I think by 2018 Nathan Mackinnon and Connor Mcdavid will have both firmly forced their way into the conversation for Team Canada. Probably at RW and LW respectively.

I'd be very surprised if they'd actually have to have a discussion about McDavid at that point. I think he'll be a no-brainer.

Oh, this is going to look GREAT on the NHL. The better McDavid does the more egg the NHL gets on their face over this. Imagine, Canada may not be able to pick the Art Ross winner for their team. Won't the NHL look so stupid then? Ekblad in my mind is already pretty close to a lock cinch for the "real" Team Canada so they'll look dumb that they aren't allowed to pick a Norris candidate. I can't wait to watch this irrelevant tournament break up because of that stupid format that is going to smack in the face of the NHL.

If McDavid is good enough in a few months to be a clear Team Canada level player and Canada goes on to lose this tournament......... uh oh.

One thing I don't like about this is that they should've allowed both Canada and US to pick their best players first. I don't really think Canada would take out more than 1 or 2 players, and the US more than 3 and even that is doubtful imo. The U24 team would still be strong

But, at least, even though I would rather watch McDavid for Canada for sure, it's gonna make the U24 team really interesting to watch competing against Finland, with players of that caliber.

Stamkos Crosby Bergeron
Benn Getzlaf Perry
Hall Toews Carter
Mackinnon Tavares McDavid
Perry Nash

Keith Weber
Vlasic Doughty
Brodie Pietrangelo
Subban

Price
Luongo

:sarcasm:

McDavid-Tavares-MacKinnon would be awesome to watch..so much talent.

Canada will be robbed of Ekblad, MacKinnon and maybe McDavid.

3 good deserving coaches. If Babcock wins again, he's for sure in at 2018. Much easier to project a roster with Babcock rather than a McLellan or even Quenneville. Go with what works, I like it.

The only thing I like about this tournament is that it an provide useful reps for both players and coaches. It will be good to get Quenneville involved. Vigneault would be good too.

I'm surprised by Babcock's continuing involvement; the man has nothing left to prove. Quenneville is a good selection, and I also would have preferred Vigneault over Julien. With McLellan coaching The Young'ns, at least the possible successors to Babcock will be involved in the 2016.

Based on this though, I guess we can probably expect to see Babcock back in 2018 too :dunno:

Nothing left to prove, no! but he has to be out there at every opportunity working with the games elite, hoping beyond hope that he can convince 1-2 or perhaps 3 of them that salvaging the sinking market that is the Toronto Maple Leafs is a worthy and noble cause. The situation in Toronto is reaching the breaking point...and as much as we like to laugh at the TMLers, if that franchise/market sinks any lower...it's not good for the overall health of the league.

at least that would be my take if I were MLSE and paying him that ridiculous salary. get out there and recruit, you don't get a day off.

I had assumed that Babcock would think that way, but TSN has been reporting for a while that he was interested in continuing with Canada. While he has nothing left to prove as pretty much Canada's most accomplished international coach, Babcock has enjoyed the exposure that international hockey can provide more than anyone else has. He had nothing of note happen with Detroit since 2009, but his name in the media (which certainly helped him get his Toronto salary) still loomed large. Primarily due to coaching the two Olympic teams. In 2014 in particular Babcock seemed to be the star media attraction on that team.

This looks like a good coaching staff. Babcock is a very good coach. Quenneville is a very good coach as well, and it will be interesting to see how he does as an assistant. Canada has relied heavily on the assistants to implement systems, and I'm not sure if that is Quenneville's strength. Better to find out now than later. I expect that he will be replacing Ruff as coach of the defencemen and PP. Julien is a very good coach, in my opinion, and I liked his work with the forwards in 2014. Interesting to see if they dust Hitchcock off again to take on the defensive specialist role. He's certainly qualified. Tippett is as well.

The coach I'm most interested in for the future is McLellan, but he's in a very weird situation that may actually benefit Canada by allowing HC to audition a coach while still using the incumbent as well.

Babcock loves the attention. Look at his career. how about when he searched out Marner's parents at the draft. why not meet them in the privacy of the team's room like every other coach? no television cameras... he's such a swell guy

 excited and happy for Quenneville  FINALLY :) I've always wanted to see him behind Team Canada. Such a charismatic guy. He deserves that. What a strong coaching leadership with Babcock.

I believe the word you're looking for is "classy".

Quen or Babcock would have been a good call as coach. Both is fantastic. Alot of these players will have played for Babs before so the integration should be relatively seamless. Which is key in fast and furious tournaments like these.

TC is going to need it. Since you seem to be so thrilled for this tourney, there are a whole lot of black holes in the Team Canada roster right about now. outside of Price, Subban, Seguin and Benn, there's nobody playing on an elite level. TC is going to need a hell of a lot more than those 4. A lot of injuries and a whole lot of suckage. Ya, I can see a scenario whereby Canada is bounced early from an elimination game and Sweden just steamrolling this tournament in front of a quiet and indifferent ACC crowd of roughly 10,000.

Hopefully I'll be watching another Blue Jays pennant run. :) That was fun.

Only a month into the season. Little early to be worried

Since I have ZERO interest in this gimmicky tournament and I won't be watching it, I'd say I'm not worried at all what the outcome will be, but at this point just stating the obvious.

I'd like to watch that too :)

btw, Perry with a goal finally today. Five seconds before the end of the third to tie the game  And Crosby with one too. Hopefully they'll keep it going.

There are better options the Ekblad. He's a great player but there are a ton of vet D I would take over him.

McDavid is an amazing player. He's been very fun to watch. But he's also got some flaws that come with being an 18 year old kid playing against the best in the world.
Based on how Canadian teams have been built in the past (defense mentality) I'm not so sure he would have been a lock. Same goes for Mackinnon.

Plus I think it gives the U23 team a chance to go on a run which would kind of be horrible yet interesting haha.
