup:

Deadmarsh-Stumpel-Palffy
Emerson-Smolinski-Murray
Robitaille-Belanger-Laperriere
Buchberger-Kelly-Thomas/Grimson

A year later, they significantly improve the top line, but the rest of the roster suffers.

Deadmarsh-Allison-Palffy
Ronning-Smolinski-Heinze
Eloranta-Belanger-Laperriere
Buchberger-Chartrand-Emerson

As we all know, Cliff Ronning and Steve Heinze turned out to be duds. Like you said Reaper, Heinze would have been a good fit had he been looked as an upgrade over Nelson Emerson, not Luc Robitaille who was coming off a season with 37 goals and 88 points.

And of course the Kings would lose 2/3 of the top line and everything goes to hell in a hand basket for a very long time.

I might be in the minority but the 2014 was a lot more satisfying to me than 2012. The lack of adversity made it a bit anti climactic.
While it was fun, I still think 2014 was a lot more rewarding

I look back on 2014 as the validation of 2012 Cup. If the Kings would have only won one, people would have called it a fluke. That second one meant a lot. And we finally could shut up the Ucks fans about winning their Cup earlier in their history. 2 Cups > 1 Cup.
