Hypothetical. Not saying he is. Hockey players/ Agents are not against asking for more than they are worth. The question is would you keep him for that much or let him sit.
If he's worth say 2.75 for 2... and you could lock him up for 5 for 3.25 - 3.5 would you?
This is crazier than the Alfie thing. They let parise and clarkson go because they were cap****ed. Now they lose Ilya one week after ufas are gone. And they don't have their first so they can't tank

Kovalchuk really ****ed them over. I fully endorse BM's 'stay away from Russians' strategy. I guess he wants to play in the KHL and gear up for the Olympics? It's funny how these foreign players seem to care more about the Olympics than the Cup. Just a difference in culture I guess.
They lost it for cap circumvention for signing kovy. It's just removed from the draft

kovy was one of my favourite players. 
loved that speed, size, shot combo. he became very good defensively. he could do it all. quite the franchise player new jersey (and the league) just lost
