Yeah, I'd easily take Backes on this team if he wanted to come here

There's a thread on the main board that has him looking for a 5 year $30 million deal.

I like his game and would love to have him on the Canes, but I don't want him locked in for more than 3 years, maybe 4. Reports were that he turned down a 3 year $5.5 million per year deal.

Oh well....

That is expensive and longer term than I would like, but that would not be the worst contract in the world if push came to shove.

I'd easily do that. Especially if it's that or Bryan frickin Bickell mentioned in the other thread

Unless the Hawks eat 1/2 the salary and pay us to take him, I can't see RF/PK taking on Bickell.

On Backes. I'd struggle signing a 32 year old center to a high dollar, 6 year contract. Maybe he'll be like Jagr or Marleau and play well into his mid 30s (and 40s for freak of nature Jagr), but it's rare for even 35 year old center's to be still worth that money in this league. Of the top 30 scoring centers in the NHL today, only 2 (Thornton-2nd and Sedin-30th) are older than 32. I realize Backes brings a lot more than scoring to the table, but scoring is what the Canes need and if he loses a step, then it's a disaster.

I'd love to have Backes on this team, but I can't say I'd love him for high dollars and 6 years so for me, it would all depend on the contract. I don't know that he'd want to come here anyhow and if he did, maybe it's a case of beggars (Canes) can't be choosers.

5 not 6 years. Not a big deal but it adds up when a player is getting toward the end of their career. I was saying that 5 years of Backes is way more attractive then 2 years of Bickell if we're talking one for one. I don't think Backes cap hit would impact that much as it has to go somewhere and his leadership would be highly needed

1 not 2 years. ;) Even so, I'm not at all suggesting Bickell.

5 or 6 doesn't change my view. As I said, I would I like a guy like Backes on the team but I'm nervous about his age and signing a 5 or 6 year, high dollar deal so it would all depend on how much he gets. Signing older guys like this to high dollar, long term deals is a risk, plain and simple. If they lose a step, it's a boat anchor regardless of their leadership. Brindy's "leadership" didn't help when he could no longer skate.

If the Canes are able to sign him, I'll be happy about it and worry about the consequences down the road. Like I said, sometimes beggars can't be choosers and the Canes haven't signed a higher profile UFA in ages and IMO, are going to have to at some point to get over the hump. I'd still be very surprised if he chose to come here though as I think other teams that aren't afraid of Salary will offer him what he wants.

I love Matt Cullen, and don't get the opportunity to espouse it often enough. He was only a Hurricane for 3 full seasons: 06 (Cup win), 08 (missed by one point), and 09 (ECF). maeks u think

Cullen is great when he's in the right role. It's when team over pay and over slot him that people sour on him.

Cullen is weird because he's so good at so many different things, you'd think there's no way this guy isn't a star. He can skate like hell, he can win faceoffs, got a killer wrist shot, he can play the point, he plays solid D, he's adaptable to just about any situation. I guess he's just not comfortable being in the spotlight.

Penguins' key to winning the Cup is having a former Cane center their 4th line.

Not really. I think he's just one of those versatile guys who does a lot of things well but isn't great at any of them.

Yeah that's what I've always thought was so cool about him. Put him pretty much anywhere in the lineup and give him a role and he'll make it work. He's a glue guy.

Couldn't imagine being in Letangs position, his wife miscarried today. Thoughts and prayers for his family, after what I've been through these past few days too, hits close to home.
