Discussion thread for the non-hockey events of the 2014 Olypmic Games.

I should do something with my day, but I'm stuck in front of the TV. Speed skating is a tantalizingly soothing and beautiful sport.

It was exhilarating watching Charlotte Kalla win silver in the 15+15 skiathlon earlier today. Go Sweden!

And what was even better was seeing Marit Bjørgen win the gold and Heidi Weng win the bronze medal in the same event :sarcasm:

On a serious note was this an extremely emotional event for the Norwegian team. Astrid Urenhold Jacobsen, who hadn't been picked for this distance, brother and training partner died unexpectedly yesterday, which was something that hit the whole team hard. Both Bjørgen and Weng cried at the flower cermony and interviews afterwards and the same did Therese Johaug who finished fourth. On Norwegian televison they also showed them all hugging eachother while crying together afterwards.

Also great to see Ståle Sandbech win the silver in mens slopestyle today, even though he might have deserved the gold.

That was apparently a bit of a gong-show, as is the norm in sports based on judgment. It seems like the consensus within those in the sport that Sage Kotsenburg got way more points than he deserved and some of the guys behind him less than they deserved.

This isn't just from Swedish media, but British as well.

Honestly, I don't think sports with a judgment aspect deserve to be in the Olympics. Let alone be called sports for that matter.

Re: Skiathlon. Considering that it is Kalla's worst event and that she has never been top-3 in international competition before, a silver is a huge accomplishment.

Björgen is superhuman and should be banned from Olympic competition. :sarcasm:

Felt bad for Johaug though, she looked set for bronze and just missed. She hasn't yet gotten an individual Olympic medal.

Though I think some of my sympathy lies in the fact that she is probably the hottest skier in the field! ;)

Yay!

America won gold already. Fudge yeah!
Looks like it could be a Dutch sweep in the 5000! WA and Maxima are pleased!
Ice Dancing SD is on in 30 minutes. Go Merlie!

I'm livid that ice dancing has gotten priority over rodel in Swedish programming. Rodel is only on their web service which isn't included in the cable subscription.

Rodel is actually exciting, ice dancing has no place in the Olympics.

Tell that to Americans! Good thing NBC have live feeds of other events online so if people don't want to watch figure skating on NBCSN, they can watch other events.

Planning to watch the biathlon online while waiting for Davis and White (and Virtue and Moir) on tv.

Landertinger, Eder and Sumann kicking some ass Biathlon-wise early. Nice. Gogogo Austria! Lets see where this is going. Getting a medal would be pretty sensational.

and, for the record, I'd be even happier if Björndalen won gold in this. That's one of the greatest athletes of our time.

As long as Björndalen doesn't win I'm fine with whatever. ;)

E: Looks like we posted diametrically opposite opinions at the same time!

Austria are looking pretty good for the relay then? It's probably the only biathlon event where Sweden has a shot at medaling.

I guess when you don't have a rivalry with Norway you can appreciate Björndalen's greatness. To a Swede it is just salt in a wound.

Yeah I get you. I just can't say "Germany are probably the b**t soccer team in the world" either. It hurts my brain.

There was a live poll on one of the major Swedish papers during their live feed from the biathlon that looked like this:

"Will Sweden win a medal in the biathlon?"

One option for each of the four Swedish participants.

"No, they will miss their shots."

and

"The Norwegians will win everything."

The last option got the most votes by far.

Biathlon was entertaining. At times, more than ice dancing.

Btw, Davis and White won their portion of the competition. Top 3 in the team event is Russia (1st), Canada (2nd), USA (3rd).

Ski Jumping is coming up online; ladies figure skating on NBCSN.

How come when I go to the NBC Live streaming section of the Olympics website, it's showing me the 2010 gold medal game? I don't want to watch that EVER again.

I can't believe they let the game finish in a tie after Parise scored late in the third :sarcasm:
