Like I said, it's just bad optics. This thread is now lit, as is the sports media. I don't think he and the organization need the attention, but if Lias felt compelled to tell the world that he's not happy, then mission accomplished. At best, it shows selfishness, according to what he said about how he sees it as a loser's medal. Then he's saying that he played with a team of losers.
A) Doubt he cared about optics if he was bawling his eyes out like 10 seconds after he tossed the medal
B) He obviously believed in his team so much that he was as crushed as he was

I love it.

I do not care “how it looked”, whether he/his current team/his future team “need the attention”, or what anyone thinks of it.

He clearly doesn’t think he played on a team of losers. He thinks his team lost a tight game with questionable calls that they probably should have won and were robbed. And as the captain of that team, he can’t stand it. I’m fine with it. It was an emotional moment and it shows how competitive he is.

Had he not shaken the hands of his opponents or made disparaging remarks or anything of that nature I would have disliked it. In this case though, the raw show of emotion and obvious fire and ferocity was refreshing, to me.

Why? In what way will he or the NYR be hurt from this attention?

I'm still trying to get over how someone here compared to him Sean Avery because of this. Lias got compared to a man who is a definition of a loser and the furthest from a team player. You just can't make this up.

i will never understand why we even give out silver and bronze medals in team sports. especially knockout tournaments. you play to win the game. why is 2nd and 3rd rewarded with a trophy?

The people saying he's classless, are idiots, plain ans simple! Is he a sore loser? Maybe. But, I'll take a sore loser over a player that will just take losing like it didn't matter, and just follow the herd, any day of the week. So, so happy this kid is ours and will be playing the the NHL very soon!

Show me one athlete who takes losing that way. One does not have to act like 6 years old to show he is devastated by the loss.

I was surprised by all the emotion on the Sweden team. They all took it very hard. I can't remember seeing a team in any sport get so upset.

Andresson later elaborated on this motivation. It turns out he earned a silver medal in the under-18 world championships, too, after losing to Finland in 2016. "I haven't checked it in two years," said Andersson. "I lost last time. I didn't need another."

this makes perfect sense to me. "Not another one" and the previous one is just collecting dust somewhere. Imagine if you had a collection of "So you came in second place" ribbons. How many of those do you need? It's also only the WJC and not like a world cup or Olympics medal. I just hope he threw it to a Swedish fan.

The guy he threw it to was wearing a Rochester Americans jersey on top of a USA jersey on top of a Sweden jersey, so who knows what's going on with that guy

Good for him. He's a competitor and he's pissed. **** "optics" and all that. "Optics" has no impact on anything. Kid was the captain, he felt responsible, and didn't care for some ****ty second place medal. Good on you, kid. He just gained a notch of respect in my book.

I guess we'll disagree on this one.

If he wants to make a statement/call his teammates out in the locker room, give the medal to a kid off the ice, good for him. I'm all for it.

This comes off more as showboating and making the scene about him instead of the winners. Maybe that's not how he intended it, but it's how it is.

Would you be okay if a loser in the SCFinals won the Conn Smythe and then smashed it on the ground right in front of Pierre and the camera? It just seems showy and the kind of thing that won't make you friends around the league.

Great! I can get behind a guy who genuinely likes the Swedish team, albeit perhaps for fashion reasons. He's gonna have a great story if his Swedish friends ever come to visit him again or vice versa. I honestly like the fire in his belly. As to the emotional Swedish team, they were undefeated up to that point and while they were able to outperform all their previous opponents, getting just one goal against the Canadians has to feel like a giant let down. And they also lost to the Canadians. With an arena full of their mostly obnoxious fans. Ironic for a country known for their good manners ;)

sorry that is a terrible analogy. There is only one Conn Smythe trophy and it is respected as such. It's the opposite of showy to me. He's not doing it for attention (maybe that's what you'd do?) he's doing it out of pure disgust and emotional frustration. That's likely his last WJC so no more chance to win it all for him. Maybe when you've won two silver medals you'll have a better perspective?

Oh, don't be so defensive. It's alright for kids to make mistakes and get critiqued for it. This isn't about me or you, (LA is already a much better hockey player than I ever was) its about the kids reputation.

Even if it was out of frustration and not for show (Why throw it in the crowd rather than the bench area if not to make a scene) then the kid needs to be more conscious of his surroundings and the message he sends to young kids watching the game.

Teaching people that it's not okay to lose with dignity is how you get people like Roy Moore not conceding elections.

Oh, and a silver medal is a respected award in the same way the Conn Smythe is. It has a much longer history, too.

Not even close to being comparable.

Conn Smythe is a trophy given to an individual player for exceptional performance. Not a 1st loser medal. Try again

He obviously wouldn’t smash the Conn Smyth but what if he skated out when he was announced as the winner, quickly shook hands and took his stupid photo and then skated away without touching the trophy and showed no regard for it. That’s much more similar to how this felt, for me, and I wouldn’t have any problem with that display either. I’d applaud it, and I had no problem with Lias either.

I'll elaborate on my disrespectful comment.

There are a lot of people that have a hand in putting this team together. They worked hard to get these players prepared and ready for this tournament. The trainers specifically for Lias himself with the shoulder issue.

Not everyone is going to win gold. And if you believe that you put your best effort forward, losing is nothing to be ashamed of or mad about.

It's perfectly fine to be disappointed, but as the captain of that team, there is a time and place to show that disappointment. That was not a spur of the moment decision. He thought about that up to the point he did it and still went ahead and did it anyway. It shows poor sportsmanship on his part.

Definitely NOT something a leader does. Not a leader I'd have any respect for.

That boy has a ton of growing up to do.

He says he want to be a leader, this was not what leaders do.

Grow up kid.

I think the key disagreement we have here is there is a distinct difference between dropping the medal in the bin on the way out of the arena, and hurling it into the stands in front of cameras.
