I have cringed when people mentioned Penner in the past. The guy's effort is inconsistent but he would replace Pouliot's offense and also bring some size. He might not actually be a bad -cheap - option. As for the inconsistency. A lot of people have fallen in love with Pouliot...you know, the guy who scored 2 goals in the 1st (I think) 27 games last season. Another unspectacular UFA who might be usefull could be A. Hall. Does anyone think Jake Dowell have anything left in the tank?

Now that I got that out of the way, I'm sure there's some younger UFA players available that aren't going to be superstars but could round out the bottom 6. Ex-Flyer property Jon Matsumoto was someone I thought about. The following players are probably smaller than we'd want but what about S. Stalberg, C. Rau, B. Hextall, maybe even a Cory Emmerton?

As for wingers, I've always liked D. Bowman. How about Mike Hoeffel who certainly has some size?

I would probably legit take any player in the league over Adam Hall

I still have awful memories of how completley and totally useless he was during his time here.

@maydayhockey

The NY Rangers have signed FA forward Lee Stempniak to a one year deal. @YahooSportsNHL @Sportsnet

Handful of posters on twitter saying Rangers have signed Stempniak.

I'll be THRILLED if true.

What is stempniak good at and how will he benefit us? Never paid attention to him in Calgary and pitt

Ok ok not bad. Let's see what he's got. Also, let's see what the price is.

The Rangers saw plenty of Stempniak back when he was playing college hockey with Huge Specimen. I bet the Rangers kicked themselves for years for allowing Maloney to pick the wrong one of the two.

I'm not dieing to sign him but I thought he looked fine in a limited role with Philly in the playoffs.

Colorado isn't moving ROR since they lost Stastny IMO, and it definitely wouldn't be for BRassard.. It would take D since that's what they lack.

True about their needs. They could move Brassard in another deal then. They're still getting plenty of value.

But don't assume they aren't trading ROR. It's a sticky situation, and they do have Duchene and MacKinnon to center their top 2 lines. Much stranger things have happened. I wouldn't rule it out just yet.

BBKers post From The last thread
I expect 2 more UFA SIGNINGS coming for The NYR - after The smoke has cleared on the RFA front next week. We need more NHL depth but with limited space left we need to go about this in a certain order based on monetary constraints.

Kreider - Step - MSL
Zucc - Brass - Nash
Hags - Lombardi/Miller - UFA #1 (one of Stempniak, Penner, Booth, Winnick, Setoguchi or P Mueller - signed for cheap)
Glass - Moore - UFA #2 (one of Car bomb/Carter signed for under $925 k)

I thereafter (camp or start of season) see a minor trade done to uppgrade The fwd depth
Or a sleuth Sather waiver pickup
Kids like Fast, Lindberg, Hrivik, Kristo and Haggerty will then have to earn a spot on The team
The Bourque brothers, Tarnasky and Mueller also possible injury CALLUP options
Duclair (barring a miracle) goes back to juniors
Would like to see us sign Hayes as well

Pretty good foresight - no ? ;)
We signed Stempniak (waiting for $$$).
We are reportedly in on Hayes (which Brooks Broke after this post)
Now just let us sign The RFAs to reasonable $$$ and one of Carter/Carcillo for cheap
And finally await a minor trade after camp (maybe Morin or MPS)
Nostradamus hath spoken

I came up with this lineup. It's solid... I Really like it. In the event that Miller does not work, you slot Lombardi up and call up Lindberg.

And in this roster we come up with the following:

Boyle > Stralman
Lombardi = Boyle
Miller = Richards @ Even Strength
Boyle = Richards @ Power Play
Stempniak >/= Pouliot
Glass = Dorsett
Kostka > Falk
Mueller = Carcillo (though I'd still like to see Carcillo on this team as the 13th/14th forward)

This a deep team--Moore, Lombardi, Stempniak, Hagelin can all slot into the top 6 at any given point if necessary.... Several other prospects like Miller, Lindberg, and Kristo are most likely 3rd/4th line read y by the middle/end of the year.... that's a lot more depth than everyone imagined, and yet look how CHEAP it is!

The defense looks the same if you ask me... I like this lineup, a lot... If we break it down line by line, it's actually better than last year:

Kreider-Step-MSL = True top line... Step and MSL show some great chemistry. We also saw that Kreider worked VERY well with Zucc, so now all of the sudden, you have a super Zucc on the same line... I can see Kreider's production getting even better than the growth predictions are noting

Nash-Brass-Zucc = Not only does Nash add some defensive awareness and skill to the line, but Nash is a much more superior player to Stempniak, Booth, Winnik, or Pouliot... On top of the fact that Brass and Zucc are pass first players, they should be able to send the puck right to him... Nash being on this line also calls for extra coverage on him, which then allows Zucc and Brass more space to make, create, and convert on plays.

Hagelin-Miller-Stempniak = Stempniak is as good, if not more consistent than Pouliot was. Hagelin is a possession beast, and if Miller can excel at dishing the puck, I think this line will actually produce as good, if not better than Poo-Brass-Zucc did last year.

Glass-Moore-Carcillo/Mueller/Fast = Moore is a VERY capable centerman, and very offensively and defensively aware. Glass serves as the agitator and punisher, which is VERY necessary for this team. One of Carillo/Mueller/Fast are really just used as 4th line plugs, though Fast on this line could effectively create even more possession. The only downside is that Fast is not a finisher from what I have watched, and I'm not expecting Glass to exceed Dorsett's performance last year (4 goals and 11 points)... That leaves Dom Moore as the sole finisher, which is OK, as long as these 4th line guys can actually make space and get the puck to him... which I'm NOT expecting glass to do... The more I think about it, Fast seems the be the best option on that line.

Sign RFAs to reasonable $$$
Then sign Carcillo (at 700 k)
On August 16 sign Hayes for $925 k + bonuses
See then what The cap situation is and eventually make necessary adjustments
Move forward with a very deep team full of youth in The pipeline soon most likely ready to take The Step

Stempniak is a righty shot that can play lw and rw. So I oencil him in on 3rd line rw but can play lw w brass and zuke if needed

Helps the pp too if they choose

Run a 4th line of Fast-Moore-Lombardi.

In theory yes but glass will play. Fast could beat out Lombardi as he could spare still but gonna guess he starts in the ahl. Lindberg and fast still top call ups . Kristo has a shot too

I rather have dethroned in CT anyway. Mueller , bourque , younger bourque
