Usually, Ovechkin's idea of good defence is trying to hit the puck carrier without regard to positioning. In that play, he didn't even bother doing that.

Only so many of the 'surprise' teams (Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Isles) would have faded out of it in an 82-game season though. There just weren't enough teams in the East capable of making the jump up.
