Actually, that's not a bad idea. If play was allowed behind the nets the game would be a lot more interesting

As for diving, there should be video replay after every game and players who faked plays should be suspended for the next game

Nah, the best thing they can do is give them yellow cards more than they already do. It's a tricky thing to try and remove.

Yellow cards won't help when the possible reward is a penalty kick. And it's also much harder to see for the refs than on video. GordonGecko is right, the solution to eliminate diving is to hand out suspensions after the game based on video footage. Make them escalatfiest (1 for the first dive, 2, 4 etc. for the ones after) and players will think twice before going down.

If the NHL did this, Montreal would run out of players.

Maybe, but they would learn fast. Just like in soccer, it's all about weighing up risk vs. benefit. As long as a yellow is the worst you could get, while being rewarded a penalty kick is possible, it's a net positive and diving is worth the risk. Likewise in hockey, where usually the worst result for embellishment is matching minors.

Any word how long Altidore is out for?

Not yet. He's being evaluated today.

We're in trouble though. Johannsson is talented but looked completely worthless last night. We'll also need Bradley to play better.

On the back end, if DaMarcus has another game like that...yikes.

The funny part is, as a Sunderland fan, I hated Jozy all year. I was a major fan of Johannsson and thought he would fit this teams style better.

After seeing yesterday, Aron is a good guy to have off the bench for that spark, but we need Jozy to control the ball up top. They had far to much trouble doing that last night.

I think the big thing is Aron needs to be a go to guy. He's a speedy striker. With Dempsey, he becomes unnecessary since he's the guy they're always looking to get the ball to.

Jozy compliments Dempsey much better. I really hated him, but he is a vital part of this USMNT. From his interviews, he seems in good spirits, so fingers crossed.

Saw my first ever BPL game in person this year, Sunderland at Fulham. Saw Clint and Jozy. In this game, Sunderland's strategy seemed to be to have the keeper crush the ball downfield towards Jozy where he was to win it and dish it off. He was responsible for 2 goals in a 4-1 win for Sunderland, including drawing a PK. They played off him very well. US is thin up front for sure. Sure wish Eddie Johnson was on the squad. They could really use him now.

I watched every Sunderland game this year, including the C1 cup and FA cup, you literally watched one of Jozy's two good games this year and easily his best. I don't mean that negatively, just that you got lucky with the game you chose to watch :)

He's good at keeping the ball up, but for a striker, can't finish at all. When we were surviving relegation at the end of the year, we would have a lead and bring him on in the 70-80th minute strictly to hold the ball up.

He can't be relied on to be your scorer. We paid a lot for him and got 1 goal in the EPL this season.

Glad I was so lucky. I really enjoyed the experience, especially the Sunderland fans. They sang and chanted from an hour before the game to an hour afterwards. I sat near them and it was great fun.

i expect johansson to be better next time around if he starts. its difficult coming into the match so early through injury and he didnt have any support. bradley had prob his worst ever game for the usa and deuce was slowed significantly after getting kicked in the face.

I Mis-read, I didn't realize you were there, i thought you meant watched on tv lol.

Dude, I'm so jealous. Like seriously. I'm waiting until I'm a little older. I never meet any Sunderland fans in the USA :(

I was shocked by how bad Bradley was, Jermaine Jones was absolutely fantastic and saved us yesterday. Bradley needs to get his stuff together and fast. He needs to hang onto the ball longer instead of trying to dish everything off immediately. I have faith he'll bounce back.

I started following SAFC when Jozy went there. I went to that game because (1) it is a lot easier to get tickets to Fulham than to Chelsea or Arsenal and (2) because Clint and Jozy would be playing. If you get the chance, get to an EPL game. It is an amazing experience. I bet the games at SAFC are really amazing. Fulham crowd is rather sedate. Their park is in the middle of 1 Million Pound homes along the Thames. Very happy that SAFC stayed up. It was quite an effort by them.

It's definitely on the bucket list. I'm going to Barcelona, actually next week an am going to tour Camp Nou.. Obviously no games, unfortunately, but nonetheless, I"m excited. I'll be on a cruise for the final which should be a cool experience, especially it being in Europe.

Stadium of Light is in a very industrial area. I'd imagine the fans are nuts. I'm actually friends with a few guys that I met on Twitter that have invited me to stay over an go to a game if I can make it there. Sounds crazy, I know but EPL fans are nuts and just love other fans of their team(s). I can't wait to someday get there, maybe it'll be my trip for next year. :naughty:

Did anyone happen to go to a viewing party in the city yesterday? Looking for suggestions for Sunday. I went to the Wharf yesterday, since it's near my office. Good atmosphere, but it is what it is. Still fun. Would like something filled with slightly more knowledgeable/real fans.

So, they use a computerized, automatic system that gives immediate information to the ref if the ball has crossed the line or not. What is taking hockey so long? Like it would be a problem to put a small chip in a rubber puck? The puck could even have a gyro so the program could easily calculate if it's in when standing on the edge.

Then they can use the war room in Toronto for checking goals if there was other stuff going on (like goaltender interference, high stick, etc). It's abundantly clear the sport is outpacing the awareness of the refs, they need all the technological help they can get.

I can only agree on the discussion that diving should result in suspensions retroactively. As it should in hockey, even though it's far, far worse in football. It's slowly destroying the integrity of the entire sport.

The goal line tech used at the world cup uses data from high speed cameras placed around the stadium to detect if the ball has crossed the line. If you had 10 bodies crowded around the ball as it went into the net, it would be useless.

Hockey is much more difficult, if not impossible to use a similar technology. The obstructions (crowd, boards, glass) are all much closer in hockey. Embedding something in the puck would also be very hard to engineer without changing the flight properties of the puck, since the system would need to know when the puck is on edge or flat, etc. That all changes when and how a puck crosses the line. I know it sounds easy, but as an engineer, it would be extremely difficult to implement something with the level of precision hockey requires.

I went to Stout for the US game. It was packed. Not sure how knowledgeable the fans are.

Still there's also a goal tech available that uses a chip and would work for hockey. FIFA chose GoalRef mostly because it's cheaper. And that's probably why there isn't one in the NHL. Developing one is very expensive, while the potential "customers" are far fewer than for soccer.

Yes, putting a chip in a ball is much easier for soccer, since the ball will completely cross the goal line at the same time no matter how the ball is oriented. That doesn't hold true for a puck. A puck will completely cross the goal line at different times depending on how it's oriented. That's a very difficult task to engineer something to detect that and not change the weight/flight characteristics of the puck.

Ochoa has always been regarded as a very good GK. He should have been at a top European club years ago.
