2017 Football Thread III: End of an Eli

The consensus is that it'll be a QB. Either Darnold or Rosen depending on who Cle takes. Rosen is head and shoulders above Darnold but has concussion issues. Rosen does have personality red flags for some but imo he's fine.

I'd take Mayfield over Darnold as well but I'm sure Mara won't.

As long as we don't take Allen from Wyoming we have a shot.

Kiper came out with first mock today. I take them with a grain of salt, but its always fun to read.

He had:

1) Allen (Cleveland)
2) Rosen (Giants)
3) Chubb (Indy)
4) Barkley (Cleveland)
5) Darnold (Denver)
6) Fitzpatrick (Jets)

I prefer Rosen, but he is not at all “head and shoulders” above Darnold. I will say that his personality flags are all pre-UCLA, apparently. So that doesn’t scare me.

Rosen is my guy, but it’s not at all a stretch to say Darnold is a better prospect.

w/r/t Mayfield, he’s going to have to have a ridiculous Senior Bowl and Combine to get into consideration. On the big stage, his prime flaws were really magnified. He’s a super fun player who can make a ton of throws, but his mental game is such a huge question mark. I don’t take lining up in shotgun as a negative, but he’s so far removed from even a modern NFL-style QB that the work that it will take to get him to NFL speed should really worry teams.

He’s sort of a lottery ticket. I see him as a late first round pick for a team who already has a QB. Patriots, Saints, etc.

Darnold is Jameis. Weird throwing motion. Tons of turnovers. Teammates love him. Football guy.

Rosen is a surgeon behind a bad OL. Pro-ready day one. Throws w anticipation better than anyone in the draft. His brain may bruise easily is his only real negative. I think he's definitely above

Tons of turnovers? Don't pay attention to raw turnover stats in college, dude. I'd say you should pay attention to how the picks are thrown versus how many picks actually exist.

Which one of these was Darnold and which was Matt Ryan, Peyton Manning, and Drew Brees (these are all the final seasons of each player)?

Idk what you see in Darnold, Jon, but I just can’t shake the USC qb stigma. I think he’s good, but way overrated.

In that regard, I’d like to see the Giants not grab Rosen in the draft. But since I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Giants, I think them having a young stud like Rosen is great for football. Part of me is also a masochist and wants to see how my Iggles can handle play against that much offensive firepower.

It also means the Cowboys would have the worst qb in the division, which makes me happy. Right, @darko? :sarcasm:

Meh, I said the same thing re: Winston and the FSU stigma and he's a legitimate NFL player (although not what he was billed as, IMO).

Rosen is my guy. He's been my guy for months, really. But I really do like Darnold. He's mobile, he's smart, he reads the field, and he can throw into very tight windows. He was also under an insane amount of duress this year and handled it well. Darnold reminds me a lot of Tony Romo.

Frankly, he's no worse than Eli Manning with his ill-advised throws. I could put up with something like that as long as the player brings mobility and better short/mid accuracy (which he does) than Manning has had the last 4-5 years or so.

If you want to see Darnold under duress, just look at the Ohio State game. He was running all over the place and still somehow put up over 300 yards, all while being nearly killed on every play. He wouldn't have to get used to our offensive line!

I don't like Darnold's throwing motion, it seems to me that it takes forever for him to throw the ball. AS you, I like Rosen better, but I'm scared with his body holding up in the NFL. 2 concussion and a shoulder surgey(?) in college is not a good sign.

I don't need to look at the stats when I watch the guy play. He reminds me a ton of Eli,obv more athletic. Has some real wtf throws. Will throw the yolo ball. Makes some great plays too.

I don't hate him. I just don't think he's close to Rosen.

I think we can't go wrong with either. Or Allen, really. So I'm fine with all three. It's, weirdly enough, exactly how I felt in 2004 . . . It's really quite strange. It feels like fate.

With that said, we will end up drafting Barkley at 2 and I'll throw a remote through my TV.
I'm really cheering for the Browns go full nuts and draft Barkley with the first pick, eliminate the Barkley pic for us, that I feel that is a real possibility right now.

I could totally see them doing that and it could be a good move for them. Take Barkley at 1 and get a QB at 4. Only thing that would screw them is Indy trading out with the Jets or Denver.

Even though, they can get Allen or Mayfield for sure, Rosen won't play for them, if they are not in love with Darnold it's a good move. Actually, thinking about it now, it's the best move for them. Barkley and a QB, that would be some drafting by the Browns.

1. Dak
2. Rosen
3. Wentz
4. Cousins

I like Baker Mayfield way more than Josh Allen.

I see nothing that Mayfield does that Allen doesn't do at a much taller height and with much better pocket presence. Mayfield and Allen have probably the two highest ceilings in the draft, but Mayfield's floor is all the way down to China while Allen's floor is probably Blake Bortles.

Knowing them, they will draft Allen at 1 and some bullshit at 4.

The other move I could see them doing is Allen at 1, trade down from 4 to the Jets or whomever else needs the QB that fell. Get another second rounder and maybe even a 1 next year. And then take Nelson at that spot.

If we draft Josh Allen I'll be checked out until Grandpa Gettleman is gone. If Josh Allen was black they'd be telling him to move positions.
