Team USA = boyz fresh outa college + NHL journeymen won bronze at WHC...so anything is possible

Still...IF Young Guns made final ....AGAINST ANYBODY...it would be a Huge Cinderella Story! Ergo, anything but a Farce...

That's assuming players don't treat the World Cup like an all-star weekend.

This reminds me of Spengler Cup thread...and laments from fans of KHL clubs, that they treated it like a holiday, that they didn't take tourney seriously...blah blah

Excuses are for LOSERS...

players from teams that wind up making the World Cup finals -- in a tourney featuring such an incredible collection of talent --- presumably will have taken this competition very seriously!

6 of the teams will be A Teams ( or very nearly so ) , plus sporting their countries colors. Mark my words...the hockey WILL BE fast and furious...

The same kind excuses are being made by canadians and americans when it comes to WHC.

1. Canada
2. USA, Sweden, Russia, in that order
3. Team Europe
4. Team North America U24
5. Finland
6. The Czechs

I had to move Finland one spot higher above the Czechs. The Czech team has probably better forwards (Krejci, Hudler, Plekanec, Vrbata, Voracek, Hanzal, Frolik, Hertl, Palat, Fleischmann), but Finland has very good goaltending, and great team-game that is proven on international level, tournament after tournament.

I can imagine Finland beating the NA team, but the only position (even though an important one) Finland is better at is goaltending. McDavid, MacKinnon, Monahan, Gaudreau, Galchenyuk, Saad, Couturier, Scheifele, Eichel, Larkin....that's undoubtedly a better offensive team.

But to those that don't like my ranking - don't worry. When was the last time something ended exactly as predicted on paper

It looks like the Czechs should be behind Finland and North America?

I took the lack of experience into consideration concerning "the Young guns".
As for Finland I don't count goalie depth as high as 1st goalie and skaters in such a short tourney.
Good point though.

I don't really agree with the ranking, but I agree that Mrazek probobly is better than the three "small hockey guys" you gave Czech for goaltending. So I can see what you mean, maybe

Paper strength is not nearly as relevant in short tournaments as in league play with the long seasons: in a matter of couple of weeks you need to gel your players into a disciplined unit, get them playing well together, get them motivated in the right way and, for god's sakes, get your goalie hot as soon as possible.

I think there is a country in Northern Europe that knows this rather well...

I see it this way as well although after Canada the rankings will be very tight and I could see an "upset" very easily.

for all of those lamenting u23 not having a starting #1 NH goalie or Dman look again...just like it was predicted and easy to forecast.

Canada, USA and NHL will profit from this, develop their youth and chest pound while all the other countries will be used for show and wear out their top players before the season. This " world" cup is ridiculous..

World Cup will be a show tournament, but it's Ok. Dont really care how we fare in this.

Yeah, how we fare in this tournament has no effect on the status of Finnish hockey. That's why I don't care what kind ofa team we send to the tournament, though I'd prefer if some stars or potential star players were left out so they could train for the season normally.

Interesting point you bring up are the hockey federations of other countries planning to bring backup rosters like in the whc? That is one form of protest but still doesn't sound that likely.

A tournament like this can only have status in Canada lol... bringing in U23 teams and a mixed Europ team, cant recall anyone i know have had anything positive to say about this joke of a tournament.

Yeah, it's not a real tournament, but it can be a fun tournament, like a better version of the all stars weekend.

I guess that kind of excludes the U23 and Europe team?

Playing for your league club who pays your salary or playing for your national team are very different to these U23 and Europe joke teams. They won't have a team identity, can't play with similar heart and thus will resemble mostly an all-star team or other exhibition team. So this will leave six serious teams. In 2004 the hockey was good, but I think the general attitude of players towards this will be a bit less serious now purely because of the way NHL has now decided to screw this up.

I'm interested to see how many particularly Swiss and Slovakians will simply say no thanks and skip the tournament.

I have decided that I won't directly finance this farce by buying on-demand or tv packages, so I hope it is only a partial success and the joke teams will be scrapped.

I think many will do something similar but the NHL has already said it's not going to continue the all star teams format in 2020. I doubt this tournament will make too much money though, market stigma is against it.

Definitively said? I think it was more like "maybe" (in 2020 a qualification tournament).

If this gong show makes money, it would make no sense from the organizers' POV to suddenly veer back into having a more traditional tournament - after all, this particular format helps them save costs. No need to pay royalties to two extra national federations or other leagues for using their players in any significant amount.

So, the best (and I might say only) way to ensure they actually stay good to their word and make this format a "one-time thing", is not to pour a single dime into this. Just taking their somewhat tentative word about it is incredibly naive.
