Five goals in 12 games as a player thought of more as a two-way player who is strong in all three zones of the ice. Yes, what were the USA coaches thinking? (yes, that is sarcasm).

Good news guys...Sabres prospects have scored the GWG in the gold medal game the last two years. As Borgen is their only prospect in the WJC...USA got this locked down.

I got pretty bored waiting for this team to start so I kept going back to all the discussion over all the players who got "screwed" from this team.

I think it only gets worse for next years team as plenty of 98's and a few 99's are going to make things very interesting for the selection process.

I will put Matthews below, but he is 100% gone for next year, and Tkachuk might not be too far behind him in the NHL.

If you thought Team USA had tough choices to make this year, take a gander below for next year:

....much better depthon defense. the 98's will be relied upon here. I can see one of the young guns in Gildon/Farrance making this team.

offense is just deep as hell again..so much skill and plenty of talent at every year - some highend 99's might sneak on the eval camp like happened this year with some 98's.

USA has no shortage of talent now at forward. the defense is improved with lots more depth and the goaltending is deep as well as all 4 could be starters next year though Sarthou has struggled this year.

just looking a this list, there is going to be outrage again as to who gets left off, cant fit all these guys,

my early 2017 USA team : Auston Matthews will not be here...Chychrun on the other hand after getting cut twice could jump ship...

Chychrun was cut once...and is essentially guaranteed a spot on Canada's team next year and will also be on the U18 Canada team this summer...if he was going to jump ship he would of done it a while ago so that's not happening.

Jump ship again, you mean. From U.S to Canada, back to U.S.; that would be jump ship, again.

DeBrincat is a '97.

Wouldn't be surprised if Tkahcuk is in the NHL.

Definitely think Werenski will be in the AHL.

Awesome write up. The US is stacked for next year, too. I'd be surprised if Werenski is available, he seems destined for the pros after this, but who knows.

Which U18 exactly this summer? If available he'll have a chance to play in the IIHF U18 tournament this spring (April) in Grand Forks, ND. That's he's last shot at playing U18 level, as by this summer the Hlinka team turns over to 1999 born players.

I don't think Dello is even in conversation.

Krys is a 98'

In goal you will also have Jurusik 97' ( Wisconsin ) in the mix for sure

Appreciate this post, one more guy to think about is Quinn Hughes, a great skating, puck moving defenseman with the U-17's. He could be on the radar as well. They'd obviously never take 3 kids on D that are on the U-18 team next year. But I'd add him to the potential list of 99 birth years on D. Really impressed with his play, and that's going back to last year when he played for the Toronto Marlboro's Midget Minor team.

Thanks, I like him as well but figured his time will come in 2 years...definitely a name to keep an eye on.

Scary but Yan, Bracco, and Gettinger have little shot again at this squad in my eyes

Great list, thanks for that. If I'm Chychrun I stay the course. I would admit that I can't make Team Canada and go with the second best. If I'm USA Hockey I accept a guy that can't make Team Canada, I don't think so.

well USA Hockey did it with Brett Hull, so not completely unheard of...

a bit different but Adam Deadmarsh jumped ship after making a Team Canada to the US the following year..and Tyler Myers in reverse..

I doubt it will happen, but if USA Hockey sells it right and the kid is bitter, he could come back home...either way I like the way this defense will be but now another year of speculation regardless how little the chance may be.
