That boy has a ton of growing up to do.

He says he want to be a leader, this was not what leaders do.

Grow up kid.

in your own words, he's still a boy so what is all the fuss about? I agree that it might have been classier if he gave the medal to one of the staff (provided they don't receive medals) but again, he's a flipping teenager. Give him some time in NY and around Lundqvist, he'll class up real quick, no worries about that.

He gets no passes from me due to his age.

He was named captain, act like one.

No excuses.

I think the key disagreement we have here is there is a distinct difference between dropping the medal in the bin on the way out of the arena, and hurling it into the stands in front of cameras.

indeed we disagree because i think putting the medal in a bin (trash bin I assume? who has a regular bin?) is more disrespectful than giving it to a fan. It's not like he arbitrarily threw it. It went to a guy with a Tre Cronor.

Players and athletes sell championship rings and olympic medals all the time. I'd rather a player toss his loser medal into the stands immediately after the game than wait 40 years and put it on ebay so he can pay rent

Ok, here it is: most of you will get wiser with age (some wise even as youngsters). I think I got wiser myself as I’m at a life midpoint or about. And that will be a point.

What Lias did was definitely something that earns disapproval. Especially from a captain of National team representing his teammates and a nation.

However, the public outcry of these righteous voices that never made a mistake when they were kids is ridiculous!!! Leave the kid alone - surely as emotions subside he has or soon will realize what this medal represents and how this pain and frustration will lead to bigger and better things. There will be a place for it in his life and a regret of what he did with the medal - its memento. Another life lesson with both.

Again just want outsiders to be sensible about what they say about an 18-year old kid.

It was a disrespectful thing to do by a kid who is very passionate about the game. It's good to see how much he cares, but he handled it poorly. It's certainly not the end of the world, but too often people confuse "leadership" with "I want them to handle it how I would have handled it! Be mad like me!"

I’m not explicitly disagreeing with people who find it slightly immature or disrespectful. I just don’t have a problem with a young, emotional player being slightly disrespectful. He was NOT overtly disrespectful TO anyone. He put his emotion on display and it lacked the desired decorum. I’m fine with that.

To me, there are different kinds of leadership. Some will recall Captain Qualude Drury. During his reign, the Callahan/Dubinsky/Anisimov kid line kind of rose and took the helm. It brought us into our most competitive window in a long time. Eventually we needed a trade to push us over the top. We went with Captain Cally and shipped off Dubinsky. Dubinsky had a fire however that we always seem to lack. Now we have Captain McD. I will be welcome to have a kid with some fire like Lias on the roster. He reminds me a little bit of Dubinsky (obviously not as much of an instigator/dirty player but a guy who had some fire and will show it and speak his mind). For me, that kind of leader is needed. Different people respond to different kinds of leadership. I think we’ve had the same kind of vanilla leadership for a long time. A little fire and brimstone could be nice.

I'll elaborate on my disrespectful comment.

There are a lot of people that have a hand in putting this team together. They worked hard to get these players prepared and ready for this tournament. The trainers specifically for Lias himself with the shoulder issue.

Not everyone is going to win gold. And if you believe that you put your best effort forward, losing is nothing to be ashamed of or mad about.

It's perfectly fine to be disappointed, but as the captain of that team, there is a time and place to show that disappointment. That was not a spur of the moment decision. He thought about that up to the point he did it and still went ahead and did it anyway. It shows poor sportsmanship on his part.

Definitely NOT something a leader does. Not a leader I'd have any respect for.

That boy has a ton of growing up to do.

He says he want to be a leader, this was not what leaders do.

Grow up kid.

He's an adult, not a kid. He can make his own decisions, and shouldn't have that type of "grow up kid" patronization thrown at him.

A couple of folks said it better than me. I do not agree with the medal throwing. Whether you want to compare this medal as a nothing piece of metal versus the unique Conn Smythe trophy is irrelevant. You just don't toss something that was JUST given to you, no matter how worthless you personally feel about it. It was worth something in the giver's eyes. Look at this way: Hey grandma, thanks for the ugly sweater. I'm in kind of a foul mood, though, and everyone ought to know I'm pissed off. So I'll just toss this thing to a stranger who I think would want it more than me. Because I don't want it. But thanks again, grandma.

Do you think this kind of act would gain approval by your close peers much less anyone and does this kind of an act not look to be disrespectful?

Why? In what way will he or the NYR be hurt from this attention?

No, the organization won't implode over it. But "Rangers prospect" will be mentioned in the same breath as "Lias Andersson" in articles.

Bad allegory - how big of an emotional roller coaster you grandma just got your through? Or you’re trying to say that Lias is a spoiled brat because that would be a description of a kid in your example?

How about a crime of passion allegory then? No, Lias didn't kill anyone as he raged over his defeat. But in crime of passion cases, does the passion excuse the crime?

I am not saying Lias is criminal. I am not even saying Lias is a spoiled brat. Yes, he is passionate. But when this kid is being touted as being mature and plays an older man's type of game for his age, tossing a medal into the crowd would not be a clip I would roll out from Lias' file folder in support of that assessment.

Is it the end of the world? No, it isn't. I'm not calling him classless, I'm not comparing him to Sean Avery, nor am I outraged over his action. To me, it was clearly a sign of disrespect, it wasn't a proper thing to do, and it was something he could have handled better.

I'm sure he'll have a conversation with a coach or parent or whoever it is he looks up to about it. Doesn't change the fact he did it. Also doesn't change the fact that this young man wants nothing more then to win. This is a good thing for our franchise. Hockey should still be played with emotions and this guy has a bunch of em.

I’m not going to argue on the should he/shouldn’t he have side, but as far as comments on his maturity level; that has always been with regards to the way he plays, not his personality. He had always been known as a fiery competitor but the maturity aspect was with regards to how he thinks the game, makes the smart plays, doesn’t force things, etc. This isn’t to say he has ever been labeled as immature. Just that he is young, competitive and hates losing and all of this is known.

So when one of ours does it, it's competitive fire. But when a non Ranger does it, he's a toolbag. Not singling anyone here, but there's a slice of double standard being served. I personally don't like the tossing of the medal. It looks petulant in my eyes. Rant over.

Messier is the biggest toolbag in hockey history and most people here want him to coach the team and every player to be like him.

I wish we had 4-5 more like him on our roster . You can never have enough of guys that hate to lose .
