Even if he were Canadian, there is 0 chance he would make the team. McDavid actually has an argument, since he has shown what he can do in the NHL, and even then I only think he makes the team as an extra forward, or as an injury replacement.

A player with zero NHL games is not making the deepest roster in the world. You might have an argument if he has a great rookie season, but given the timing, and the fact he was just drafted, it wouldn't happen.

Okay, but he's still better than Giroux.

Okay, but he's still better than Giroux.

Don't kid yourself. He is absolutely not better, currently, than Giroux. Not only is he not better, but Canada would be able to know they can trust Giroux at both ends of the ice.

Just keep the hype train rolling.

Matthews isn't even the best player on the u23 team. But he'd somehow make the hardest team to make in the tournament?

just ignore it haha

im assuming he is just joking around haha

hes trying to work everyone up!!

Think Giroux may be a bit banged up...Didn't he get hit from behind and driven into the end boards in game one?

How did St. Louis get this kid in the 3rd round? What a steal.

Passed over his first draft eligible year and wasn't ranked at either draft. From St Albert and played in Fort Mac

Hitchcock probably had to do with finding him.

I like Matthews and think he's played well, but he isn't making Team Canada at this point in his young career.

He'll never make Team Canada.

He's American.

Quit trying to derail the hype train!

It's astounding how over-the-top the general HF consensus in in regards to prospects. It's not a team-specific problem, either. I understand hype and excitement, but you can almost pick a thread at random and see a declaration about how a prospect with 0 NHL games played is better than a current star player.

Sure, sure...next u'll be telling us he learned the game, playing sandlot Hockey...in Arizona ;)

To be fair, Matthews didn't 'learn his game' in Arizona. He wasn't even born there. He just resides there, from 13+ he's been away from Arizona learning hockey in Michigan? (I believe) with the USHL. Even earlier than that, he used to travel to certain hockey hotbeds for tournaments. Although he resides in Arizona, he definitely didn't become a superstar from playing there... and no one expected him to.

Matthews travelled a lot more than other kids to play hockey because he couldn't get the competition he needed in Arizona, a good defying the obstacle story, but when the media says 'We'll definitely see much more talent coming from Arizona because of him', yeah I doubt that. It's a huge obstacle having to go on 6 hour road trips to play in a semi-competitive tournament to improve your game. It's unfortunate, but Arizona does not have the resources to train elite hockey players at this time.

He did actually play a lot of hockey in Arizona... It's a small hockey community and basically every kid in the state around his age has played with or against him. He did play a lot of hockey outside of Arizona as well, as you say, but a lot of his development happened at home. Look up James Mirtle's article on his upbringing for more info. (In fact I think it may be what you're basing your comment on, but you're wrong/exaggerating.) He also went to the USNTDP in his 16yo season, which is normal for the program.

Are you kidding me? He didn't learn hockey here in AZ? This is such a **** post reaching for any way to try to act like only certain areas can produce hockey talent.

Every travel hockey player travels to tournaments, that's how tournaments work. Have you ever played travel hockey? I'd guess no as you seem to have zero knowledge of how amateur hockey works.

Every player travels to the competition. Ever. Single. One. This is such basic knowledge to have when discussing hockey. You are so wrong it's infuriating and the need to push your agenda is pathetic. I hope your embarrassed by this post.

Here I recall a gigantic article about him mainly playing on a tiny rink against much older players in Arizona.. Was that a lie? He even got scouted off... Arizona Bobcats, right?

You're right. He is absolutely a product of Arizona. This Divine guy is just spewing nonsense to backup his odd agenda. As if Mattews isn't as good because he came from AZ, so he's trying to distance him from there for whatever reason.

Me too.

I hope McDavid eliminates Canada in the final, prompting the ACC crowd to shower the ice with debris in protest.

I want to see Bettman proclaim the greatest hockey nation in the world to be "NA players born after Oct 1, 1992." What a complete farce.

You think people at the ACC are going to throw debris at the team with Matthews and Rielly? People havnt been as nationalist as you seem to think since the 1970s. Most people I know generally put their NHL team loyaltys first.

If North America wins, the ACC will get loud.
