It’s obvious we shouldn’t expect his stats to be as good in the NHL as KHL, but it should still be expected that he’ll be a star goalie. He is the best goalie prospect on the planet
Some would definitely make a case for Hart, Sorokin, or even Samsonov. I'll take Shesterkin but it's pretty close.

I don't have any expectations. Goalies are so hard to predict, especially moving between European and Russian leagues and the U.S. I have great hopes for him, but I don't expect him to be a star or anything else.

refreshing to see someone here gets it.
It's unlikely, but it's really not completely out of the question if he spends a couple months there to adjust to the smaller rink.

We all said the same about Hank, but he played extremely well in camp and earned his spot on the team, i'm confident the same will happen with igor.

What if he can't keep the puck out to save his life in the NHL? If he actually cares about playing in the best league in the world and being on an original 6 team as the successor to a hall of fame goalie he's going to have to suck it up and play in Hartford if that's what's needed for him to take the next step.

While his stats are sexy, I am wholly unconvinced they will translate at all to the NHL - at least in the beginning. Not to discredit his accomplishments entirely, but we've seen a slew of other, less exciting goalies put up similarly impressive stats playing on that team.

Always been against categorical statements. Yeah, it's unlikely that he spends even a few months in Hartford, even more unlikely - the whole season, but I'm sure it won't be an issue if he will need to play a few games in the AHL during NHL breaks similar to how Georgiev has done this year. If the Rangers didn't have two goalies already at a level of Lundquist and Georgiev I might have had a different view but in this case something's got to give in order to keep all three at a certain number of games.

Shesterkin has had to go through sharing the net with another goalie throughout his KHL career. In earlier years he actually did have to play quite a few games in the VHL even though he was already well above this league. My point is not once he gave any indication that he was bothered or upset. At all times he showed himself as a good teammate and a "supportive" member of SKA organization, so if there will be 10-20 games next season for him to play in the AHL - it wouldn't be a big deal.

It's Shestyorkin on his jerseys everywhere so far. But I just know they will change it to Shesterkin the moment he moves to NA.
When the Rangers write about him, they write Shesterkin. His player page is Igor Shesterkin. Igor Shesterkin Stats and News

It's no big deal, just how they transliterate from Russian/Cyrillic in the States. It's not right or wrong, just different. TPS spelled Georgiev as "Aleksandar Georgijev." When he was on an MHL team they transliterated it to English as "Alexander Georgiyev." So for him, three different countries, three different spellings of his first name, three different spellings of his last name.

I've been writing Shesterkin for awhile now. Might as well get used to it.

I know. And I guess I am just used to the Russian-Latin spelling.

I kind of went from Shesterkin to Shestyorkin...and now it looks like we're going back to Shesterkin again?

This doesn't just happen to Russians and Eastern Europeans by the way. I have an Irish background and how my name would be spelled in Irish is a whole lot different than the way it's spelled in English--though if you try to sound it out phonetically it makes sense to the English transliteration...and it's a very common name.

I believe the Rangers have spelled it Shesterkin since day one.

I posted somewhere else, Georgiev's last three organizations have spelled his name:
Alexandar Georgiev
Aleksandar Georgijev
Alexander Georgiyev

Three different first names, three different last names. Transliteration is weird.

Who can forget poor Varly, coming over as "Semen" Varlamov.

Caps sure were excited to gobble up Semen at the 2006 draft.

Dont think it's the end of the world for the kid if he spends a month in the AHL

It's a bigger issue for fans here than players.

They understand how these things work.

The NHL is not for developing players or allowing them time to get used to the smaller rinks and everything that comes with a goalie getting accustomed to the faster paced games.

Players understand this, agents understand this.

Igor spending a month in the AHL is a non-issue

It's mostly a financial thing for players. Players are ELC-eligible for their first contract until the age of 28 (EU skaters)
