Not sure how McDonald is still ahead of Blackwood at this point. One has been elite and the other average. Barrie allows 33.7 shots per game and are only 9 - 6 because of him.

I agree that Blackwood has been better at this point. But Barrie is a pretty strong club, you are definitely selling them short.

I think Chychrun will be selected. He seems to be playing well, the defensive group is not overly strong this year and I do think politics will help him.

I really don't know why they are keeping Virtanen.

Well, we all know politics has a role at the Hockey Canada selection table over a few jugs of Tim's...but I'll still be surprised if a double underage is added to what is already an underage d-corp. I'll be surprised, but not shocked, if he makes the trip.

besides, what about the Hockey Canada rule of can't play an U20 event until a player plays a U18 event? Or is that a rule which only applied to Mackinnon because a few of the yahoos at HC at the time were not fans.

The policy on undrafted players generally changes from coach to coach. He seems to be playing at a level similar to what Ekblad was, and his political status can't hurt him in HC eyes. I don't think that there is any formal rule regarding participation in U18 events. If it was formally acknowledged then someone like McKenzie would mention it when discussion of a player like Chychrun making the team comes up.

Pretty sure Chychrun gets a pass on that because he was legitimately injured for the u-18's. But I wouldn't be surprised if they do something weird.

The fine folks at HC (previous Admin - chief scouts et al) made quite the deal about it at the time as being a formal rule... MacKinnon can't play the U20 event (which was the 4 game summer series 2012 with 2 games in Yaroslavl 2 games in Halifax.)

McKenzie will repeat or not repeat whatever Hockey Canada tells him or risk losing his preferred journalist insider status.

McDavid probably ready to return around the start of the WJC, hoping the Oilers send him to the WJC as a conditioning stint. Almost certainly won't happen, but after being out so long playing at that level may get him up to speed, and they could be a little ways back by then.

It'll never happen, but I can dream.

That would be fun and a real silver (Golden) lining in this sad piece of news...but ya, it's pure fantasy.

Barzal has to be one of the Top 3 Centers on Team Canada. He already has the pedigree of being top points getter in the under 18 team. Point is a wild card, he can be the Petan of this year's team.

I wouldn't call Point a wildcard. They are counting on him to be one of the guys up front.

Wonder if Ethan Bear gets an invite. 15 points in 15 games so far.

Here is the roster I would like based on the probable availability of actual NHL roster player and Hockey Canada realist behaviour. Everyone available from last year will come back and I think the only NHL roster player who is going to be loaned is Virtanen:

L. Crouse - M. Barzal - M. Marner ... Classic no1 line with high end playmaking and 2-way play
B. Perlini - D. Strome - M. Dal Colle ... The big relatively slow line that should be start in the offensive zone most of the time and can dominate in it
J. Virtanen - B. Point - T. Konecny ... The rushing line with the big shot from the off-wing
N. Aube-Kubel - A. Beauvillier - F. Perron ... Two-way line with high-end motor, not physical as some would like, but more effective on Finnish ice
J. Hawryluk ... seems like a versatile forward

T. Sanheim - A. Carrier ... Good 2-way 19 years old
T. Chabot - J. Roy ... Okay pairing that should be back next year in Tor-Mtl
H. Fleury - J. Hicketts ... Experienced 19 years old pairing
Chychrun ... can go get experience and can replace on both side if needed

This is imo very good team for Canada. Great all around team which would be tough to play against and good for european ice. I also think Roland McKeown deserves a shot on defense.

I'd hope Nolan Patrick gets a long look. Kid is already one of the best defensive players in the WHL. A defensive role on the fourth line or even extra forward would do.

I'd also like to say that for those of you that think were going to be a weak team this year, nuh uh. Point is ripping up the W. Marner is a stud. Mason McDonald is solid in net. Our D core is solid (Sanheim may be one of the best junior age dmen in the world). Barzal is a scoring machine. Dal Colle and Konecny are also top tier offensive players. I think (on paper) we should be favourites.

Do you guys think Chabot will make the team? There doesn't seem to be much talk about him, but he is improving at a scary rate. Could end up being one of the best d-men from his draft class.

Switch Barzal and Strome for chemistry reasons and for contrast. Barzal's great but like I said earlier in this thread, this team lives and dies by Strome.

He has to be the kind of centre Reinhart was last year for us to be successful. Defensively sound and offensively stable enough to let the creative wingers take over. If he can do this, we have a good chance of doing well in the tournament.

Point won't be on the third line. Too offensively skilled.

Here is my best guess at what HC will roll out there.. assuming no one gets sent back from the NHL (or released):

Dal Colle- Strome- Marner
Crouse- Point- Konecny
Perlini- Barzal- Gauthier
Perron- Beauvillier- Hawryluk
Aube-Kubel

I'm beginning to wonder if a kid like Nolan Patrick couldn't find his way onto this team.. while a 2017 prospect, he missed 2016 by 3 days and would only be an under ager and not a double under ager.

Sanheim- Hicketts
Fleury- McKeown
Chabot- Roy
Chychrun

Blackwood
McDonald

Overall I'm not really impressed with this roster.. while they will compete I don't think they are the favourites per se. I know I like the US roster better.. or at least the one I think they should put on the ice.

Tkachuk (97) - Matthews (97) - Bracco (97)
Milano (96) - Schmaltz (96) - Tuch (96)
Connor (97) - White (97) - Roslovic (97)
Dvorak (96) - MacInnis (96) - Boeser (97)
Fischer (97)

Werenski (97) - Carlo (96)
Walman (96) - McAvoy (97)
Krys (98) - Collins (96)
Belpedio (96)

Halverson (96)
Nedeljokic (96)
Opilka (97)

I feel the same way, hopefully we have a goalie advantage because on paper USA looks even or better than us. Imo they are gold medal favorites.

It's not even that I dislike Team Canada, it's just that I feel the Americans have more depth up front. Defensively I'd say it's about a wash, maybe a slight edge to the Canadians and goaltending is probably even but in a short tournament goalies get hot.

As of right now I'd go:

Michael Dal Colle - Dylan Strome - Mitch Marner
Brandon Perlini - Braydon Point - Travis Konecny
Lawson Crouse - Anthony Beauvillier - Mat Barzal
Francis Perron - Nicolas Aube-Kubel - Jayce Hawrlyuk
Julien Gauthier

Travis Sanheim - Joe Hicketts
Haydn Fleury - Noah Juulsen
Thomas Chabot - Roland McKeown
Jakub Chychrun

IMO Chychrun is already better than any of our other defensemen. Not a big fan of Beauvillier or Perlini, but maybe they'll show some improvement in the super series. Agree with the Aube-Kubel inclusion.

I agree with the Chychrun statement, I just don't know how HC will deploy him. I'd run him as a top 4 for sure and probably top 2 defence. But will they..
