It should happen, and as I stated in my post those are the lines I would have had. But it probably doesn't.

Virtanen will play with Gauthier. Against the Russians they were very effective. If someone in the top 6 falters the lines could be switched but for now Virtanen is a third or fourth line guy

Yes I get that. But what I'm saying is he should be a top 6 guy. He's playing well, and I think he would be dynamite on a line with McDavid. Putting Virtanen on Gauthier's line is a waste.

Virtanen hasn't matched Gauthier's scoring in major junior this year. Come down to earth with your teams prospect. Be happy he made the team at all

So you just stat watch? Or do you watch the players at all?

Virtanen had a slow start coming off of shoulder surgery. He's played great since. He's also playing in a league where not everyone is a 1.5 PPG player. :shakehead

It has nothing to do with my teams prospects. It has everything to do with wanting the best team Canada possible.

The best for Canada is if your boy plays his forth line role

Last time i checked- Points do determine who the leading scorers are in a league, rather than PPG. Listen- i said what i had to say. Canada left the leading scorer in the OHL back home in Dylan Strome, and regardless if McDavid was hurt, that was a fact. What i said was a fact, and let's not get into technicalities, because Strome was leading in points at the time, and Marner was Top 5. Strome and Marner both deserved invites, and regardless if they made the team or not; they both deserved shots at making this team. I said my piece.

Nah, this is what you said.

is that 2 years in a row when the leading ohl scorer hasnt even got an invite?

You were obviously implying a trend where Canada leaves the top OHL scorers off the team. Basically a twist of the truth considering the two "best" scorers - though technically not "top" due to missing games - are in fact on the team. Your attempt to link it to previous years was disengenuous.

These are good points. While I do believe that they did a good job picking the team this year for the most part, it wasn't as good as it could have been. There is no reason to remove competition from the selection camp. Other teams have gone further toward introducing competition to their camps over the last while, and Canada seems to be going in the opposite direction. What is the downside of bringing a few other elite players to camp? They outperform the previously anointed players, and make things a little more challenging for the coaching staff? I'll take that risk.

The insanity of only bringing two goaltenders to camp (no competition, plus they don't even bring a third stringer) makes the selectors look cowardly in my eyes. Last year they were talking about how they believed the pressure on Canada's goaltenders at this tournament is causing poor performances. How convenient to blame pressure instead of the goaltenders themselves for not being good enough... and also the Canadian model for not churning out quality goaltenders anymore.

I am still extremely annoyed at them for only bringing two goaltenders to this tournament. You would have thought they'd seen how badly that turned out last year (first one guys the go to; then the other; then they realized neither was up to snuff).

Nope, they do the same thing and are forced to bring a returning goalie who pretty much everyone knows is not good enough. That leaves all the pressure on Comrie and as soon as he slips one iota they'll be back to playing mr justloses

???

Virtanen 23 in 20

Gauthier 14 in 15

You're right in that he hasn't matched it, as he's exceeded it.

Nobody wants to hear you whine that Virtanen is not on McDavids line.

Please show me where I was whining?

I get it, you're a little defensive about me suggesting your boy Gauthier shouldn't be on team Canada. What you fail to realize is I couldn't care less about who owns these prospects rights. What I want to see is the best team Canada possible.

Perhaps this is a silly way of looking at it but...

Would posters prefer Russia outshoot Canada 50 - 15 and Canada wins in OT during a meaningless exhibition game or the results from last night? I would prefer the latter.

If the roles were reversed and we were dominated like Russia was, posters here would be hanging themselves. Again, we looked great. Should we have parked (even one more of our endless) chances? Of course - hopefully that will come with chemistry and regular line mates. Let's just wait and see.

We looked great - definitely. But when you outshoot the other team that badly and the two goals they score on your "supposed starter" are both bad ones, means we have a problem in goal.

Big games, OT and shootouts are usually decided by who has the best goalie. I think Comrie is good yes but what happens if he falters too?

This is why I was thinking we should have kept MDC. Sure he didn't score but he is a sniper and has that ability. Forget about Lazar on McDavid's wing. Stack our centers and roll our lines evenly: Reinhart-McDavid-Lazar-Paul, then flank them with our talented wingers: Domi-Duclair, Fabbri-Virtanen, MDC-Petan, Ritchie-Point. Some of those wingers can play C too.

But yes, with how we dominated Russia I don't have too many concerns. With McDavid and Lazar in the lineup I bet we get a couple more goals in a 50 shot effort.

Care to explain why or is this just your personal opinion because you hate the Canucks?

Has nothing to do with hating the Canucks ( I don't). It's that literally nobody at a Hockey Canada or in the media is projecting Virtanen to play on a line with McDavid, except Canucks fans.

So either that's a huge coincidence, or blatant homerism.

From all the comments it certaily is about who owns a prospect

Honestly it's less about not being on McDavid's line - Jake would be effective with Reinhart, Petan, Lazar, or Point - than not wanting to see him saddled with a lead balloon like Gauthier. Seems a poor fit to put an open ice, offensive player with a guy who plays best along the boards and is only along for face offs and PK. Can't blame us for thinking he could be better used ...

Hope exists that Canada might go with McDavid, Reinhart, Petan and Paul down the middle with Gauthier being saved mostly for key faceoffs and penalty killing. Hope.

Have you even watched any of these exibition games? Gauthier has been much more than you suggest and last might made a lot of nice passes. Are you suggesting that Virtanen is so one dimensional that he has to have a generational talent to play with to be effective

hoping for the them to make a smart strategic move is pushing it, Jack... I wouldn't get your hopes up.

I hope Comrie steals the show tomorrow...but knowing HC, Fucale seems to be their chosen guy! They'll sink or swim with him.

Fucale sort of reminds me of Dumba in a way. showed great promise and played well as a 16 and 17 year old. Played well at the Ivan Hlinka tournament delivering gold. HC falls in love and is forever committed to him though good times and bad and ignores that in those 2 years since, other players have passed them on the development scale.

Ritchie - Lazar - Virtanen
Paul - Gauthier - Point
Crouse

If Ritchie gets there and decides he doesn't want to play like he should be which is entirely possible, switch him with Crouse.

Morrisey - Bowey
Nurse - Theodore
Morin - Hicketts
Heatherington

Can we just switch Paul with Ritchie? Sens fans would like that :P

Ya I watched, wasn't hard seeing it was on a national telecast. Again it isn't about playing with a 'generational' talent seeing as I listed off 4 other guys I think Jake would be more effective with, none of which are close to 'generational'. Simply feel Jake's strengths would better fit with more dynamic skaters. And yes Jake is, at the moment, somewhat one-dimensional in how he scores. And while most Canuck fans agree he needs to grow his cycling game the WJCs aren't the place to do that. Competition is too high to put players in situations where they can't play to their strengths. And if Jake plays to his strengths (just as Gauthier and every other player on TC) then Canada will have a better chance to win gold. Ultimately serves TC to put players in situations where they can best contribute.

Sure most Canuck fans have an extra interest in a Canuck prospect at this tourny - whoa, what a unique concept - but we all want a gold for Canada as much or more.
