I'm definitely a huge fan of JT Miller. I don't like the game-to-game basis he's judged by, but the team did fine without him.
The question is how long is the window open to compete for a Cup? People talk about Detroit patience but they've been irrelevant since 2009.
They need a 50-point center who can anchor a PP. Miller isn't there yet. But where do you play him to give him a chance to blossom?
I think Miller was drafted to be a 3rd line center. Just not one year removed from a SCF.
Again, the only guy I advocate trading is Staal because of his likely contract demands and the distinct possibility Skjei will be NHL ready in two season.
Trade Staal for a center, resign Stralman and sign a veteran top-4 to replace Staal until Skjei is ready.
No guarantees. Only guarantee is Staal will command 6+, term and an NMC, and lots of teams will give him that as a UFA.
