Considering we can use NHLers only, maybe something like this:

Ovechkin - Kuznetsov - Kucherov
Kulemin - Malkin - Tarasenko
Panarin - Datsyuk - Nichushkin
Plotnikov - Anisimov - Yakupov

Markov - Orlov
Zaitsev (will be in NHL by 2016) - Kulikov
Emelin - Zadorov
Medvedev - Tyutin

Varlamov
Bobrovsky
Vasilevsky

I always wondered why Datsyuk, with his overwhelming talents, produced relatively little when compared to other Russian stars.

How about:

Artemi Panarin-Pavel Datsyuk-Vladimir Tarasenko
Alex Ovechkin-Evgeni Malkin-Evgeni Kuznetsov
Nikolay Kulemin-Artem Anisimov-Valeri Nichushkin
Nikita Kucherov-Alexander Burmistrov-Nail Yakupov

Emelin, Kulikov, Zaitsev, Chudinov, Voynov maybe, dunno who all other Russian d-men sucks.

I would give a chance to young goalies like Andrej Vasilevsky, Sorokin and Shestorkin.
Varlamov and Bobrovsky fail at NT tournaments.

Can't put Malkin and Ovechkin on the same line, that's almost cast in stone by now :D.

Ovechkin - Kuznetsov - Radulov
Kovalchuk - Malkin - Tarasenko
Panarin - Datsyuk - Kucherov
Kulemin - Anisimov - Nichushkin

Emelin - Markov
Orlov - Kulikov
Medvedev - Tyutin

Varlamov
Bobrovsky
Vasilevsky

Kulemin - Anisimov - Nichushkin

Emelin - Markov

Varlamov
Bobrovsky

Almost my point of view as well, except I thought Kovy - Dats - Radu worked well together on the past Olympics and it doesn't make sense to split up that line. And our roster lacks some RHD D's. In that case:

Panarin - Malkin - Tarasenko
Ovechkin - Kuznetsov - Kucherov
Kovalchuk - Datsyuk - Radulov
Kulemin - Anisimov - Nichushkin

Emelin - Markov
Orlov - Kulikov
Medvedev - Zaitsev

Varlamov
Bobrovsky
Vasilevsky

In short I like that roster much more than 2014 Sochi edition, but defence is still our red flag. :help:

Forwards and goaltending will be our strengths. But the defense... goodness. What a drop-off.

I also noticed that no one includes Voynov in their projected rosters. Is it because he might not be allowed entry into the US for the tournament?

I believe it's more because he isn't exactly tearing it up in KHL so far (which is not surprising after a year out of hockey actually). It seems more strange to me that Marchenko is getting no love here, he has been very good for Detroit so far.

He is a very slow skater, which exaggerates an already existent problem on the defense, and he just can't play defense at all. Take a look at Finland's second goal in the QF at the Sochi Olympics. That illustrates why they don't want to have to rely on him!

IMO, assuming that any active KHL players will play in the World Cup is shaky at best. Can't imagine why the KHL would want to participate, and Russia could easily fill out a team from existing NHL players.

I think players like Nikita Nikitin and Voynov can be replaced with http://mhl.khl.ru/en/players/20896/

Absolutely match their qualities.

He has time to get better. He played a big role on the Kings' defense. And he also has a Stanley Cup champion's ring.

Agreed on Marchenko. He is very underrated.

Speed is important, but it's not everything. If Russia can find a good replacement for the Stanley Cup champ, then great. But we simply don't have much depth on defense.

His role on the LA Kings was to contribute offensively. He handles the puck very well and is an excellent passer. But defensively, he really hurt Russia in the Olympics, and the lack of defensive presence, as exemplified by the 2015 WC Gold Medal Game is a primary problem for Russia.

Don't know about defense but here are my forward lines:

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Tarasenko
Panarin-Malkin-Kucherov
Nichushkin-Datsyuk-Namestnikov
Yakupov-Anisimov-Kulemin

I actually would consider adding Burmistrov over one of the young,1-dimensional forwards.

Yakupov, specifically, isn't ready for a tournament like this. He needs the puck to be effective and you get a fair share of turnovers when that happens.

With defensive minded players like Anisimov and Kulemin Yakupov could be very effective. I still believe in his development, even as he has a tough time in Edmonton.

Yakupov should not be anywhere close to this team. Garbage player with a tiny IQ.

Besides someone like Kalinin would be perfectly good on a checking line.

People are also forgetting that there will be an influx of Russians to the NHL against next summer, which will include the likes of Buchnevich and Gusev. Probably Zaitsev too.

So what is your alternative? There are just about 30 Russian players in the NHL and it seems that the KHL will not participate in the World Cup.
