This is a great post and good assessment. I also liked the McNabb deal - getting 2 high picks back was also great. I know at least 1 helped land Gaborik. Deslauriers, while making a good transition to forward, was never going to make a big impact there with the Kings. Fasching was having a great Freshman year and between the two of them,
helped fetch McNabb and the 2 picks. The Sabres had a new GM and 2 other yound defenseman, moved ahead of McNabb and the Kings jumped on that. They had apparently called McNabb one of the best defensemen, not playing in the NHL. He has a good future here.

As far as Kempe and Zykov, not many here are touting them as future, sure fire offensive dynamos. To be fair, Nylander was the #8 choice last yr and Kempe was the last pick of round 1, at #30. Zykov was 40 something, a second rounder.
The way I see it, is that Kempe is 18 and Zykov turns 20 next month. They both just arrived 2 and 1 week ago in Manch. Once they begin working extensively with the Kings development staff fulltime and play in Ontario next year, we will have a better
gauge this time next year, regarding their upside. A lot can happen in a year, for both of them. Nothing indicates either is going to be a 50+ point NHL player right now. For the elite of the elite, yes, you can tell when they are 18 that they will be dynamic. But for any even a cut below that, who knows. All others lack something in their game. I jist like the chances, with the development system on place now, that there is actually hope that these kids succeed andbecome the best they can be - which is that of potential top 6 players. No one here thought Pearson was going to be a top LW when he was drafted...even after a year in Manchester.

great post, just wanted to point out Kempe was the second last pick at 29 (new jersey got the 30th from the Kavalchuk crap)

Great work as always KP; thanks
What do you think about this guy; is he secondround worthy ?

Thanks :)

Second round isn't absurd, but I would say he's more likely to go third round. Solid player who logs a lot of minutes and priority shifts.

I can dig that. Pearson is a 2nd line LW with size speed and talent. He was technically a rookie last season so he has time to prove himself but so far so good. I wouldn't call him a top line player just yet but I think he has the talent to be one under the right circumstances.

I've always liked the thought process behind picking players like Pearson. He is the epitomy of a late bloomer. Remember, he only had two seasons in the OHL. He would have been a 100+ point guy for sure.

Watching Pearson/Carter/Toffoli in the first part of the season was amazing. I haven't felt that good about a Kings line since Deadmarsh/Allison/Palffy. Exciting to watch. And Pearson is exactly the type of player we need - fast, intelligent and great work ethic. Tyler and Tanner just need another year or two and I think they could both be 1st line material. Hell - you could even argue that they've already shown that they can do that on the NHL level..just not for the whole length of the season yet.

yes! bad memories...my first game attended was dec 1974 and I recall all of that! Duncanson and Gratton? Bad..and the goalie was Bob Janecyk in the other deal...I was drivng over the grapevine and tuning into KFWB Sports (at 15 and 45 every hour) to hear who the Kings drafted...I had my Hockey News with me and read about Redmond and was less than thrilled...5'10" defenseman and Janecyk? I was drivng with some buddies to the Merced River to take our whitewater rafts on. Good times, bad hockey memories...I am sure you recall the 'Fire Maguirre' chants we did at the Forum. I had season seats and went to the draft parties too...the Jokinen one in which Nick Nickson held up his jersey at the podium, as the Kings brass was walking to the podium to announce it...and the 2003 one was pretty good.

2003 had its good points. I remember the free catered breakfast and them picking Dustin Brown. But then I remember it going downhill fast when a trade the Kings were working on fell through, and they ended up picking Boyle and Tambellini 26th and 27th. Then of course the Ducks chose Corey Perry 28th. Uggggg. But the free breakfast was great! This was the last draft party I went to.

Now if the Kings had a draft party this summer, I think I'd make it a point to go. But I don't think Deano likes having losers parties.

I wonder if LA will try to move up to Colorado's or Florida's pick to nab Zacha?

I think Zacha will be gone by that point, I view him as one of the top 7 guys in the draft.

I think it's in the realm of possibility. Colorado would make some sense if they miss out on Provorov/Werenski and they already moved their 2016 2nd rounder. I could see them moving down.

Florida is hosting the Draft, so I'm not sure if there's any external pressure to not trade down. I always find it interesting to see what the host team does at the Draft. More often then not, they make some splash.

2008: Ottawa traded up for Erik Karlsson
2009: Montreal drafted a local kid in Louis Leblanc
2010: Kings traded up for Derek Forbort (although DL said he was initially looking to move back)
2011: Minnesota traded Brent Burns, got an extra pick late in the 1st
2012: Pittsburgh traded Jordan Staal, added the 8th overall pick
2013: New Jersey traded its top pick for Cory Schneider

One scenario I could see happening is Florida announcing at the Draft that they've traded for Patrick Sharp.

Zacha would go anywhere from #6 to #13 and I wouldn't be particularly shocked.

Hypothetically:

1-5: some order of McDavid/Eichel/Hanifin/Strome/Marner
6. New Jersey - Barzal - Draft stock seemed to be getting a boost with the last couple months.
7. Philadelphia - Crouse - Fits a need, plus size/character seems to fit to a T.
8. Columbus - Provorov - They've loaded up on forwards of late, so adding a cornerstone D seems likely.
9. San Jose - Werenski - Sharks could go any direction, but a PPQB makes some sense.

That'd leave Zacha at #10, but how much would you give Colorado to move up? #13 and #43? That might seem a bit much to move up three spots, but if Zacha was the #7 guy on your list, giving up #13 and #43 is more palatable.

I really think Zacha goes 6-10 despite team needs. Especially because people seem skeptical about Crouse and Barzal has been a bit of a wild card up and down draft lists.

Each year someone falls. Just for the Kings recently we've had Kopitar and Tukonen fall to us. Hopefully the Kings will hit it right. My guess for falling, it will be Rantanen, the Finnish bull.

My Top Five

Zacha-Unlikely to fall
Konecny-Reminds of Mike Richards(When he was good)
Svechnikov-Kings could use some flash and dash
Meier-Solid 2/3 line winger
Connor-Seems to have good potential.

I've been hearing on some of the radio podcasts about teams trying to move up, (rumors of the leafs wanting the #5 pick from the Canes and how much they'd be willing to go and some other teams that want to move from the 10-15 slot up into the top10.

This article (and a chart) studied 46 trades from 2006- 2012 and came up with a ratio of what a fair movement would be, how much to give up and what that better pick is worth, what is the estimated value.

Thanks for posting. I'm surprised there isn't more study of draft pick values being done. The NFL is huge on it. I think baseball is as well. Granted, it might be easier to assign a value given those players typically step straight into the professional ranks, but there should be a value indicator for the NHL as well.

so the question is would you give up 1st and 2nd this year to get Zacha?

Honestly, I think I would. I know DL is a killer in the second round, but they would only make this move if they absolutely loved Zacha. If they had the faith to make that trade, I'd be happy with it.
