I would like to see something like this :

Hollenstein-Romy-Brunner
Ambühl-M.Plüss-Niederreiter
Wick-(:eek::eek::eek::eek:i)-Bärtschi
Moser-Trachsler-Walker

Josi-von Gunten
Streit-Sbisa
Diaz-Blindenbacher
Grossmann-Furrer

Hiller
Berra
Stephan

I'm not sure about :eek::eek::eek:i but I don't know who will be better at 3rd C (I don't want Ambühl playing C neither Gardner on the team and I don't think it'll be Richard breakout year with the Lightning so this is why I put :eek::eek::eek:i)

:eek::eek::eek:i's Place could be taken by Bykov at 2014.
I think he would do great with Wick (similar but better than Sprunger) and Bärtschi on the other Wing, just depends if he's healthy then and if they have a good chemistry.

Altough I like your lines I still would bring in Gardner, he gives us an other element to use.

Finally I would give Weber a chance as 7th defenseman

Blum, Grossmann and Furrer are ahead of Helbling and Chiesa. Blum doesn't exactly fit with the other guy, so I don't think he has a chance for Sochi, but the way Grossmann plays now, he will get a look for sure.

Chiesa can't skate, he would get eaten alive at this level.

well maybe, but i hope simpson will still take a look on him

i just hope one big guy will be in the team (chiesa, bezina, helbling). So the other teams will not bully the swiss :sarcasm:. And Bezina did not convince me the last wc

I don't like Bezina either, but neither Helbling nor Chiesa is an upgrade over him.

I wouldn't like to see a player taken just because he's big and tough. Sbisa is pretty physcial, as is Grossmann. Vauclair is not exactly undersized either.

some good looking line-up proposals in here.

I go with the guys who think we need one more big D. And if guys like Kukan or Marti aren't good enough yet, well, then I'd take Bezina once again, even if he will cause a goal-against once in a while, but he adds a lot to the team too (not unlike Ambuhl)...and he is a very good leader like Seger.

On D: I share the concerns about Sbisa. He'd acctually had the hands, shot and passing skills to be a much better puck-mover than he is nowadays, but I guess, after being rushed to the NHL, he (till now) never has found time to properly develop his smarts step by step. I hope he does invest some more time this off-season into decision-making, hand-and passing-drills and less into building up a body (with the according sun tan) for the beaches of california... and its birds;) I can't see him being left off the team though.

for me right now: the Nhl-guys (-Weber) plus Bezina, Vauclair, Grossmann, Furrer/Hirschi

On C: like most here Trachsler, Romy, Plüss. one of :eek::eek::eek:i/Bykov or if they take a big step one of Bertschy (he looked so good in the POs)/Richard/Walser.

On W: Wick's strenght definitely isn't his game intensity, but his puck-protection skills in the O-zone, plus his fine, tricky hands and good playmaking definitely give him a good chance for a spot.

and beside Brunner/Bärtschi and the players of the acctual team I can see Hofmann or Vermin being candidates, when they take the next step. and I hope no Rüthemann anymore. definitely no Martschini yet.

And for the 4th line Scherwey (I wait for the critics:)) or D. Wieser could be alternatives for Bieber... it depends what kind of 4th line they want.

I may be bias but I would love to see Schwerwey on the team. But I seriously doubt it will happen. I Bertschy keeps developing at this rate he may be a serious candidate.

What about players like Lemm, Deruns, Domenichelli, Jeannin, Paterlini, Sannitz, Sprunger and Arx brothers? Lemm was very good last Olympic.

Out of the players you name, Lemm may have an outside chance, and Sprunger could too, although his skillset doesn't translate well to the international game and other players are simply better suited.

Domenichelli is now 37 and too slow to play at this level. Paterlini is 41 and just retired, Sannitz has been struggling for a few seasons now, and Déruns fell from the face of earth when he left Geneva and is not good enough anymore. The Von Arx brothers have refused to play for the national team for 10 years now.

Lemm had a brain tumor in october 2011, he gave his comeback this season but is not there were he once was.

Déruns never found his game after his change to the SC Bern. He now plays for Lausanne, we'll see how he plays in the NLA next season. I still have some hope that he might come back.

Domenichelli is not getting any younger and I think we have better options right now.

Same with Jeannin.

Paterlini played two years in the NLB and retired now (he's 38).

Sannitz is far away from the level he once had, was loaned out from Lugano to Kloten but could not help them

Sprunger may be a possibility, if he stays healthy, but with Bärtschi, Nino, Wick, Hollenstein, Brunner, etc. there are better players for his role.

Reto Von Arx retired from National team after the olympic games 2002. And his brother never really had the level for international play.

RvA was kicked out of the Salt Lake City Olympics, not from the national team, along with Jenni. Both were given a chance to return to the team, Jenni accepted but Von Arx declined, so it is correct to say that not playing for Switzerland was his own choice.

Jan Von Arx was certainly good enough at some point, he even played in a World Championship, but he stood by his brother after the Salt Lake City incident.

Well, I suggested Scherwey for the 4th line before Simpson's nomination of the Scb-Players... and people in here didn't agree at all...

He definitely takes to many unneccessary penaltys (as does Stancescu and to a certain amount D.Wieser)...that could be a reason why Simpson hadn't had him in the extended rosteer but I stay with my call, he got the speed, the powerskating, the physical play and the determination for the 4th line... and IMO he could play a "pest" role in the NHL.

Bertschy looked like a veteran on the C-position in the POs, so many smart plays, and he's pretty bulky.... he got everything to pan out as a offensive two-way player ala M.Plüss with even a bit more skills.

Why, what happened ?

He decided to have fun with Marcel Jenni and they want out in a bar without authorization and came back drunk before the game against Belarus.
Some years later Krueger asked them to come back in NT, Jenni accepted and RvA refused several times (under Krueger and Simpson)

What kind of players are Suri,:eek::eek::eek:i and Hollenstein? Lights up the WC but will they make the olympic team?

all of them have the chance to

i would take suri and hollenstein
:eek::eek::eek:i is a great player too, but no lock. they all need to have a good season in the nla.

Could you describe them as players?

ooh, this is discussable. There will be guys with different opinions.

for me:
hollenstein is a poor man version of brunner right now. Great offensive talent, good passing/shoot
:eek::eek::eek:i is a "good-weather-player". Good game, but not a hard worker. Plays a great wc so far with his line
suri is for me the best 2-way player of this three. He is a leader and plays hard / use his body. I see a great future for him

Pretty nice to have such a good discussion 9 months out! From my perspective, Switzerland has less locks and more options to make their Olympic team than any time in the past. At every position there are players up for discussion. Can only be a good thing!

I'd say the locks at this point, assuming no injuries, would be
G - Jonas Hiller
D - Mark Streit
D - Rafael Diaz (hopefully no hospital passes from him!)
D - Roman Josi
D - Luca Sbisa
F - Damien Brunner
F - Sven Baertschi
F - Nino Niederreiter

After this group the discussion widens dramatically.

Random question in the wrong thread, but why Rüthemann isn't on the roster? Shame that he isn't in Sweden, he definitely would deserve a medal for his efforts in past. :(

He was the last cut, coach said he just didn't know where to put him. But yeah, he'd deserve a medal for all he has done for the Swiss icehockey, Seger, Vauclair and Plüss will get one, Rüthemann not.

That's true, he was a national team warrior for many years. Unforgotten for me is his goal against Canada in Vancouver 2010.

But he wasn't in a good form in the playoffs and in the weeks before the WC, so Simpson decided to leave him at home. If he plays a good season next year he will probably be a part of the team in Sochi due to his experience.
