If he does, I think we're the favorites to sign him, especially if both MSL and Richards remain on the roster.

make the math work....id be shocked if anyone can.

unless you think we're just going to play 3 lines next season??

av has shown he prefers to have 4 solid lines rather than 3 "stacked" lines.

I am trying to understand how all the players in the AHL make more than Cam Talbot. In fact, pretty much everyone seems to make more than he does--by a lot. I know he doesn't play a lot but when he does it's crucial. I find it a bit shocking. Also, Hagelin is woefully underpaid as well.

The majority of guys in the AHL have 2 way deals, and make a lot less in the minors then they would if they are up with the big club. Cam had an AHL salary of 125 grand if he was with Hartford all year.

The deal was good for him to take last year because he got a 1 way contract for the 2nd year of the deal so he was going to make 575 grand either in Hartford or with the Rangers next season.

Staal may need to be moved.

Is McIlrath ready for the call up?

I WANT him to be, but I don't think he is... Besides, in Mac a RHD? If he does come up, optimally I would see this fitting:
- you push Girardi out via trade for additonal forward depth
- 1st Pair = McD-Stralman
- 2nd Pair = Moore-Klein
- 3rd pair = Staal-McIlrath -- They take 3rd pairing minutes until they become solid defensively at which point AV can consider the bottom 4 D pairings in a 2A/2B format...

The only other way is shipping G out, Moving Klein or Stralman to the top pairing, then one of those two to the 2nd pairing, which leaves you with a 3rd pairing of... wait for it...
Moore-McIlrath

ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN... Our D takes a major downturn, not because the 1st pairing becomes weaker -- On the contrary it actually becomes a slightly bit faster, since Girardi is by far the slowest skater of the D corps -- but because the 3rd pairing goes from borderline 2nd pairing to hardly a servicable 3rd pairing... That's a HUGE hit to take, especially in one offseason.

I think Hags took a hometown discount for sure. I recall his contract extension talks only took 2-3 weeks before he was signed, where as Stepan took over 1.5 months...

Not sure about Talbot's contract situation, but I do recall that in the 12-13 season, he was an absolute cluster**** in Hartford. I used to go to many games, 2-4 per month... I would watch him single handedly blow a game in the 3rd period with two softies, and I'm talking mountains worse than a Hank softie.

I really don't see Pouliot taking a huge deal. He wasn't far from losing an NHL job permanently just at the beginning of this season. Now he's somewhere where he has found success and happens to have insane chemistry with his line mates.

Something is probably going to have to give on D as much as I absolutely hate to say it.

Rangers should take a good look at Kadri his offseason. Be a nice replacement for Brad.

hmm.. 23 years old, and already has a 40 point season (AHL) and a 50 point season (NHL) under his belt....

Signed for only 3M... could do a D for F swap... buying out Brad net's 3.6 in cap space... that's not too shabby either for a young centerman.. Not sure what the leafs are looking for this year though.. any idea?

It's already been reported as per SNYRangersblog that there is mutual interest in him signing with the Rangers, probably for a 2-4 year deal...

It's speculated that this deal could be around 1.8M... I CANNOT see him even thinking aobut asking any more than that... that's the highest he was paid, and that was a year ago... I'm confident Glen is offering him 1.6, while he is asking for $1.8,
settling for $1.7M

Please, no. I don't want a 37 year old declining Boyle on our roster.

Unless he's signing for dirt cheap it won't happen. Too little cap room to spend the kind of money on him when we already have a good chunk of cap tied up in the defense.

I'd offer up Staal plus maybe a second for Kadri, amnesty Richards, and use the savings to bring back Stralman. Conor Allen is ready for a spot in all likelihood. Going forward we can also flip Klein if McIlrath proves his readiness.

McIlrath is a right shot--right defenseman. He'll be at least at first a stay at home physical defenseman who will beat the **** out of opponents now and again.

Rangers didn't sign Girardi to a big contract this year to dump him in the off season and then sign Stralman. They very obviously chose to lock him up for a while (rightly or wrongly). They didn't choose to do that with Stralman. Stralman by the way has never ever been a 1st pairing defenseman. Not the first option to face the likes of Crosby, Tavares, Ovechkin etc. and play 25 minutes a night and in a pinch 30.

Right now the D for 2014-15 looks like:

McDonagh--Girardi
Staal--Klein/xxxxxx
Moore--Klein/xxxxxx
Falk?

with Allen, McIlrath and Bodie as potential candidates depending on their play and circumstances. If Stralman does not come back we have one hole to fill--we don't have to revamp our entire D. We just have to fill one hole with a quality right side D. I have no problem with the Rangers re--signing Stralman relative to $ and term. He's a very good player. He's not a guy I would want on our first pair though and neither is Klein.

$53,187,500 committed to 12 players. Bettman was asked about the upper limit before game one. He said no changes from the previous numbers he mentioned which were $69 million to $70 million. The NHL is starting to get all of the financial data from the teams. The Rangers will have many decisions to make In the next three weeks.

Staal should only be let go if we have any way to keep Stralman. The thought of McIlrath replacing him is laughable at this point.

If Girardi is a top pairing defenseman then so is Stralman. If he wasn't capable of doing it, then we would've gotten killed in the Pittsburgh series when Crosby and Malkin played on separate lines.

Girardi's added grittiness and shotblocking skills may make you feel safer with him, but here's the thing: Girardi is a steady hand to have when you get pinned in your own zone for long stretches. Stralman keeps you from getting pinned in for long stretches in the first place.

I'm not saying we should deal Girardi (barring an unexpectedly strong offer), but we absolutely need to make room for Stralman. He is an essential piece of our possession game.

McIlrath and Staal play different positions, so he wouldn't be replacing him.

Maybe Skjei in the future or Moore if he finds another level, or even Allen if he can turn into another Girardi. But not McI. He will always be on the right side.

Assuming Stralman walks...McD, Girardi, Staal, Klein and Moore return....and no one else is signed....then McI and Allen (a lefty who plays both sides) will be in contention with Diaz for the 6th (3rd pair RD) and 7th spots.

How much money and term do the Rangers want to have on defense? McDonagh is in the first year of a six year contract. Six year extension for Girardi. Staal is in line for a long term extension. Unless his play has convinced the masses that the Rangers should not sign him. It changes with every period. One series Staal is the Rangers best defenseman and in the next series the Rangers shouldn't bother signing him. Which is it? Stralman is in line for a really good contract next month. Besides McD, none of them are offensive players. The Rangers trade Staal this summer and who replaces him on left side? John Moore? There are no easy decisions. Stralman will get a great offer on July 1 which the Rangers won't be able to match or will regret matching down the road if Stralman comes back to them to see what they want to do.

Klein is very moveable. Re-sign Stralman and flip Klein. Let Diaz, Allen (he plays both sides, correct?), and McIlrath duke it out for the third pairing.

Also, I don't know that a Staal extension would be wise. What is he going forward? His play fluctuates a lot more than it did when he was an all star. All of our top defense prospects aside from McIlrath are lefties: Skjei, Allen, and Bodie. Allen could be a better option for the third pairing next year than Moore. I'd recommend letting Staal play out next season and then see where things are.
