2013 Prospect Camp

So the way this organisation is runned is only if the "team" has something to gain, they'll organised some type of event? And what point were you trying to make exactly outside of "there's only 200 people that will attend on a week day"?

Fans in Montreal can attend every practice/scrimmage of the prospect camp and people actually do show up. I just don't see what the downfall would be for the Devils to do what everyone else is doing... for the fans.

If you can clarify your point, it would be greatly appreciated.

There is no 'downfall' but any potential gains are negligible compared to what they would spend/give up to make this happen. It's not some great boon to get more fans or anything. There's no reason for the Devils to care to open it to the public, they won't gain a damn thing.

i agree. there is a large investment for no return.

when 100 people show up throughout the week, it just isn't worth it. I'd wager like 5 people here would go max anyway. Write a letter if you're upset about it. Maybe they'll read the 2 letters they get.

Your argument is compelling - but to say there is nothing to gain is to negate the impact you may have on 200 kids that will be able to say 'I remember seeing Jon Merrill when he attended his first prospect camp... Reid Boucher stood out because of his shot... I got to hi-five Scott Stevens when he went down the tunnel...' etc.etc.

... and all of the people who get to HEAR about it.

I don't know about you, but my parents always came back from the 'Dinner with the Devils' fan club meetings in the 80s with tales that made me much the die hard that I am today.

I think this club could go a long way in its 'good will towards fans' department and this would help.

Edit: Heck, I just realized as I was typing this that a rookie Craig Billington sat at their table one year... and here I am posting with the moniker.

Will there be a scrimmage?

Almost always is. Last year they put in on their website in it's entirety IIRC.

Would it be better if I said there was nothing tangible to gain?

Among the notable players missing from the development camp roster are defenseman Alex Urbom and goaltenders Keith Kinkaid and Maxime Clermont. Urbom and Clermont are under contract. Kinkaid is an unsigned restricted free agent. Under the collective bargaining agreement, players are not required to participate in more than three development camps. Urbom has already attended at least three development camps. Clermont has attended exactly three.

The minimum pieces of flair is 15.

I remember the big knock against Urbom is that some people think he doesn't take his job seriously. I know he's notorious for partying and I've heard before that he has a questionable work ethic, especially with off-ice training.

I've heard about that too. I would honestly like to see him traded if he has any value (doubtful).

What do they have to "spend" exactly, outside of a salary to some security guard holding a flash light and a whistle?

The reason they should care is because certain fans do care. Even if there's 7 people that show up in the entire week, is the salary of that lonely security guard will cause our finances to head south?

To bring another point to the table... 90% of the kids aren't at school for the summer so I'm certain it would be a real treat for those kids to watch pro players run their drills and take part in scrimmages, free of charge, when certain families can't afford to bring their kids at the Rock for whatever reasons (financial situation, games are played too late on school days, etc, etc, etc)

Just saying.

All the return you mention are not tangible.

The cost also involves some things I don't know about, because it becomes the Devils hosting an event at the Prudential Center. That involves different tax deals with the City/State, AEG/LiveNation/TicketMaster, etc. Even if the tickets themselves are free. They have contractual obligations in place. They'll need police presence outside, parking stuff to deal with, several security guards actually. And it's through a contracting company, so they have minimums, etc.

Then, what if they don't give STH preferred entrance? You get your actual money-spending, core fanbase upset. So, you give them tickets, which get sold on eBay or Craigslist illegally and then MORE people complain. It's just NOT worth it for no tangible return.

I'm done with this. It's not worth it to open it. Period.

Look we are just throwing out reasons as to why 29 out of 30 teams are "ok" with this and not us. No need to get on your high horses or anything, it's just a friendly conversation between a couple of posters, that's all.

I went to the Habs prospect camp a couple of years ago and there's not one cop in site, the security is almost non existent and there's not one season ticket holder who's complaning about not getting a "invite" before anyone else since it's opened to the public, meaning anyone and everyone has a right to attend since it's free.

Anyways, like you said... there's all kinds of stuff that you and I don't know but it's kind of weird that out of 30 teams, we're the only team that would get no tangible return out of such a thing. If the other 29 teams are burning money hosting such a event, one would think that the number of teams would go down from year to year but apparently, that doesn't look to be the case.

"Status quo" for everything is the slogan we'll live and die with I guess.

Great post ... saying there is no benefit is short-term thinking ... building the Brand while creating long-term loyalties amongst a fan base only makes sense and shows you are never just sitting on your laurels ... doing anything towards cultivating future "die-hards" only makes good business sense.

I had a great time at the prospect camp they opened up in 2009 and was excited to see guys like Pelley, Palmieri, Josefson, and especially Tedenby, some of which were among our nicer prospects or personal favorites at the time, got to spend some time talking to Johnny Mac outside the locker rooms during one of the intermissions, a fight broke out between 2 prospects at the cam, and a half hour before doors opened when I got there, there were at least 100 people in line already - there are plenty of hockey fans throughout the summer who have the itch for some "Devils" hockey and would absolutely go

The one in 2009 was no frills, 9 or 10am on a Saturday, handful of security guards, no police presence and a concession stand.....all very simply done, I understand there are always security things to be concerned with, but I'm confused as to why it would be an issue again one time during the prospect camp week since there didn't seem to be any issues during the one I'm talking about

They don't have to open it up for the entire week - either open it up for one practice or open it up for one of the scrimmages and call it a day

Holy **** I know Kyle Gibbons. Good at hockey, but a monster d-bag.
