"Forward Stefan Matteau (Chicago, Ill./Albany) has returned to the U.S. after suffering an injury in the team's exhibition game against Austria on Tuesday (April 28)."

Will they replace Matteau ?

Interesting. Bummer for Matteau. Matteau wasn't registered with the IIHF today (nor were Lyon, Campbell, Lee, and Nelson). That leaves 1 skater spot left. Could get an upgrade up front, although I'm sure most of the currently available players may have already declined invites.

Matt Hendricks is our captain.

Maybe Craig Anderson will wanna get some extra work in after his brief end to the season. One could hope. Otherwise here's to hoping Jack Campbell still has some magic from the world juniors left in him.

Hellebuyck will start over Campbell without a doubt.

And no goalie spots left. I was reading the twitter handle above for Julie Robenhymer and she stated we have two skater spots and 1 goalie spot left, which is incorrect.

You can register 25 players for this tournament. If there are spots left, they can be registered during the tournament (I think till end of group phase).

Wow. The predictions of an easy victory for Finland in the GDT by a lot of posters were stupid but I certainly wasn't expecting a 5-1 victory for us.

PK was great today. Special teams are so important in these tournaments so that was good to see. PP wasn't good but less chances and with only 4 practices so far as a team that's not surprising.

Moses is fun to watch. Waterbug of a player but he's skilled, fast, and understands the international game.

Hendricks kept it simple, drove the net and parked himself in front of Rinne all game long, and got the results for it. The interference call against him was terrible but it's the IIHF so it's expected.

Lots of folks were ragging on Dan Sexton but he played really well. He's not an NHLer but I'd rather guys like Sexton get a chance here than filling the roster with more 3rd/4th liners from the NHL. Why? He plays this style of game all year long - this isn't the NHL.

Justin Faulk was fighting the puck all game long. He'll be a lot better as the tournament goes along. I thought our two best d-man today were Murphy and Reilly. Murphy in particular was a rock.

Hellebuyck was good, especially early on. He had a few rebounds he'd like back but that's not surprising as his only game action in a long while was the 2 periods against Austria. He wasn't tested all that much after the team regained their lead in the 2nd period up until the last couple of minutes when the game was already settled.

Early on you could see the team figuring it all out. They struggled with their gaps/lanes and the d-men were standing up in offensive zone far too much in the first. They started to settle in as the game rolled along though.

You can tell the college kids are still getting their legs back as they haven't played hockey in awhile, either.

Great start.
