Also doesn’t make his numbers look all that special in comparison. We really need to get a look at this kid over here.

I draft Spencer Knight if I have 3 first rounders. Too good to not take him and he’s at least 4 5 years behind shesterkin.

I like Shestyorkin and think he has a good shot at becoming a starter in the NHL eventually.

But I do agree with you in a sense, he is far from that monster type who destroys shooters. Like sure it’s marking words and so what not — but I just don’t think it’s fair to label him as maybe the top goalieprospect and so forth. He is up there in that echelon. Great. Quite frankly I wouldn’t at all be surprised if someone like Geo posted the same type of numbers for SKA as Shestyorkin have. Don’t think it’s fair to put distance between Shesty and the rest.

SKA is SKA, everyone does great for them. And Shestyorkin has done — slightly — better, at times, than top Euro goaltenders there but also mostly not been able to win the top job against top experienced Euro goalies. And I don’t for a second think that there is any bias AGAINST the homegrown kid in favor of a Swedish journeyman...

He's starting again. Stopped 6 shots in the first. Ak Bars getting rolled 3-0.

I feel like he's becoming the forgotten man here. I'm the only one that pays attention to when he's playing it seems.
We have shiny new toys doing well. Igor is pretty much doing as expected and is kind of old-hat until he comes over.

Not to disrespect Shesty, but that's how it is.

Fun Fact of the day: The goalie who was splitting time with Shest over the last few years in the KHL, Mikko Koskinen, the guy who put up great numbers like Shest, is 9-3-1, has a 2.06 GAA, and a .929 save % in 14 NHL games with the Oilers this season.

I mean, if Shesty at the very least played comparably well next to Koskinen he's going to be at least this good on the Rangers instead of the Oilers right?

Arizona might wanna take a flier on Koskinen.

I mean Mikko Koskinen was the #31 pick (high for a goalie) almost 10 years ago and then spent his career playing in Liiga and on a KHL power. The talent was always supposed to be there, so it's shouldn't be terribly surprising that he's having success finally. It will be the same story if Shesterkin's current partner, Hellberg (#38 in 2011) comes back in a few years and plays well. And Hellberg was actually decent in his NA stint, which probably increases the odds.

People mocked the oilers when they signed Koskinen and early returns as I recall weren't that great.

Feel bad for Talbot though...I think he's a good goalie but the Oilers aren't easy to play for and maybe he's better as a platoon style goalie rather than #1

Shesterkin took the loss today stopping 13 of 16. He's now 14-4 with a 1.39 GAA and .942 SV%.

Problematically, Hellberg is 15-3-2 with a 1.14 GAA and .946 SV%.

Before, the argument could generally be made that Shesterkin played better than the veteran in front of him. Statistically, that's not really the case right now. They're even, or slight nod to Hellberg. So, how many starts will Shesterkin get down the stretch, if Hellberg is playing well and with SKA knowing Shesterkin is likely a goner? It really sucks that he finds himself in this similar circumstance every year. Can't get him over soon enough.

So now the question is how that can translate to the NHL. In the KHL, the game is played on the much larger international ice surface, so he faces far fewer sharp-angle chances, and less traffic in front. The game is far more finesse and a lot less battling in front. Yet Bobrov said that Shesterkin is “very, very good at tracking the puck through traffic, calm seeing the puck through several screens. I don’t expect that to be a great challenge, because he’s good at that.”

Of course, the adjustment to living in New York and playing in North America could be a shock for anyone. But at least on the ice, there would be the help of Rangers goaltending guru Benoit Allaire, regarded as one of the best in the sport at what he does.

“Igor is very aware of the amount of knowledge that Benny has,” Bobrov said.

And so Shesterkin is going to play out the rest of this year in the KHL, the final year of his contract, and then go once more to the World Championships in May in Slovakia. (There is a good chance he could meet a couple Rangers teammates over there, as well, playing after what is likely to be a playoff-less spring.)

Then, assuming general manager Jeff Gorton can get him to sign an entry-level deal, Shesterkin will join the Rangers for training camp in September. That is when it will be seen up close just how good he is, and possibly project just how good he can be.

Being of fairly limited knowledge I’ll hold off on the assement of Shesty. I know he plays on a good team... so when he comes over and starts working here I guess we (me) will know more.

Agreed. People are going to be upset when he struggles at first. He might be a top prospect but if we're expecting his stats to carry over we're going to be severely disappointed

I'd really have wished he come over sooner and was already working with Allaire. He's going to be almost 24 before he even plays a single game here

I have little doubt he'll be a good player here. It's just a matter of whether he'll be a solid starter or a potential star. I always have him third or fourth in our prospect polls and it's because of this; goalies are hard to project, harder than skaters IMO. More so when they're coming from Europe or Russia.
