Every team is going to have the same problem as the Kings. Look at the Ducks for example.

They absolutely are going to lose a pretty good player. I certainly would take any of those defensmen over McNabb.

The Blues are going to protect Pietro, Bouwmeester, Shattenkirk, and Parayko. Tarasenko, Stastny obviously. That means you have Schwartz, Lehtera, Steen, Berglund, and Perron. Guys that teams are going to want.

The CBJ have to protect Clarkson, Hartnell, Tyutin, and Dubinsky. That's absurd. One of Atkinson or Jenner is going to be available.

Point is, the Kings don't have particularly appetizing players compared to a lot of other teams.

I think the most likely exits are Lewis and Gaborik, in that order. I also don't think LV is going to suck, I don't even think they will finish last in the Pacific. There's going to be some quality guys available.

Looking at your offence, whats the plan? Kopitar and Carter are a solid 1-2 punch but the wingers beyond Toffoli are horrible! Any expectations for a young kid to grab a top 6 spot? I thought Kempe might be that guy but his numbers sure werent where I expected them to be at this past season. Has he regressed? That said, I love Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez and of course Quick on the back end. Good luck this season.

Wells there are a lot of question marks when it comes to wingers. Many are expecting Pearson to break out, many are hoping that Gaborik returns to form and hopefully stays healthy. Brown is a long shot to get back to where he once was. And the thing with Kempe is that he just needs to be more consistent. Probably another year with Ontario and then he'll be ready and may even be a midseason call up. Not many people are worried about Kempe.

If Gaborik has a bad year he probably won't get protected. Any of the young kids could earn the last protected sport (Mersch/Dowd/Shore), if not maybe a forward acquired at the deadline.

Vegas will have a ton of #4 defenseman for trade after the expansion draft.

I don't think there is a chance that Gaborik or Lewis get protected over McNabb. There is no upside left for either of those forwards where there is still lots of upside for McNabb weather most fans see that or not. I see the Kings going with 4 defensemen and 4 forwards on the protected list.

Anaheim is definitely going to lose a great player and so is St. Louis but I don't think St. Louis will protect Stastny or Bouwmeester over Schwartz . Schwartz is a great player who is only going to get better. What a great draft 2010 was for St. Louis

I was always wondering who the Kings would lose in the expansion draft. Trying to think who to protect. But then I was talking to a friend and he set me straight. Who cares who the Kings lose if they can protect all the important guys anyways and still have more space. It's not like they are going to lose Kopitar, Carter, Toffoli, Pearson, Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez or Quick. Everyone else is expendable. Nobody has stepped up to make me want them protected.

Tyutin got bought out.

The Bieksa fiasco is why they have been rumored to move Fowler for a forward, that forward would be a good player that they want to protect (along with Rakell, Silfverberg and the 3 NMCs) and go 7-3-1.

Ducks are going to lose a good player.

Vatanen, Lindholm and Fowler would be the 3 they protect which would leave Despres, Bieska, Manson and Stoner available.

I didn't read the expansion rules on rookies or young players. Manson has a limited number of NHL games played.

They have to protect Bieksa (NMC) which is why Fowler was a popular trade candidate coming into the summer.

A thought I just had on the expansion draft. Las Vegas is gonna take 30 players. But can only have 23 players on their roster. So, 7 players will have to be sent to the AHL and possibly be put through waivers. From my understanding, players who have played 2 years or less of pro hockey (NHL, AHL, ECHL) are automatically protected. So the Vegas is gonna also target prospets in the draft and likely take players who just played their 3rd year of their ELC. If I'm understanding it correctly, then a player like Kempe who will be playing his 2nd pro year this year should be protected. But I do think it's a possibility that it could be a prospect that could be taken from the Kings (as well as other teams) in the expansion draft.

Players STARTING their 2nd year in the pros aren't subject to expansion, unless you're saying that the rule should be otherwise?

Vegas should pick up the best player available from all 30 teams and then make trades.

So then a player like Kempe could be exposed if not protected by the Kings? Since the 2017-18 season would be his 3rd pro year.

Anaheim and St Louis will try the o' traded picks/prospect to entice Las Vegas
to take this player over another they couldn't otherwise protect.

One Winger there is never a question mark about it Kip Winger. Always leave Kip Winger unprotected.

The glory days of hair.

On 2nd thought the Blues might actually be good . Seems like Parayko might be exempt along with Fabbri. If that's the case they'll go with 7 forwards and 3 d . They have great young team and lots of forwards that they will be able to protect

You're not going to protect Jay Bouwmeester, a 13 point and 19 point season back to back means the Blues would be thrilled to get out from under his contract. Signed a ludicrous 5 year 27 million dollar contract in 2013 and he's a Blue until after 2018-2019. With his ability to log heavy minutes this could be the kind of player Vegas targets and nobody would be happier than StLouis. The Vegas team is like another buy out hope for many NHL teams without the retained cap hit. They're gonna do their best to prop up players who have pulled the old Dustin Brown Houdini act after signing a big money deal and pray Vegas takes them cause they're "good in the locker room". Any way you look at it if Vegas took Brown or Gaborik the Kings would be in much better shape financially and back in position to fill the hole at LW.

I think the kings are better set up then most teams.

Expansion is going to help keep LA's window open

the blues seem to love Bouwmeester. He is a good high minute D man. He may not be physical but he is very sound in his own end.

If I'm Vegas, unless there's no other choice, why would I take on the problem contract of another team? They have 30 picks to hit 60% of the cap, about $44m, in the expansion draft. I know they're an expansion team, but while they may not have the best team, there's no reason to lock yourself into bad contracts. Just like any other rebuilding team wouldn't want to do.
