BPA (probably?)

1. Matthews
2. Chychrun
3. Puljujarviyj

Our needs?

1. Chychrun
2 Matthews
3. Puljijarvi

We really need a potential top pairing guy in our system, but Matthews would be impossible to pass up.

Yep. You can't pass on a talent like Matthews.

Not to mention you have a better chance at getting a top pairing defender in the 2/3rd round since defender prospects can be so hard to predict than getting a premier forward later in the draft.

Mathews if the chance arrives.

I believe we will likely be in the position to get one of the top forwards of draft (Mathews, Pulj, Laine, Sokolov/ any risers...) and will pick one of them

We will then have the ability to use our other 1st rounder and our early 2 rounder on D

Maybe we can even pick up another late 1st with deadline deals

Knowing we are stocked with quality wingers that are working on converting to C makes me confident with picking Matthews. Marner, Kapanen and Nylander all can play wing for sure it's just which one plays best at C. In either case BPA at this point is Matthews but Chych could easily make it interesting come draft time.

Shouldn't we be discussing later round options? Let's talk about 1st round when we get closer to the draft. Right now QMJHL training camp is open and we get to see who is going to be draft-able next year.

That makes more sense given were not sure where the leafs end up (though likely bottom 10).

Goalies.

One has to think they draft a goalie sometime. Bernier is only under contract for 2 seasons, why get cornered?

I would love to get the best goalie in the draft next year. Not with our first pick obviously, but with any pick after that.

Luke Green (D - Saint John) is a name to remember. Looks like a guy we could potentially get in the 25-35 range, assuming we have a pick around there. Such a smart player, and he has great offensive instincts. He's going to be a leader on a powerhouse Sea Dogs team in the coming years. Check him out if you ever get the chance.

you dont draft for need with top 5 picks. the leafs need everything, including centers. if a franchise center is there lou takes it and runs.

Don't think Phaneuf is being moved.

But yeah, we're definitely going to struggle to score, however, we'll play better defense.

He could be a very realistic expansion team pick-up imo

If we take Matthews hypothetically, it enables you to trade a forward like JVR for a defenseman etc.

London has potentially 4 guys who could go in the top 15 this year..

I especially like the Finnish d man.

Looks like a really solid draft year...I mean, i wouldn't say the top 10 is as strong as 2015 but pretty solid top 30 and a lot of quality defenseman and forwards with size+skill. I would definitely love to add a 3rd 1st rounder.

I could see us landing another 1-2 2nds at the deadline, the question then is, would you rather have a 20-30th pick for 2 2nds (with one being pretty low) ?

I think our management made it pretty clear this past draft that we'd prefer to have the two 2nds over a late first. Unless the talent level drops from say, 24 to 33, we're not moving up in that scenario.

Last year was a deeper draft, and I would of rather had 2 2nds as well. This year I don't know which way i'd go. That 1st may be better in this draft.

i think people are way underestimating this team. I see this team from 9-13th in the East rather than dead last in the NHL. However, if we pick 1st you take Mathews (as of right meow) no doubt about it, however, Chychrun might be an absolute stud, could be a stamkos/doughty esque draft.

Who do you see us being better then?

I have the bottom 3 as Leafs, Arizona, and New Jersey.

We MIGHT be better than some of Buffalo, Boston, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Carolina, Colorado, Arizona, Edmonton, and Vancouver.

If the team comes together under Babcock and Bernier has a .92+ year, we could be easily be in the 19-24 range. However, I think we'll trade off a bunch of pieces at the trade deadline, and flounder after that.

The only teams we are arguably better than from that group is New Jersey(retirement age team), Arizona(barely has a team) and maybe one other if we're lucky.

Buffalo has improved this off-season, Edmonton, Carolina doesnt have injuries anymore and Philly has been a treadmill team for a bit now.

Boston might be that wild-card team that drops, as their trades in the off-season were absolutely terrible and set that team back a couple seasons.

Also have to consider that we were a relatively healthy team last year. I know Dion missed 12 games, Kadri missed 9, and Lupul and Polak missed almost 30, but rarely were we missing our top players for long. A significant injury to JVR, Dion, or Bernier would crush us this year

Agreed. Buffalo won't be terrible like last season, still have a brutal D-core though. Edmonton obviously improved big time, Carolina added Wisniewski and Lack, and although Philly didn't make many changes, they have too much talent to finish that low again. I see Philly back in the playoffs this season replacing Ottawa
