And I love how the Marner hate continues even after he scores and played well :dunno::dunno: . There are 22 other guys on this roster as well. But yet he gets the brink like he's supposed to score 5 goals a game. He could have had a hat trick and people will continue to say he needs to produce more lmao:naughty:

Virtanen is such a dumb hockey player and this is coming from a Canucks fan.

He doesn't have any hockey smarts and has made it this far on physical tools alone. Virtanen and chemistry are two words that don't belong together.

It really sucks to be a Canucks fan. That top 6 pick was a huge turning point for our franchise. Sigh

It is a bit of a testament to your managerial incompetence that you managed to pick a better player at #24 than you did at #6. Take solace in McCann and hope Virtanen manages to put some semblance of his former self (pre shoulder injury) back together

He's out there all the time, the #16 seems to be omnipresent on the ice. Maybe some other players could do something positive if they got a chance to actually play.

Whenever Canada does not have players from the current draft class play in the top six, or have supporting roles, it is in trouble. Last year we had McDavid. Just look at the 98 Draft class. The top 6 are either Americans or Euros. Chychrun for all intent and purposes is an American, and even then, was was not deemed good enough to play for this squad. In fact, three 98's were invited to Main Camp and none made it past. Without support from the current draft year, the Team Canada squads are in trouble.

Wrong. Bob McKenzie repeating this every year does not make it so. Look at the Finns and Americans.

This team plays pathetically and there is plenty of blame to go around. Lowry's failures have been covered. What I don't understand is this - late in the first and early in the second, Canada started playing physically and started to control the game. This was the first time Canada played this way all tournament, and it's the best they've looked. At some point they just stopped, and proceeded to meekly play out the game. It's mystifying.

On the positive side, very good games by Konecny and Marner. Easily the best two Canadian players. Lowry finds a way to mitigate that though by shortening the bench so that Konecny's line, which was pretty effective, stopped playing completely. Konecny did have a shift further up the lineup, but it was literally only one shift.

Who is the starting goaltender after Blackwood's mediocre performance? I'm hoping for Blackwood, mainly because McDonald's ineptitude has been consistent for months. There is at least a chance that Blackwood is just a bit rusty. McDonald just isn't good this year.

Hmm, don't the Russians bring mostly 19 year olds and have medaled 22 of the last 24 years or something?

On my phone don't feel like looking it up but I'm sure someone could look it up

I have said this 1000 times. The whole process of selecting players is ********. The roster has pretty much been pre determined since the summer. No reason why Dal Colle and Ho-Sang should have been left off this roster. You need older players to help carry the load. Hockey Canada is one of the federations that is too political. Just take the best players period. Who cares is ho sang has behavioural problems, he can put a puck in the net. Dal Colle couldn't have been any worse than Chartier or Quenneville. Also that other draft eligible LW from Quebec could have been useful too.

Complete revision. Dal Colle is having a bad year and sucked in every evaluation exercise he participated in. Ho-Sang isn't good enough to justify his (proven) potential to cause headaches. He is also a right handed playmaker, which is exactly what this team does not need more of.

Marner was quite good against Sweden. Very strong defensively, smart with the puck, great shot on his goal. Most people know this. This thread/team/tournament is not about Marner though. If you look for slights on any forum you can invariably find some.

Pick the best players. Usually the best players will be 19 year olds, but that's not always the case. For instance, look at Canada, Finland and USA this year.

If Marner is playing bad the other 22 shouldn't even be in the tournament and definitely won't make the NHL lol

way too many canadian forwards doing nothing all tourney, like how many are pointless or have 1 point...thats just horrible...and who picked these defenders, they've been horrible as well

Embarrassing display today by Canada. I stand by my prediction that we'll lose in the QF, as there was little improvement today over the Swiss game and this version of Team Canada is not strong enough to beat a top six team.

Strome had a very poor game - weak on the puck, consistently telegraphing his shots, and slow on the backcheck and through the neutral zone.

Crouse and Point were largely invisible. Gauthier had a few nice shifts but the Barzal line as a whole didn't play a whole lot today nor did they have much of an impact when they were on the ice. Not a good outing for them.

Chartier, Perlini and Quenneville aren't good (particularly Quenneville) and should see very limited time against Finland. Virtanen took a stupid, undisciplined penalty and contributed nothing offensively. He was weak on the puck, lost seemingly every board battle, turned the puck over with blind passes to no one (or simply inaccurate passes), and took low % shots. Yet, he was rewarded with 1st line minutes and to me, Lowry's refusal to hold Virtanen accountable for his poor play and lack of discipline is inexcusable. I don't see any reason why he should play another shift this tournament.

Konecny, Stephens and Marner were our best forwards today. I have to believe Marner will play big minutes against Finland, not so sure about Konecny and Stephens. I've said all along that they deserve to be in the regular rotation, especially Konecny (who would compliment Strome much better than Virtanen) but I have no confidence in Lowry being smart enough to do that.

Chabot was good today. But I guess it's not a good indication of the quality of our defense corps when it's being led by an undrafted defenseman.

The goaltending was pretty awful today. We're not in good shape on that front either. Special teams need a lot of work. Thankfully Lowry has a full day tomorrow to prepare!

Great break down, agreed. Lowry doesn't seem to be able to adjust whatsoever.

I'd like to see Konecny with Marner, Konecny Barzal Marner maybe.

Marner's played well and he had a great game today, definitely not the reason we are here. This is on the coaching.

Exactly, btw I was saying I think he's playing good. I find it funny how people keep hating on him.

This team is done like dinner.

There have been Canadian teams before that struggle but still come up big but those teams had character.

This team has no character or identity.

Finland 4 with an empty netter.
Canada 2

Virtanen isn't injured.

He's just brain dead.

I don't believe that.
Maybe Jake is really nervous and too excited to play his father's home country.

I don't know much Canada's team but i see that it isn't so dominate than it was last year.
Of course it's quite impossible to replace McDavid,Domi, Reinhart etc key players last years gold medal team.

Unfortunately i won't be in Hartwall Arena in Saturday.
But i'll watch this game on TV i wish good luck for team Canada best one will win.

Who'll be Canada's starting goalie in Saturday is it Blackwood or McDonald?.
HAPPY NEW YEAR

Another thing to consider with Team Canada this year is a number of guys haven't been playing regularly this season and are almost finding their legs in the tournament, or at least shaking rust off. Point, Virtanen, and Stephens all sustained injuries this season and Blackwood is fresh off an 8 game suspension. I can't remember the last time so many players were rusty coming into the round robin.

The coaching is really really bad

Next year we will probably have one of the currnt assistants as the head coach, i dont want anyone from the current group as next years head coach

By the way i dont see anyine from the 2015 draft for canada in the nhl next year

We should have a strong team next year.

Virtanen is definitely playing injured. Same goes for Point.

I don't really get the Marner hate. He took shorter shifts and laid a questionable hit. I hope it doesn't get reviewed. I thought he played ok today.

Need more from Marner Point JV and Strome to produce offensively at 5 on 5. Can't rely on a 5 on 3. Every game.

Yeah, he has been underwhelming. Time to go back to McDonald

Hope not. Blackwood wasn't very good, but neither was McDonald. The difference is that Blackwood has at least played well most of this year. McDonald hasn't been good all year.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Ducharme as the coach next year. Assistant experience this year, up and coming coach, and I assume that Hockey Canada would like to have a French speaking coach for a tournament taking place in Quebec.

I feel like the Canadian teams would perform better without the intense level of scrutiny being applied to them. This is a good team that always gets somewhat bogged down with the hopes and egos of the whole country. Let the kids play. They're damn good. No need to handicap them with undue pressure.

This whole team needs to increase their maturity level. I mentioned this before in an earlier thread, but after this game, it deserves to be repeated. I know their juniors but in a tournament thats being dominated by draft eligible players, they are the only ones acting like children. Is it really that hard for them to keep they're emotions in check. They are running around everywhere, giving out punches after the whistle. This team doesnt have discipline. They need to raise their maturity level or the might as well pack theirt bags.
