Just due to the shear numbers of NHL players that stay in the USA after they retire and have children or get involved in youth sports, the U.S. team will only get better and better.

That's where Galchenyuk, Stastny, and Parise come from, maybe more.

If I were in the Olympics I'd love to do the Skeleton or the Luge. Those look fun.

Come out to Utah.. You can train/run on the track. These have clubs and all sorts. My wife and I did it two years ago (bobsled), a lot of fun.

I wonder how many people yell "Cool Runnings!" before they go down.

I bet it's a lot, and I'd be one of them.

A terrible call spoils one of the greatest goaltending performances in Olympic history. Shocking.

(Also, see the perfectly-placed outlet pass on the lone Latvia goal? That was Arturs Kulda.;))

As I said, the USA would and are playing Canada for the right to play for the gold... I'm not sure who will win but goaltending usually decides... I'd start Ryan Miller based on his experience but Quick is getting the start...

As for Russia, the entire Russian coaching staff should be sent to the gulog.. Bob should have started and the Russian coaching thing of 5 man lines (three forwards and two defenseman paired) is so antiquated it's rediculous... Team Russia is not a team, it's 24 individuals... They need to hire Canadian or American coaches in the future...

Ted Nolan is an outstanding coach, Latvia gave Canada a scare that may carry over into the semi's... That Latvia AHL goalie (property of Tampa I think) will be seen much more in the future...

I laughed when I turned it on & saw Varlomov was getting the start. Leaving the best goalie on the bench in an elimination game is crazy.
Russia deserved to lose.

Yes, and I never felt that way until this year. I could get behind the event with much more enthusiam if it didn't blur NHL team affiliation lines. Also, what a great way to learn who the up and coming US and world talent is than to show case them in the Olympics.

I didn't feel this way until this year either. But I'm telling you, I watch the athletes and their families in the other sports and I tear up because they're seemingly so grateful to be there and it means so much to them and their communities (I just eat that hometown hero, small-town "average American" stuff up  Olympic competition and medals are actually the pinnacle of their achievements and they seem humbled by it)

Sounds like I missed a good performance by not watching the Latvia - Canada tilt. Well I'm off on Friday, I'll definitely tune in for the USA game. Bummer for Russia. I didn't know who started for them in goal and the first recap I read described one of the goals being scored on Bob. Relieved to hear that was inaccurate.

And let me add, since this is the Olympic thread, watching that 15-year-old female Russian figure skater spin is kind of freaky. I feel like I'm watching the X Files or something, it doesn't seem human :amazed:

(I'm also not entirely comfortable that she's wearing a quasi-thong at that age)

Dude was out of his mind today. Terrific. I felt bad for him that the goal came right after he had to get worked on.

He is apparently with the 'Cuse.

Watched a Canadian feed of the game. Announcers said that the Latvia goaltender was drafted by Yzerman and, as you said, is playing in Syracuse in the Lighting organization.

Would have been hilarious to see one of Stevie Y's draft picks undo Canada's chance for a medal. Alas, it was not to be.

Did you miss the part right before that when the puck was heading over the line and the Latvian defenceman covered it with his hand? I'd say Latvia got off lucky with the officials.

so unbelievable that the russian "coach" decided to play Varyl, a goalie who is known to be choking under stress. Bob proved himself against the US where he only missed two goals during PP while saving the team numerous times.

there are also reports about Bill ruining Malkin by not playing him enough and especially by telling him to be much more defensive. He was basically stripped of his talent in the games. Pathetic.

Missed calls happen. Egregious makeup calls in favor of a team that was outshooting the other 53-14 at that point don't.

Tavares out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. A huge hit for the Isles. If owned a team, I really wouldn't want my players in the Olympics.

The Islanders were ripped for not letting Visnovsky go, and then Tavares gets injured. Talk about the ultimate "damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenario.
